Google translate signs this off with "The spiders, the British." and I have no idea what that means.

Loosely, β€˜those crazy Brits.’ Great blog post, too.

Β

Google Translate has missed that for there to be spiders involved, there would have had to have been a capital S. (And they think the Brits are crazy?)

As far a I understand it was always Nissan in Japan and Datsun in Europe until they switched to Nissan. I prefer Nissan Cedric and is what I will be referring to it as. Datsun 2000 is confusing because in the rest of the world that is what the Fairlady roadster was called.

Datsun Cedric, porn star name

Estates are so useful! I just popped down to Sunningdale Classics to buy a bicycle that I had seen in their showroom last night (video report waiting to be uploaded) and was only Β£75, so I purchased the bike and crazily the salesman had the same surname as me Railton which is not exactly common. We had a good natter about classic cars and I got made a cup of tea, he said to come back anytime which I certainly will do.

Spinnen (verb) means to yarn.

What does a Spinne (noun, spider in English) do?

Β

Spinnen (verb) also means being bonkers.

Β

"Die spinnen, die Briten" is a recurring line in the German version of the "Asterix in Britain" comic by Uderzo that made it into common folklore.

It's not a derogatory thing at all. Germans admire the British tendency to be a bit on the eccentric side.

Β

'Them is spiders, them Brits' is an expression that's hitherthus firmly embroidered in my synapses, though.

My actual car in 1971 when virtually brand new :) Jani has kindly written me a brief synopsis of Cedric's history as I was slightly drunk on Finnish beer when he was telling me the first time, it's pretty interesting stuff. I am going to make it my life's work to track down more old photos of Cedric!

Swapped the Cedric for a new Micra ?

Thought not.

"Here for the scrappage scheme, sir?"

Some shiny-suited berk at a Suzuki dealership did try that line on me in 2009 when Mrs DC was briefly interested in p/ex'ing her Yaris for a Swift. We happened to be in my Cortina when we stopped at the local dealership.

My response is probably unrepeatable on a family-friendly forum such as this.

We did not avail of his kind offer.

On a more Datsun-related note, this is one of my favourite Tomica models:

Going by the grille, a slightly later version than yours?

Β

(And I've been loving the thread, btw. Absolutely stunning adventure in the best grand tradition.)

Β Looks to be the next generation, a 230 Cedric. I am not a huge Datsun expert yet though.....

Β

Arguably, it was Goscinny who wrote the text. Here's the original version :

And, yes, this thread is evidence that he was right (in a good way !).

While drifting around Sutton Park the other night I happened across the rangers 110 Defender. They have owned this from new in 1995 and I had a brief chat with one the rangers. I have fond memories as a kid of seeing this thing working all round the park so it's great it's still going strong all these years later. 200 TDI for the tractory win!
