gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - Exo on taxi duty

a bit of fettling with shitey

the boot carpet was soaked and obviously has been for some time

IMG_5028.thumb.jpeg.b809966b5760453b6df580517e6a3b00.jpeg

the (broken) electric aerial was leaking above the battery :( i swapped it for a spare manual aerial and sealed it with a blob of silicon

i’ll clean this up and get a coat of paint on it - thankfully the metal is solid

IMG_5027.thumb.jpeg.0105b88702ee812e73d2a1a6fffcf036.jpeg

there were some gritty rubber mats in the footwells which hid a soaking wet carpet - i binned them and removed the seats for a good hoovering

IMG_5029.thumb.jpeg.bef4d6669b825f3f657e5fa58e1bcd84.jpeg

IMG_5030.thumb.jpeg.49c8a9ed350ac8e57c4918a84a4ea778.jpeg

with the roof down all day, they soon dried up, i stuck some cheap dehumidifiers in to finish the job

the pop up headlights sometimes didn’t pop up :(

i traced the fault to a duff switch (this lifts the lights for cleaning / bulb changing) and fitted a spare

IMG_5038.thumb.jpeg.8b7a1040ddeaa9646bb50743270e777a.jpeg

the top of the dash has been painted and was looking shabby

IMG_5039.thumb.jpeg.dd7f9d82458edadda2cb2b3914c13cef.jpeg

so i rubbed it down and gave it a quick coat of satin black.

the oddly coloured crash pad that doesn’t match the rest of the interior was annoying me

IMG_5030.thumb.jpeg.49c8a9ed350ac8e57c4918a84a4ea778.jpeg

so i swapped it for a black one i had in the loft

IMG_5043.thumb.jpeg.b712525e2524d3f1991db1cbecc13d3a.jpeg

looks much smarter now

the exhaust on shitey was a bit noisey so i rolled it up on ramps and investigated

IMG_5061.thumb.jpeg.45934b49696377d70f77cd1e580fec35.jpeg

hmm, not the best

but what’s that hanging from the rafters ?

IMG_5062.thumb.jpeg.7c7e7a43f52d8f5a9950c650a44ee41c.jpeg

close enough (there’s a rumour that manual and auto exhausts are different, i guess that’s bollocks then)

IMG_5064.thumb.jpeg.75f546cc085547d4d5d53df238d279b5.jpeg

this car is so clean underneath  :)

IMG_5065.thumb.jpeg.d31c9c7136f59adb760e77a6049ab8d8.jpeg

IMG_5066.thumb.jpeg.1957c3d721618fdd74d8ba770dc6647d.jpeg

sounds great - not look at me mental like mighty but has a nice tone and rasp, just as you would expect

i chopped the centre section and tail pipe off for future use

IMG_5068.thumb.jpeg.b8a64336732f6b11a9858aeb656483c9.jpeg

and had a look at just how shagged the back box is

IMG_5067.thumb.jpeg.2df76cb62d61493b0eab615ff1cd0dd8.jpeg

what a mess - i’ll drop that at the tip tomorrow

a quick drive up and down the street and it’s going well - the autobox changes smoothly and the little green car picks up well.

with the end of the month approaching and a rare dry day, i moved the Exo to the garage at my mams house to hibernate for the winter

IMG_5275.thumb.jpeg.2cb8c47fe0e0398c79d30e833ecc839c.jpeg

she insisted on coming along for the drive :)

236f8276-d8f1-491f-8abd-db0b0cabe3bb.thumb.jpeg.cd0ffdec7b435e7c9c2551ead71f9de8.jpeg

and the green machine took up residence in my own garage

IMG_5276.thumb.jpeg.2c9d76c4aaf0b5cdbb4e186ace55373c.jpeg

takes up a lot more space than the exo :(

first job on green was to swap the manky  dashboard binnacle (seems to have been painted and gone sticky in the sun)

IMG_5281.thumb.jpeg.7b85d09ecc92dec64afc864f2d74cc46.jpeg

for one i picked up at the scrappies last week

IMG_5282.thumb.jpeg.c237221075bc2bea7d41224d0717c2f1.jpeg

time to sort out the doorcards - there really is too much beige, i used the top sections and handles to tone it down a bit

IMG_5284.thumb.jpeg.b9785d31ec0e60e1114a3c8b9c800c38.jpeg

much better

time for a quick tinker under the bonnet - new plugs and an air filter both very overdue

IMG_5285.thumb.jpeg.9e1294903834e723cb7fd58b76a21dc9.jpeg

i fitted a replacement power steering pump

IMG_5072.thumb.jpeg.38b2d496c3ff44a7acbabce638b77d7a.jpeg

and jacked up the front end to turn lock to lock to bleed new fluid

bit something wasn’t quite as it should be - a sort of sloshing noise was coming from the rack :(

i pulled back the steering gaiter and got soaked in oily coffee

IMG_5288.thumb.jpeg.54d8df7b4aed00b6c641cdb3c85ca7b6.jpeg

that’ll be where the steering fluid has all been hiding - add a replacement rack to the shopping list. at least i hadn’t just dumped a brand new bottle of fluid into it.

not ideal, but it was great being able to crack on with the spannering in a warm dry garage.

