That’s the ex Rob-T one isn’t it? Still looking fine!

This one has apparently been garaged its whole life which has preserved it quite well. Not a trace of lacquer peel anywhere.

It is a bit more battered these days but still does us proud! We'll be keeping it for as long as possible

Great buys, you can barely buy 1 car for a grand these days, yet alone 2!

The Laguna is a great car, wish I'd kept mine, 2.0 RN, only had 54k, sold it couple of yrs ago because it was too nice! It went to live in Northern Ireland

Definitely the comfiest car I've owned.

I remember the posh man who would announce 'watch out! Seatbelt not fastened' every time I drove off

A teacher at my primary school had one really early on in the 90s,L or M?

Their lovely, the radio flap is lovely too, I had it in my lag2 and used to pull it down at night, made a bit of a difference!

Loving the Laguna... wish I'd been able to do something with the Mk1 Estate I had a while back.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of poking at bubbles in the underseal and, well... this was one of the better areas. Pretty much the entirety of the rear sills were Bluetooth, with more tinworm extending under the boot.

Ended up going to a breaker's and being parted out. Still feel bad about that one.

Goonas had a terrible reliability rap, back in the day. I think it's what killed them off, survivors are rare.

Not the Phase 1 model. You're probably thinking of the early Phase 2 that (with considerable help from the Megane/Scenic of the same era) almost resulted in Renault going under.

Mebbe. TBH after the 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 25 & 30 cars we had in our family I lost interest in Reggie with the later stuff.

I would suggest an eBay bulk purchase of several  20l drums of the appropriate grade of Mannol would be a wise investment for the Renault: I would change the oil now, again in 250 miles and then as a minimum, double the change interval thereafter until you reach your chosen regular interval (mine tends to be around 7500-8000 miles).

That should gently flush the crud that will have built up in that engine without the need for engine flushes.

Yep. The mk1 was good by all accounts!

I've had 2 mk2's. The 2nd was an early mk2 phase 1 with manual everything and it was wonderful tbh until the clutch went. Nothing (other than general car stuff) went wrong and it felt fairly well built.

The 1st was a ph2 top spec electric everything and stuff broke 😂

The mk3 laguna was supposedly alright too as it was quite alot of Nissan underneath or something. But it was too late then and the model got pulled.

I managed to put key cards from both through the wash too... The buttons stopped working but it still got read in the card slot in the dash 👌

Yeah, I had a 2001 Y plate phase 2 in 2003 absolutely awful, made me vow never to own another Renault, worst ftp the gearbox oil making a bid for freedom down the nearside draftshaft on a trip to France this came to light with my mate driving when he touch the brakes coming into the Dartford crossing barriers and we came in sideways as gearbox oil covered the brake disc and was sprayed all up the side. Still like the look of al 3 phases though..

The Mk3 always looked like the front end was styled by Hoover, like the original Renualt 19!

The plenum drains on this 75 were blocked solid with leaves and muck and there was a lot of trapped water that leaked out once we rodded them out.

Changed the cabin filter. This has been underwater and it was absolutely grim, probably never changed before.

Fortunately, the engine itself was serviced last year and the air filter is like brand new, it had a new diesel filter too.

Flatted and polished the headlights, they came up well.

Numberplates:

I transferred the private plate from the Renault onto a retention certificate (will probably end up roffling it) and the DVLA very quickly put it back on its original X reg. I simply cannot abide the newer post 2001 font number plates on earlier cars so I had to get the older font plates for it. I bought them from fancyplates, they are the pre2001(a) font. Decent quality and price and they were nice and quick too, and came with the fitting kit.

I also got some new plates for the 75 to replace the old ones which were delaminated, especially the rear. I had the script from the dealer who supplied it secondhand in 2005 applied and it came out really well. Also from fancyplates and they do the proper 75 rear plates too which is also very important.

With the 75 up on the ramp, I had a poke at the crusty bit on the back of the drivers side sill. A bit worse than I thought but not too bad. Can’t find any other rot on it. I’m fairly confident it will go through the mot with this sorted out. Just took the rear wheels off and had two new tyres fitted. The fronts are matching Continentals which have plenty of meat and weren’t quite as old as the rears.

The washer pump has come back to life, spurting out a load of filth in the process.

I’ve spent £150 or so on service bits for the Laguna, I’ve got a full cambelt kit with tensioners etc, new aux belt and tensioner, and a new water pump as well as the oil, filters and so on I’ve already fitted, and the new plates.  I’m hoping the private number plate will cover the cost of all the parts once sold,  making this a cheap car, although it’s needing a fair bit of work to get it up to scratch.
The air con has some pressure (surprisingly) so I’ve ordered a can of gas and I’ll see if it will come back to life, you never know.

Well done that man. Would the original owner have been Renault UK by any chance?

First owner was Europcar, according to the old V5. It was registered at their head office in Hitchin. It was sold as a used car when it was a year old through Pocklington’s Renault of Louth (still going I believe) to its only other owner who died earlier this year.

I would assume that Europcar ordered direct from Renault UK.
