Shite in Miniature II

Colin didn't seem to be on his Diddly-Dee Irish Tat Stall yesterday morning - a woman I didn't recognise was setting up instead.

IMG_20231110_0736252.thumb.jpg.ad6f85cbdef5025bd1927ea2d4700137.jpg

Nothing conspicuously new seemed to have arrived amidst the Mattel stuff.

There were several bigger new arrivals though - a Vanguards Transit Custom, for one:

IMG_20231110_0737052.thumb.jpg.ab08ed7aea10414025f453504d96ff58.jpg

It looks well done, but ooft dat price.

All-blank 1/76 heavy wrecker from Oxford just begging for some Code 3 action:

IMG_20231110_0737212.thumb.jpg.e25b7f570aebedfc9a986b708ceffbcc.jpg

Similarly scaled Maestro now available in black - just visible there at the top of the stack.

IMG_20231110_0737572.thumb.jpg.1e1169ae20146b60ba654fc36874d022.jpg

Greenlight models appear briefly and sporadically on the stall - here we had a Fox-body Mustang in the Black Bandit collection, whatever that denotes:

IMG_20231110_0737312.thumb.jpg.20b7c898d81f558e82448ea5ee4f22ae.jpg

Nice enough rendering, though it's gloss black oversprayed with matt black on the door, so some sort of Black Bandit logo can be seen picked out.

I don't really know why.

Further across, Optimistic Bobby continued in his quest to radically inflate the perceived values of some very ordinary old toys:

IMG_20231110_0733582.thumb.jpg.64b359046002540b1c77c47c43e4027f.jpg

Yeah, still too dear.

IMG_20231110_0734022.thumb.jpg.ab40c304e98a8787d88d829a36fe96c6.jpg

Meanwhile, Alan was only just taking the tarp down from the front of his Emporium, so we were still hours away from a 50p Tray unveiling.

I thought I may as well go and grab a coffee from my usual place, while I pondered my next steps, but of course the Riders Of The Apocalypse, or whatever they style themselves, showed up and proceeded to commandeer every table and chair visible.

IMG_20231110_0739232.thumb.jpg.8592f0b5ee419a70717b4c0f6d9869d6.jpg

Marvellous.

IMG_20231110_0742582.thumb.jpg.dfeee17a06d83eec458d7869580c84bb.jpg

That's ok, I like standing next to the bins.

IMG_20231110_0749062.thumb.jpg.77bd860217670763a5f05cd7d37e8901.jpg

The caramel oat bar was absolutely worth it, though.

Never seen the Majorette panel van with these labels

20231111_173727.jpg

It's a sticker too, not a tampo.  Which might mean even rarer  ££

It was for a German Sewing Machine manufacturer, as old as Singer and still around too

RotaryHookMachined.jpeg https://www.pfaff.com/en-gb/

So that's yet another non-French brand covered by Majorette for their Volkswagen T2 Fourgon.

Had this Dutch Siemens one since I was in short trousers.  It's a shame it's so knocked -about.

It’s a rolling conveyor here at the moment of stuff being stripped, then primed, then hitting the paint booth!

Firstly, the next victims!
Corgi Buick Regal’s. The blue car looks better than it is. One sides been hit hard and pushed inwards, and one door is twisted so won’t close properly.
Kojak’s old whip is in a right mess. So it’ll donate a good door to the blue car then I’ve got something in mind for the remains!

Transit was masked up this morning (which took ages!) as was the Escort van. Then they were hit with their second colour coats.

I know I'm quoting @danthecapriman but anyone else please comment as well.

I have a huge number of projects on the go, some already stripped and some ready to be stripped. The real bottle neck is painting. I usually do it in the shed and despite me putting up plastic sheeting etc so that it looks like a Dexter murder site, everything still gets covered in spray dust. Also I currently put the parts on upturned flower pots and off cuts of wood, which is not ideal.

What do you use for a spray booth?

What do you use to hold the models while they are sprayed?

First a spray booth was mentioned

These are the stands I use.

