I think by now all Disco 1 & 2's look fairly similar under the back end. I'm guessing I'm about two years older than you and I have a vague recollection that the idea was to prevent little scrotes pulling up your aerial and snapping the bugger off. In reality, I'd imagine around 0.00001% of the population bothered locking their aerials and everyone else left it to fate.
