If the cost of food keeps rising we will all be eating insects. Well it wouldn’t hurt us. Insects are 50% protein v about 30% for lean beef, although I’ve just had a nice steak , and wouldn’t have taken kindly to having a grasshopper stir fry instead. It’s just what we’re conditioned to eat. Look at a prawn . It doesn’t look that different from a locust, but one most people would eat readily and refuse the other ( me included). OM646
First FTP of my motoring career. Basically, out of nowhere, the Mercedes started running rough, letting out lots of white smoke and smell of unburned diesel. Lost almost all of its power. Oil, coolant level were just like before, the car didn't overheat and gave me no lights on the dash. Left it alone for like 3 minutes and when restarting, it ran just fine. But I couldn't risk it happening again so I drove it to the shop. And of course, insurance gave me 48h of rental car, meaning I can only have it on Monday. No car for the weekend since the Audi is decommissioned. Great AnnoyingPentium and Popsicle

This is why my cars are always left in gear! That and having spent a bunch of time in Saabs. I had my moment back in ~2004 when I came back from college to where I caught the bus to find my car having snapped the handbrake cable and having travelled the full width of a not small public car park unattended. It wound up perfectly parked - just on the completely opposite side of the car park to where I left it. Given how busy it usually was there it's a miracle that it didn't hit anything! Never trusted a handbrake after that.

dozeydustman
Spent today with @Stankyof this parish to replace the rotten brake line on the Mini. Having a proper car lift really helped Metal pipe was a bit of a pig but all unions on the brake lines were thankfully not seized up and everything cane apart nicely. Both rear flexis were replaced and the calliper sliders for O/R also swapped for new, as one had got rather attached to the position in which it had chosen as comfy. Stanky’s tilting car lift made things so much easier, as did a dry area and electricity being on tap. Bleeding the system out was a bit of a pain. Stanky started with the Eezibleed but it didn’t have enough oomph to start with, so a bit of old fashioned pedal down-up soon got things flowing. I need to re-secure the exhaust heat shield as the mounting points are in poor condition, I’m hoping some repair washers or some pieces of thin steel with a hole drilled in will suffice. I will order a new one before next test. Stanky you are top shiter, can’t thank you enough for the help and facilities today. I’ll pop a couple a bottles of home brew round when I’ve racked them from the demijohns! Brake calipers and flexis are something I've done before but running new brake lines - especially having to put your own bends into the hardlines is a new one for me. Adds to the CV skills though so all positive stuff! Was good to see you and glad the car left in a better condition that it arrived - from my fleet thats not always the case. GMcD
I'm not a two bucket wrong un' but I couldn't resit seeing if I could get a shine out the Cavalier. The paint is very swirly and chipped. Right hand side is a quick pass with the polisher. Still swirly and chipped but much better. Dark and raining so I couldn't get any decent pics but it's a noticable improvement. Fixed the rear wiper too. The motor was knackered so it was a simple swap with a second hand replacement to fix. Cars like this are so rewarding to polish - the worse it starts the better. Diminishing returns once you’ve got it remotely shiny, I don’t know how the detailing lads find the motivation to keep trying to improve a near perfect car. dozeydustman
Final 2 jobs on the Mini done this morning. First I ballparked the OS headlamp aim to roughly level with the NS. Hopefully it just needs a tweak at the test tomorrow. Exhaust heat shield has been reattached but sadly on one side only. Spent longer this morning trying to find penny washers larger than 1” than actually fitting it. The other side is loose but not slopping around like a turd in a pisspot and no longer vibrating on the exhaust. The other bolt was fond of its slumber and it’s absolutely heaving down outside I didn’t fancy rolling around in a puddle any more. When money and time permits I may as well just get a new one. The main battery cables run behind it because on diesel R50s the battery is in the boot. Just like a real mini. dozeydustman
I also want to find out if this Mini has self-levelling headlamps, as with standard H7s the lights are a bit crap. If they are I might consider an LED upgrade. There’s certainly no beam adjustment in the cabin.
AnnoyingPentium
Went a rumble round some of the scrapyards/breakers in Ayrshire today. Shewalton in Irvine has fuck all, Kilmarnock was just fun to explore, and the one in Ayr near Howdens was creepy as fuck with the lad following me about like a shadow to make sure I didn't pinch anything. Has a lot of interesting shite though. These photos are from the Kilmarnock bit. And half a Puma... I like to keep my cars clean but that's normally just wash/wax and a lick of tyre/bumper gel, but then I stop. Most times I just don't think it's worth the time or effort to get the polish out.