They do get covered in paint but it doesn’t matter! The little metal spring things hold the body from the inside so you can spray the model from below, above etc and get everything covered without the bottom of the model touching anything. Obviously it rotates too so you don’t have to touch the model to paint the other side!
The set has another turntable with a flat top and some sprung clips so you can hold little parts to paint.

For a spray booth I used to use a big cardboard box which just caught all the excess and dust. It’s far from perfect but caught most of it. At the moment I just put some bits of newspaper and card on the bench and up behind to catch the worst of the overspray.

These are my model stands...

Vanguards Dolomite shown for scale.  They're made of recycled timber, specifically offcuts of redundant pallets.  For a spray booth, I just take my wheelie bin out in the alley and set up far enough away from anyone's gate.

I must admit, that’s one thing about spraying in the shed. Even with the door and windows open it very quickly stinks to high hell in there once you start spraying!

I quite like it!🤣

I've got several of these to hold casting while painting

image.thumb.png.b0970ec67c208fb3059e940da5c3455f.png

As for a spray booth, the great outdoors. I use a hairdryer to warm the casting up first, especially important if the weather's cold or damp but I always do it, also to speed up drying and before each coat. I put a glove on my left hand so I don't end up with painted nails!

Downside is the crocodile clips aren't that strong so don't always get a decent grip on the posts. I do have one of these hemostats too which lock in place - better for moving the casting about while spraying but vulnerable to getting knocked off of wherever they're hung afterwards

image.thumb.png.df8b8db9f49f6cb7c384af2a061c2106.png

I've got an extractor fan rigged up in the outhouse that I was going to connect to a spray booth for times of bad weather but space is at such a premium in there I've never built one

These were all painted with a brush using good old Humbrol Enamel. After year of pissing about with plastic kits when I was  a teenager I kind of learnt how to brush paint without getting brush lines. The Ferraris are all white metal 1/43rd kits. Each one of these took around 20 to 30 hours to build

I have a single bit of wood just like Eddys for spraying. I only spray outside in the garden as spraying in doors is not allowed.

This Aston was done with by spraying with aerosols from a car parts shop. Grey primer, metallic base coat, and the lacquer. The finish was then cut and polished. You can see remnants of polish in the shut lines. This is a resin cast 1/43rd kit by Provence Moulage.

It’s handy to have some bits of wire and metal rod around too. Sometimes hanging them up and spraying them is easier.
This is just a length of old metal rod with a hook bent on each end to hang stuff. On the Escort van the rod wouldn’t fit through where I needed it to so a bit of old locking wire did the job. The wire also came in handy to push the headlights out on the Corgi Buick.

IMG_2855.thumb.jpeg.0718b7269025d8179f689cf34a6d9a6a.jpeg

Here’s the Buick after a wash off. Primer time next. There’s some nice detail on this too that’s hidden under thick factory paint. Even the cast ‘Regal’ script on the rear wings is legible without paint.

What do you use to fill the roof without it falling out?

Depends. Small holes or marks normal car body filler works fine. If the hole is bigger (like the coin slot in the Spot-On Commer van roof) I use some of the chemical metal putty. The type where you rip a chunk off the stick and mix it together between your fingers then I just put a strip of masking tape over the hole(s) from the outside and push the filler putty into the hole from inside. You still need to sand it after it’s set but the tape usually stops too much going through and minimises the amount of sanding you need to do.
Obviously you need to be careful of the glazing! In the Buick when I do it I can’t leave too much of the filler on the inside of the roof either because it’ll push the glazing out of position!

This is after the Chemical metal has set and the masking tape removed. After wet sanding it back neither van needed any more filler, and both are invisible now the paint & primer are on.

John Frankenheimer Model Car Collection Day 3 Auction on Nov 19, 2023 by LOS ANGELES ESTATE AUCTION in CA (liveauctioneers.com)

After looking at the on-line catalogues, that has got to be one of the laziest auctioneers I have ever seen. And as for the estimates all being $100-$300, they'll be lucky to get bids on some of those at all. Also note there is no mention, or pictures, of any boxes for the models. Which means a lot of those kit built resin and white metal models will be at the mercy of the packers and shippers.

Thanks for posting but I will not be bidding.

