56 miles achieved today  from 24 kwh, with 16 miles left in the tank.  Not hanging about either.  That's with the 'ghastly inefficient' heating and A/C on, no heated rear window though because the car got up to temperature and demisted using the mains on the timer whilst I enjoyed a bath.

250 miles planned tomorrow, might take a coat.

To be fair, if you're in a LEAF of decent spec, it'll have the heat pump heater, which is meant to be a fair bit more efficient. I am missing the heated steering wheel...

And some spare electricity in a can.

I do like the have a conversation with the people that ring from random call centres.

Just had another one. Decided on the very fast generic Irish accent this time.

Bloke was selling life insurance. Let him say his bit then asked him did he have any life insurance himself.

"yes I do"

"is it with your company?" I ask

"no it's not"

"then your company must be pretty shit, thanks for calling bye!"

Sad I know but really, if you're selling something always remember the golden rule and lie like a bastard to get rid of the thing :-)

And you'd have had another 5 or 10 miles even when it told you nothing was left. I reckon 70 miles + reserve on a flipping cold day, driven briskly, is bloody good going for an older gen Leaf bought for a fraction of its new price.

So let's assume for the moment that I have more money than sense (I have, even though I have no money at all, lol) and decided to replace the Blob with a Leaf.  The Blob does most of our long-distance work, like going to Inverness to see the grandsons.  350 miles each way, which we consider a full driving-day in each direction.  How long would the journey take in the Leaf if we have to stop and recharge (assuming that's even possible along the interminable A9) every 70-ish miles???????

Pretty-much what I was thinking!  So I don't see myself adopting elastic-trickery in my cars just yet....

Nor me. 85 miles is time to fill up, not ready to leave. Christ I wouldn't buy a bike as a toy with such a tiny range.

Probably very true. However I know plenty of people who've changed cars as they got bored with filling the tank more than once a week, so who wants to park up halfway home every other day for a fast charge?

Is that how people manage their smartphones? No, they stick them on charge every evening or, if v heavily used, whenever put down for any length of time. In general, you don't wait for the battery to get into the red zone before recharging.

I adore good infernal combustion engines, but do see how the electric motor is on the verge of taking over and am excited by this - car engineering has gone nowhere in the last quarter century.

Just as steam gave way to the ICE, so we're on the cusp of a revolution. It's a shame the hydraulic motor doesn't figure, it's 5 or 6 times lighter than an EM and very nearly as efficient. Bosch trialled it in trucks, but it looks like the variety of supply and cheapness of the EM will conquer all.

It all kicked off at work in our depot the other day. Some total twunt had parked a Sprinter across the electric car charge points (car park is too small by far to be fair and vans should be the priority for parking really but still). Some of the managers have EV's and PHEV's so we're mightily pissed off they couldn't charge up. Worse, nobody could find who the van driver was or where he was so it couldn't be moved.

Stupid really but there you go.

Charging an E car when you cannot 100% grantee parking outside your own house WILL be interesting at times, you arrive home with 10miles left on the clock, to find some SUV dumped in your parking spot, come morning you have a 80mile trip to make...not everyone has a driveway/garage.

Hybrid is the way to go IMHO, EV cars will have their day though.

I agree, initially cars with an electric back axle which boosts acceleration, stores braking energy in the smallish battery pack and reduces emissions will be able to cover 20-35 miles on battery power. I think GKN and others already have these available with only a small mass penalty, as economies of scale grow the ICE will shrink to something very small even for long range vehicles.

The mighty sapphire saves the day, we've had a flurry of snow chaos, after digging the other staffs cars off the carpark I followed one of the women who live a few miles away from me home, about 5 miles away from home the roads were sheet ice and compacted slush no one was moving, she jumped in my car and we sailed past everything and delivered her at home the car got lots of compliments, I am stupidly still on summer tyres to top it off,

all hail the sapphire

On an unrelated note I forgot to mention on here when I started the job there I found out that her ex partner was a previous owner of mrs fps escort rs turbo, she says she can't get away from the bloody thing

Just come across this clip of Saeed Al-Hajri and Steve Bond's Audi Quattro A2 in the 1988 Rothmans Rally Jordan.

The car’s gearbox needed to come out, and come out it did, on the side of the road, with no power tools, in not more than 15 minutes.

Plenty of background chod for spottage

All my Christmas shopping is done and wrapped. Not bad considering I have 3 kids and my partner has 1. I can now sit back and relax. Christmas is probably my favourite time of the year. On another note, social services has now given me full custody of my daughter (5). my ex can only have supervised visits and no overnight stays. She's a registered alcoholic and on a massive downward spiral since I left. Lost the house, her job of 15 years with the nhs, her car and now her license. It's going to be the best Christmas ever.

I have no feeling of guilt or sorry for her. She has put me and the kids through total hell these last three years. I now have a new partner of 2.5 years who has a really good job and for the 1st time in my life I don't have to pay for every fucking thing. Her dad is loaded and bought us a lovely  4 bedroom, 3 storey house next to a pub. We do have to pay the interest on the money he shelled out but it's only £300 a month (till he dies). He's in his early 70's and smokes and drinks heavily. Lovely bloke though.

The only downside is my kids go to school 15 miles away and it's a pita having to do the school run twice a day. What happens when they move out of the catchment area?
