Double quote. The temptation to fit a seat to that rig and get it going is overwhelming.

Found a very good website by a man who is modifying a Healey Sprite. Quite a lot of shaving metal away from the Bell housing and making new engine plates. Then all the remote shift needs to be reworked as it sits several inches further back.

I'm oot 😄

It's totally unsuitable imo.  Spitfire overdrive has to be the way.  But I wont divert this thread.

that wooden handbrake grip was looking a tad sorry for itself

IMG_6362.thumb.jpeg.5114ed00e69eef83dcd2e4527983beb9.jpeg

a trip to the breakers and £20 later !

IMG_6363.thumb.jpeg.33f6cd5686215155a68ee8bcb617e69e.jpeg

much smarter

IMG_6365.thumb.jpeg.4a4e8f9be0a9763f65f786958a851250.jpeg

ideally i would have refinished the wooden one but i’m not confident of not making a mess of it

i also replaced the connector for the fan switch that i’d smashed ages ago

right, enough spending on this thing - it’s time for it to go !

i popped round to see me mam yesterday and checked on the Exo - the battery was showing 11.9v despite sitting idle for six weeks - so i gave it a try and it fired up first time :)

sounded so angry echoing off the garage door - can’t wait to get it back on the road next month

IMG_6415.thumb.jpeg.30178092fb710873e24bb528756f9d7a.jpeg

meanwhile the green monster sits tucked up patiently awaiting a new owner

ok then, just once more

i spotted an ad on marketplace for a set of mk2 standard suspension and being as i was passing on my way to edinburgh at the weekend, it seemed rude not to.

the current suspension is just that little bit harsh

IMG_6441.thumb.jpeg.e37c5314452058a6ae41f241283177d8.jpeg

so has been replaced with

IMG_6435.thumb.jpeg.698121898ab8a519c76775b69965b950.jpeg

i got a fright when i dropped it down off the jacks

front arch gap - blimey 😦

IMG_6438.thumb.jpeg.96bde282e31c960f7bb6d3e753ccb6f2.jpeg

rear arch gap - holy fuck 😦

IMG_6439.thumb.jpeg.55f0fc0a096e619ef3f4760de8d4057d.jpeg

hoping it will settle down, i took it for a quick drive

last week on the old ebay coil overs

IMG_6350.thumb.jpeg.77d295c3a0fb76f9e39af639c6a0af05.jpeg

and now as mazda intended it to look

IMG_6445.thumb.jpeg.8f9e3ff9b2fba05d4882daf94acb15b2.jpeg

thankfully it has settled down nicely, and the ride comfort is so much better - suits the autobox perfectly

two very different cars - but which one would you choose ?

IMG_6457.thumb.jpeg.5b33fe5433c194d75078092d33937550.jpeg

IMG_6458.thumb.jpeg.3f4a0367a3c1481f75f557b807c9eded.jpeg

sadly i can’t keep them both

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - unlowering the green machine

i had a go at cleaning up the manky coilovers that came off the green machine

image.jpeg.79365bef0a6b7477dcbee13b38ad9ff9.jpeg

warm water and fairy liquid did precisely bugger all so i popped out and purchased a few litres of “special organic solvent”

worked a treat :)

IMG_6517.jpeg.b67e54a1cf3c9dde1a219906065b11f9.jpeg

IMG_6515.jpeg.670ab18f334df03014923c2084ecc08b.jpeg

the downside being that what the previous owner had told me were HSD coilovers turned out to be maxpeedingrods :( the cheapest of ebay kit (i had been a little sceptical at the time)

IMG_6516.jpeg.94be23ee7ac84468f8168af443f13809.jpeg

no surprise the ride was a bit harsh.

undeterred, i stuck come photos up on fb marketplace at approx half the price of a new set and sold them within three hours !

despite being marked DOT SAE my led headlights are not likely to pass an mot which is due next week

IMG_6524.jpeg.f82bedda2cfa53cc8511ca100a26c472.jpeg

IMG_6522.jpeg.5374ab2ffff9ccd0a9dcfc92a19c6ad8.jpeg

they’re nice and bright but the beam pattern is no good

IMG_6521.jpeg.96e74d468db30f0c4dd9daaf4dbb544b.jpeg

so it’s back to old fashioned H4 lenses and bulbs

IMG_6587.jpeg.7d1342fa00482896f18349e61b305f44.jpeg

if that is all i had to worry about for the mot, i’d be a happy camper but there’s a patch of welding needed on the rear inner sill and a brake line needing replaced. hopefully scaryoldcortina can fit me in next week

the green one was slightly hesitant at cold idle, a likely cause being the ht leads of unknown age (i’d replaced them from my stash of spares when the car first arrived)

IMG_6582.jpeg.753e40b562b0c975d4a9ab2931dc92e4.jpeg

i’ll just borrow the good ones off the black car

(note the firing order is different between the two engines)