PS, If you want a real laugh checkout some of day 3's offering.

Vintage Model Car 1:43 Brown Talbot Van 1927 Matchbox Yesteryear Auction (liveauctioneers.com)

Quote

The whole collection was appraised at $250,000 (£203,300), according to Zack Oganesyan, consignment director at Los Angeles Estate Auction.

My appraisal for the whole collection would be a fifth of what they have appraised the collection at, and that would be with a good wind behind it.

The Northern lights happened last night, localized entirely in my bedroom. I'd just finished my steamed hams (that looked grilled to me) for tea.

So I got a moody shot of the Moggy.

That's it! Back in the garage the back bumper has fallen off again.

More pics to follow as the colour is more blue IRL. I also need to make some number plates.

To try to wrap up Friday, then...

Suitably caffeinated and caramelled, I wandered back over to the main Tat Stall.

The Frankly Skint were now out on display, at a fairly alluring price.

IMG_20231110_0800592.thumb.jpg.40ab32245fdaa975a3b14a219591447d.jpg

But still, no thanks.

I'd overlooked what I believe is some sort of Evel Knievel Skycycle type toy, made by Kenner.

IMG_20231110_0740042.thumb.jpg.56283ad6fe5806de7c9ef7074417d166.jpg

Not my bag, so much.

But what was more my bag was the remains of the several boxes of old tat, now combined into one box of old tat.

IMG_20231110_0801342.thumb.jpg.441c0af24e18e6f186389f5fa5ca959e.jpg

I mean, we've seen this stuff before - but there's still items coming to my notice.

IMG_20231110_0812082.thumb.jpg.df927d9f2e5dafb72498e2c22345e238.jpg

The Timpo Toys tractor unit, for example. Hadn't clocked this until now.

IMG_20231110_0812112.thumb.jpg.5dfcfc8b6c04c0a452ed0760e2557862.jpg

The casting's not in great shape, it's true.

IMG_20231110_0806072.thumb.jpg.6f3ec83c753df812ee3a6d448c0c0f32.jpg

And one of the front axle mountings is long gone.

IMG_20231110_0806352.thumb.jpg.f238ea08919dd8c1354a2d2036f92866.jpg

I'd presumed this accompanied the Timpo trailer I'd clocked in the box just the other week, but in trying to put it together I'm no longer sure it does.

IMG_20231110_0806172.thumb.jpg.425ad1bd72b473240f4b4ce99d6215a3.jpg

The trailer doesn't sit flat on the fifth wheel, instead catching on a ledge behind the cab, and the trailer body's too close to the tractor unit's rear wheels to allow it to turn.

IMG_20231110_0812142.thumb.jpg.a194c03d41b2918f20724d19c7f00bb7.jpg

Still some alright items left, and he seems to be open to lowering his prices, since the ones in decent condition are mostly gone now.

IMG_20231110_0812282.thumb.jpg.adf6a98f9058dfb426839dfb86834290.jpg

Plenty of Commers left, in variable states of completeness.

IMG_20231110_0814422.thumb.jpg.eeb1eb89da7ffbd3d62008877d315953.jpg

Jaguar was a little rough and naturally missing the windscreen, but I hadn't noticed just what a nice casting this is until now.

IMG_20231110_0817402.thumb.jpg.49a8fc27a83debc4f653be35b4a91e7f.jpg

Scarabo still knocking about.

Dinky tankers, too.

I've done you lot a favour and scoured the entire 3 days of sales, to find the best picks:

US director in owning East Yorkshire based small run promotional MOY shocker:

I'd say 25% of the lots are Models of Yesteryear! About 70% are racing Porsche, Ferrari and Jaguar, with a smattering of Rolls Royces. Here's a highlight of the rest:

Looking at the subjects and makers, I'm guessing this was a collection amassed entirely in the 1980's, though I'll need@MiniMinorMk3 to adjudicate this statement.

The highest bid I saw was $13 - bizarrely, on a Models of Yesteryear!

I've got to admit there's a slight inkling to own a Model T Ford, advertising a Hull-based cardboard manufacturer and previously owned by a Hollywood director, and have it shipped to New Zealand. But I think I'll get over it...