  • 3 weeks later...

a trip down to see the mazdadudes in darlington and £50 later, a replacement steering rack has been sourced and installed

IMG_5603.thumb.jpeg.6f99b49606d3b4530bd1967041d35407.jpeg

at which point i discovered another leak in the fluid cooling pipe work :(

fortunately i had a spare from the exo donor but fitting it was a massive pain.

all done now and the power steering works perfectly

i’d drained the radiator while fixing the power steering so thought i’d give the engine a flush. this involved moving the car outside for the first time in a while

IMG_5605.thumb.jpeg.8e67274f003be5a3ed011277905babf6.jpeg

thermostat has seen better days - i’ll order a new one

IMG_5604.thumb.jpeg.7af6d355749fe1c3f20c1a816f6b8ad1.jpeg

flushed with the hose for a good while and refilled, i needed a quick test drive up and down the street

only problem, the seats are still in the house - this handy toolbox will have to do

IMG_5607.thumb.jpeg.6ddbf2b688d2353d34fd7b883ab993ef.jpeg

i’d given it an oil change while it was jacked up and it’s running very nicely now, even just up and down the street, the car is lovely to drive - i’ll look forward to getting this one out on the road soon :)

when I bought the green mx5, I phoned my insurers to swap the cover over from the black mx5 - for reasons unknown, they couldn't do this but quoted me a new (classic) policy at over £600 :(

out of curiosity, I ran a meerkat this afternoon

ScreenShot2023-12-18at15_51_06.thumb.png.5e6a6b1c1ed6124a9e0164cc975e891a.png

that's a bit more like it - maybe I'll run this one as a daily for a few months when the weather improves :)

an odd quirk of imported mx5s is that when you pull the stalk to flash your headlights, they don’t automatically pop up, you need to raise them manually by pushing a button on the middle of the dash - hardly convenient.

a common solution is to fit this little guy

IMG_5609.thumb.jpeg.e1fa30e010301c53df0fd6eb61683d1e.jpeg

to the back of this connector

IMG_5610.thumb.jpeg.8ea16ac40bcca87b014ad4efcffa909e.jpeg

the red/white wire is the main beam feed, the white/black goes to the motor so when the main beam is activated, the lights will now pop up and make you smile :)

despite the thermostat arriving in world record time, i couldn’t be arsed fitting it tonight. instead, something much* more important:

oh dear, that looks just a little bit crap

IMG_5629.thumb.jpeg.409362ce586f915c8f7b0751e7d05bd9.jpeg

yep, needs to go

IMG_5630.thumb.jpeg.e357446cd67c130240c30cfd344d49ec.jpeg

the connector had slightly melted too so a spare was spliced in

IMG_5631.thumb.jpeg.ec0f7927bc0d4c79764e5534653a60c7.jpeg

that’s better

IMG_5633.thumb.jpeg.3f1dbed71fdde4c7ec3a257d805c7c61.jpeg

IMG_5634.thumb.jpeg.54fd5ab0700333fa4a9584068ca1d012.jpeg

nice and bright, even with whatever cheapo bulbs were fitted

IMG_5636.thumb.jpeg.8e14d717bca9ca194bd3cacdd828cf2d.jpeg

and some silliness :)

i’m fancied a bit of a christmas eve hoon but the exo is sorned, the black mx5 is sorned and the green mx5 is still in bits (and sorned) :(

it’s just not the same in the bini

IMG_5661.thumb.jpeg.2b2b4624ad20294329a4b73b0f7ded71.jpeg

but the roads were nice and quiet roads so it got a good blast anyway :)

happy christmas folks

as the rain had stopped and my head was no longer thumping from too many festive pints last night with @DVee8 i had a go at doing a radiator flush on the green one

these bottles of snake oil have been on the garage shelf for quite some time, i hope they still work

IMG_5702.thumb.jpeg.6cecb8a0aee1485ab0a02ee679c84a13.jpeg

step one - empty the system and flush with water

IMG_5700.thumb.jpeg.b0f498e008fd70dde9489b58584479bb.jpeg

step two - bung in bottle one and run at fast idle for 30 mins

IMG_5693.thumb.jpeg.747d131653d5cae73ed297c8c20c64f8.jpeg

step three - empty it out and try not to scald yourself

IMG_5696.thumb.jpeg.25cc9bed2166f6c91791dae803df269f.jpeg

minging !

step four - refill with fresh water and run for a further 5 mins

drain it all out again

IMG_5697.thumb.jpeg.2540c019073f572f34f1da3b57072319.jpeg

step five - bung in bottle two and run for 15 mins then drain

IMG_5698.thumb.jpeg.9d059da51f3b844c8dac0f86954eec61.jpeg

step six - refill with fresh water and run for another five mins, drain then flush with the hose

IMG_5700.thumb.jpeg.b0f498e008fd70dde9489b58584479bb.jpeg

IMG_5699.thumb.jpeg.c1a3084a70834ecfa2efd8095e2e201a.jpeg

step seven - drain it all again and finally fit a new thermostat and bung some coolant in.

a quick test drive up and down the street and all is well, no leaks and lovely fresh coolant in a nice clean radiator :)

the mighty mx5 is Sorned and hadn’t been used for a while so i thought i’d better check on the state of the battery - turns out it was not a kick in the arse off flat :(

now, should i

fetch the battery charger ?

or

tax the bugger and go for a hoon ?

no contest, really :)

a quick stop for supplies

IMG_5719.thumb.jpeg.f5864bcf430ad2abf22c2b79749bb97b.jpeg

and a proper thrash round the back roads

battery is now fully charged, tank is now fully emptied and the back end is minging filthy - great fun :)

i do have a spare manual gearbox and flywheel, all it needs is a clutch kit, pedal set and prop shaft and it’s a days work to do the swap.

but…it actually drives really nicely on the autobox, i’m more surprised than anyone !

it will be for sale at some point as i’ve decide to keep the black one and do the welding myself, feel free to pop in for a look next time you’re passing :)