IMG_6580.jpeg.74e91d86480426aa390cf198ce0ca302.jpeg

IMG_6583.jpeg.6fef4d615c8f89b5215328aa894e4237.jpeg

gave them a quick rub with wd40 to clean them up

IMG_6581.jpeg.6ca4a47984cedc8c90ec6b4ed3e7cb74.jpeg

and the green one now runs perfectly

IMG_6584.jpeg.300f411550aac2321469fddb1883f9cc.jpeg

yet the black one runs just fine too (edit) like a bag of shite now :(

IMG_6585.jpeg.47bbfe7330a755fe9661e8fe8f8c4951.jpeg

i’ve ordered up a new set anyway - can’t go wrong at these prices

IMG_6590.png.b4cb1fa4123393586c3331a012913ece.png

i’ve actually got someone coming to view the green one at the weekend - might have the Exo back on the road soon :)

the standard steering wheel on an mx5 is about 350mm but i fitted a smaller 320mm sports! wheel. this is great but the indicators are obscured and i’ve had a couple of occasions recently when they haven’t self cancelled and i’ve not noticed :(

IMG_6591.jpeg.7a2302fefeb5f1e62abc289a84bd11c0.jpeg

some ingenuity was required

IMG_6588.jpeg.31d125060e40e3786b1cf7a0bdbeb1a3.jpeg

IMG_6593.jpeg.ae0e200a99e4bf48da747d052a83b5ae.jpeg

no chance of not noticing these little buggers !

IMG_6592.jpeg.d4284e6f9fd006cbcfc127623500dff3.jpeg

yes, they really are retina meltingly bright !

this is more of a prototype of something i’ve got planned for the Exo but might need to rethink it slightly :)

Fantastic! I'm seriously considering building an Exocet. I've wanted to build by own kit car for years, it was Ron Champion's Build Your Own Sports Car for £250 which got me interested. The problem is that I don't have enough spare time at the moment and i know that in a few years time MX5 prices will be through the roof! I reckon that I need to find a rusty MX5 now and stash it away somewhere.

there’s plenty of those around !

if you happen to be in the area, feel free to stop by and have a look at / go on the Exo, it’s currently in storage but will be back on the road as soon as the green mx5 is sold.

which should be next week :)

i’ve been watching this project with interest, some good engineering and quite entertaining too

still nowhere near the road but there do seem to be plenty of other projects going on at the same time, we’ll worth a watch

i’m sad to see it go but he was so excited when he came to collect it that i know it will be in good hands.

Do excuse the potentially stupid question, but why would the firing order be different between both MX5s ?

Not owned one of these, yet. But if they're anything like @DavidB AW11 Mr2, then I want IN.

now you mention it, it doesn’t make much sense - maybe just the way the coils are wired up ?

3 1 2 4 on the 1.6

4 1 2 3 on the 1.8

i should have bought one of these years ago - what a cracking piece of kit ! and excellent value thanks to @DVee8’s trade card.

the lad in the shop had a chuckle when he saw i’d come to collect it in the mx5 but it fitted perfectly in the boot

IMG_6711.jpeg.437ddc5e4a49e7ddd5dca8aa142d5d6c.jpeg

weighed a fucking ton when i tried to lift it out !

also i took a short cut to avoid traffic and got the mazda a little bit dirty

IMG_6712.jpeg.6170ac626525b66bfdfd9bef8c101627.jpeg

good news is that it’s had its rear sill repaired and passed its mot  :)

(with the usual advisory for the exhaust !)

Is it a wasted spark system ? If so, the firing order could well be the same...

Exo has been rescued from hibernation - took a little more effort to push out of the garage for some reason

IMG_6735.jpeg.4b6f42f7879d3912471320a392015cf5.jpeg

i’d suspected this might happen so had the compressor with me, a quick check of the fluids and the engine fired first time :)

a brief hoon was had but on the damp roads, the crappy chinese tyres really showed their true colours - they’ll be getting replaced asap

IMG_6736.jpeg.6dcc4125b765fbdef195e535f600682a.jpeg

in the meantime i’ve refitted the steelies with semi slicks, they drive so much better than these ditchfinders

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - look who’s back
  • 2 weeks later...

the Exo was on taxi duty yesterday collecting @NorthernMonkey from Durham station.

as i’ve not met NM before, i didn’t know who to look for - i needn’t have worried - most passengers leaving the station regarded the Exo with amusement / bemusement but when one came round the corner and exclaimed “oh fucks sake” i knew exactly who he was :)

we fannied on trying to adjust seatbelt harnesses but, as we had a bit of an audience, chose to drive down the road and pull over on a side street

IMG_6951.jpeg.d7ea191b33a61842d2a0a69135fc1326.jpeg

harnesses adjusted, i gave it the beans ! there’s a nearby road with a hefty crest - i’m not sure but i think we may have caught some air :)

stopping at a convenient petrol station, it was time to swap seats and let NM have a go

IMG_6949.jpeg.3f8367e868037de3f4a5af7c773106d5.jpeg

he wasn’t in a particular hurry so i directed him onto some back roads to have some fun - i think he likes it.

some time later, we arrived at scaryoldcortina’s place for the actual collection to take place - the big blue merc in the background - must have been quite a contrast coming from the exo !

back in the garage, i found these stickers i bought a while ago

IMG_6940.jpeg.223fc489738569def3bb80013a91ea01.jpeg

i hadn’t used them as they weren’t particularly good quality and creased from the post.

might as well try them before chucking in the bin