So this Corgi #470 Jeep FC150 was procured from the main Tat Stall.

IMG_20231111_0027362.thumb.jpg.19102b66472aff1620e3696ce0404e43.jpg

It's been well played-with, but seemingly not abused.

IMG_20231111_0027442.thumb.jpg.9aefb191e7aed15a52078d48c526197b.jpg

Towbar and original chunky tyres are still in place, and glazing is lightly scuffed but uncracked.

IMG_20231111_0027562.thumb.jpg.5ee8ee818a7a34d7a5e3bf8d7ef5b840.jpg

To be honest, I never really thought much about these before, and actually kinda disliked them, but the @Jon cherry-picker example (now on its way across the oceans, or one of them anyway) and the recent Hot Wheels Q-case find has kinda forced a reappraisal.

IMG_20231111_0028072.thumb.jpg.accd95f417165538899fd1b44e0858a5.jpg

I'm not yet sure if this tan example with interior was a standalone release, or part of a gift set - like the Land Rover, this was a versatile casting for Corgi and it cropped up with all manner of accessories and appendages over the years. I understand the original #470 release from 1958 was blue and, like the rest from that era, lacked any interior moulding.

This one's growing on me, a lot - so it's a keeper, for now.

And - I finally buckled.

IMG_20231111_0028172.thumb.jpg.022303af0756b566295a08a76fe8fa92.jpg

Yes, the 'folk art' sawn-off Dinky Mini van came home with me.

Having missed out on 'The Gay Devil' a few weeks back (no tittering at the back - that was genuinely a heartfelt piece of pre-adolescent creativity), I didn't want to leave this one to be bashed to bits in the tat box.

IMG_20231111_0028222.thumb.jpg.7f8d7c735df35b7f266b094f33b29d5f.jpg

Even if I suspect this has been slung together by a fully-fledged, if perhaps somewhat disturbed, adult.

IMG_20231111_0028342.thumb.jpg.250f68757ab81eb8c2ba4777e34baf96.jpg

It's the glue.

IMG_20231111_0028402.thumb.jpg.9428a74a51e53abde7b9ba14c3488f9e.jpg

Glue everywhere.

IMG_20231111_0028472.thumb.jpg.addef119605cd49ee942b2fbe15e734f.jpg

And the weird bits of lettering.

And the diamante earrings standing in for spotlights.

If anyone truly wants this, £1 takes it.

That was all there was from Market Blokey's stall - but the charity stall did prove worth a guddle.

IMG_20231111_0029012.thumb.jpg.d0c45655df4fbf98bdcf0ff998e1c28b.jpg

This late-issue Police Patrol wearing Paris-Dakar Rally stickers isn't super-rare, but equally isn't all that common.

IMG_20231111_0029062.thumb.jpg.6c716c3fc9b09182d984c0c52ce044b0.jpg

Some wear to the beige paintwork, but the axles are relatively unshonky and the light still rotates in its customarily unimpressive manner, so... available for 50p, if anyone fancies it?

Next up, not normally my style...

IMG_20231111_0029142.thumb.jpg.7086f3fce9ab135497dc1e3d4698a4fb.jpg

But since I picked up the 'Ramone's Body Art Shop' playset a few months back, from the Disney Pixar 'Cars' franchise, it seems only sensible to populate it a bit with the titular proprietor.

IMG_20231111_0029202.thumb.jpg.f7a8457417af0baef2735c2e147e00e0.jpg

So this is also staying put for now - I'll see if I can find a few other characters from the film, just to give the set a bit more playvalue before I hand it over to my brother for his nippers.

Similarly, this Britains Honda quad and trailer set may find itself part of an opportunistically assembled farm vehicles gift set.

IMG_20231111_0029392.thumb.jpg.3a9220e3a7e680a1419344305b61b1fe.jpg

It's actually quite nice.

IMG_20231111_0029502.thumb.jpg.a42a702c76c4496a412fff769de70052.jpg

The quad has a towbar fitted, and although it will pull the trailer, I'm not sure if it's happier being towed.

