I was off yesterday but when I got to the same spot today I found this.

I had no idea there was a car underneath it at the time. Shame as its quite unusual if not particularly interesting.

I once had to take a detour as a horse had jumped over the front of a car.  Poor horse was put down.  Ambulance was taking the driver away. 

Car looked like a write off.

If you actually argue the toss with the retentions folk they drop your quote quite a bit... my mum does this every year and Relay is about £170.

If they can do it profitably for £170 then charging an old man £422 puts them in the same category as the overcharging scam artists who rip off old people for repairs they have done.

Audi has been delivered and will have the little things needed to pass the inspection fixed today. Then the excitement was what kind of car I got to borrow today, it became the workshop manager / owner's own Toyota Land Cruiser complete with his belongings and child seats.

Especially when they know that he probably does 12 miles a week, and hasn't broken down since 1978, which is why he joined in the first place.

How can swapping a radiator be so difficult?

Capri:

Unscrew bottom coolant hose, drain coolant. Unbolt fan shroud. Unscrew top coolant hose. Unbolt 4 fixing bolts, pull radiator up.

 

Mondeo:

Spend ages fighting with bloody awful spring clips, eventually drain antifreeze onto hair/clothes, unscrew mounts for electric fan, unclip a load of related and unrelated wiring, try to remove, absolutely won't move, try to move bauden cable under the bonnet which gives a reassuring >SNAP< - oh feck - give up - come home and re-read the Haynes... bloody hell you have to dismantle half the bloody cooling system to even get the electric fan out! Give up and sit in the warm/dry.

After wheel nearly falling off Mondeo there was one wheel nut missing and the rest merely loose.

I ordered a new nut, duly went to re-fit it and...

No threaded bar. It it possible it has sheared off along with the nut and that the two of them have gone for a romantic picnic together in the grass verge?

Put the Cavalier away for the winter. Everyone knows these like to rot, except this one so I'd like to keep it that way.

I took the opportunity to picture the 2 auld dears of the fleet together as I was shuffling the cars about.

Unfortunately I still can't get the Cavaliers thermostat pipes completely watertight. It's better than it was but the moisture ends up on the subframe which I do not want.

The big pipe at the top is a new piece with new clips.  I think that's still leaking a bit. It's possibly not seated properly as it was very stiff and didn't really bend all that well.

The smaller pipe to the left of the the sender for the gauge is also dripping just a touch. I think this pipe is just old, I have a new more robust pipe left over from the Corsa engine change a few years ago.

The dark stuff on the block bottom left is Permatex,  it works very well indeed. It's backing up my home made gasket for the housing to block face.

Plenty of time to sort it over the winter.

There is also water getting into the boot which I think is from the aerial grommet. The aerial itself is electric but is almost completely seized but I have a complete replacement which I'll fit over the winter too.

Not much else needed really!

Clutch, clutch and clutch.

They were quite fragile on the earlier cars and several that I've driven (including mine) weren't adjusted right which in my case wrecked the release bearing.

Changing the radiator requires dropping the front crossmember which is bolted on with bolts made of cheese, so it's a question of how many you snap rather than if you snap any.

They're generally pretty hardy little cars though, so there aren't any other major pitfalls I'm aware of. 

By this age rust is obviously something you need to keep an eye out for as the factory protection wasn't great, but that's true of any car that's 15 years old really.

it would be interesting to know what an MGB in such condition would fetch this day and age like that if there are any left? (I know a few where put away at the end of production as investments but then eventually registered because that idea was foiled by the fact they made so many of them, but then again they made a load of 2CV's as well!)

also "real time machine" that would be very useful/handy might struggle to hit 88Mph however I think! although saying that I know @dollywobbler got 80 something out of Elly on the Autobahn!

(I wonder what the fastest someones got a 2CV with its Flat twin engine...)

I had 80 on the GPs with the standard 602 cc engine. As the saying goes, nothing left on the clock but the maker’s name.

It doesn’t smell in the car and it passed it’s MOT a week ago so I hope not! Happened tonight even after a 5 minute drive to McDonald’s. Feels like motion dizziness.

 

I remember feeling like it once years ago when I’d first driven an automatic.. my current car is auto but I’ve obviously driven that thousands of miles without feeling like it!

 

it’s also a diesel so AFAIK very slim chance from one of those?

I should be collecting a winter hack tomorrow and will have to drive an hour and a half home so will soon find out (it’s a manual too)

I also haven’t driven in the dark for bloody ages and it’s been dark both times so I wonder if it could even be something as simple as that.