IMG_20231111_0034432.thumb.jpg.de96538f2fc693024b5d97fc2575c091.jpg

Detailing is quite well done.

IMG_20231111_0029582.thumb.jpg.6a9c20820705aa4ee0f6ede88f54b395.jpg

If anyone's really keen on this, £2 takes both the quad and the trailer.

IMG_20231111_0030062.thumb.jpg.0956393c7b2239668eb322e5cc84778e.jpg

And then... There's this lot.

IMG_20231111_0030252.thumb.jpg.c5ea6ef3ad3b286865ec5ac7cb8a42f9.jpg

Seems to be a set, but I dunno how complete or otherwise it is.

And not just any set.

IMG_20231111_0030422.thumb.jpg.d764cfb00d337dd2e9427da2406df052.jpg

OMG US PRESIDENT MOTORCADE SET.

I've never seen anything quite like this before.

IMG_20231111_0030512.thumb.jpg.4a13436eb4aa5c234bdf5ba7646b5e2b.jpg

I mean, first of all massive LOL at the US President rollin' in a Mercedes.

IMG_20231111_0031352.thumb.jpg.86d027b66ba7967fd5317d8de9eb6486.jpg

Then there's the additional fact that this appears to be a rip-off of the Majorette Merc limo from the early 1990s.

IMG_20231111_0030342.thumb.jpg.32d071cd562ba0142cd946abfe504c72.jpg

No conspicuous maker's name, but...

IMG_20231111_0032142.thumb.jpg.85b649932313d4e3e98c5ec1cdd24469.jpg

This 'Secret Service' Mercedes G-Wagen is, apparently, a Realtoy item:

IMG_20231111_0031212.thumb.jpg.1a969c103cdd9aa751039265125f9c1c.jpg

So I'll assume they're responsible for the rest.

IMG_20231111_0032182.thumb.jpg.61ae6466222741eba9c43dee0df41b91.jpg

I think a fire service version of this has passed through my hot little hands before.

IMG_20231111_0032272.thumb.jpg.4453f6e7122019b10249d37d9082081a.jpg

It's not a bad rendering, though.

Can't really say the same about this Chevrolet Caprice:

IMG_20231111_0031422.thumb.jpg.fc613af95469c676ef521fd0b2efed74.jpg

It's pretty bad, and also tiny compared to the others.

IMG_20231111_0031482.thumb.jpg.fb528590feba38121dc1be81f9d37352.jpg

No idea what's going on with that front bumper, either.

IMG_20231111_0031552.thumb.jpg.68c5c5365fd3aa62272de865396f4715.jpg

Shonky AF.

IMG_20231111_0032062.thumb.jpg.c22c41340852e4f83475fbfdcea7dedf.jpg

Again, no clues underneath on the parentage of this one either:

IMG_20231111_0031152.thumb.jpg.7852028aef8d6f9fe462edb29d08c981.jpg

But what an odd little set.

Probably worth some digging on this, too.

Did it originally come with a laughably out-of-scale model of Air Force One too?

Mind. Boggled.

These three are all available at 50p each.

That G-wagen looks like a Siku rip-off. The Caprice is probably an original casting that wasn't copied from a reputable manufacturer, hence it being so much shonkier than the others. An odd set indeed and I wonder if it was ever sold in the US or just foreign markets that might not realise the absurdity of putting the US president in a Mercedes.

And the style numb Mini - it looks even more brilliant* up close. I bet it could tell a psychologist an awful lot about the nutcase who made it. No, I do not want it, not even for a quid. Having that thing in the house would give me nightmares.

Yes most of the racing and sports cars are 1980's to 1990s kit builts. They do look pro-built, but with no boxes or provenance who knows. There is also a lot of British white metal stuff, again from the 1980s and 1990s.

Highest bid so far is for a high detail 250 GTO. I'm guessing that it is an AMR (Andre-Marie Ruf), who was an artisan with a very high reputation. His models are very sort after. Current bid is $200.

The Cream version is a stand alone Corgi 470. It should have a light grey bed cover.

Not sure if that is a set. I can find the G-Wagon.

The Mercedes limo is easily found on Ebay as new.

But the third is being quite elusive.
