Err no. That requires the expenditure of more money and thats just not happening. Its getting what ive got and thats it, I had however overlooked one thing. And that was to check the paint was still okay. Sure enough it was an unopened tin. Score! Wasnt the colour of the car tho! Ahh well on it goes, Two coats of coach enamel slapped on with a far too small brush. Flatted back to get some of the dust its awful wobbly and you can still see the cracks i couldnt be arse to dig down too. but it sort lf matches the look of the car, i pressed in on the edges to give a bit of a worn look, a bit improvement for little cost, just time mostly. SiC Posted January 7 Share Posted January 7 I've found old fashioned t-cut brilliant for polishing up flat cellulose paint. Bought up my MGB GT paint a right treat. Then Collinite 476 to provide a wax protection. Don't use too much though as you'll be there forever buffing it! However I haven't done it since (did it a few years ago now) and still looks good. For the roof, what about a vinyl top? I thought it looked pretty decent on mine. (I still really miss that car!) If you ever think about selling your VP, please let me know! Andyrew Posted January 8 Author Share Posted January 8 Smurf it. With the 3 tyres being old and one very old heavily cracked. New boots were on the cards anyways. Some 155 80 12s were ordered, hifly super2000s at £116 for 4. The wheels were an almost purple, deep blue and rather scruffy. A quick knotwheel back. Zinc primer and a thick coat of the same coach enamel went on. Ring and cap polished up a an old tyre lobbed on for a test to see how it looked. Its not a shade of blue id choose but like the roof , its a big improvement for no dosh. All five wheels have now been painted and new boots will go on this week. With the wheels off i stuff the tyre inflator on and pumped up the dropped side. As much as it could (100psi ish) and i looked for leaks , i expected/hoped it would be a rusted hardline pipe but sadly its the flexi to the rear displacer. Bugger! Andyrew Posted January 11 Author Share Posted January 11 Tyres all fitted up now, still awaiting the fluid pump to arrive. So its now time to tackle the displacers. Having spoke to the very plesant lady from hahs ltd yesterday it seems they are happy to do the repair same day. So tuesday im going to jump in the steed and take a jolly to telford. Drop the displacer or maybe two in and go see what i can explore in the area. Why not make a day of it. While its pricey (relative to the value of the car) and im sure there are cheaper alternatives if you do this and that etc etc. A fast and proven repair is my prefered option. SiC Posted January 11 Share Posted January 11 I don't think you can go wrong with them tbh. Given the original hoses have lasted 50 years or so, these rehosed units will probably outlast most of us. Agreed the full blue wheels look a bit shite, with the trim rings and caps on they look alot better. The blue is not a colour i would have choosen to buy but its what i had so on it went. I initially fancied painting them a metallic copper orange, but that required expenditure. The autobox is a bit pony, not happy untill warm as the engine oil is probably too thick so its a bit hit and miss at first. Once warmed up it changes smoothly it is very short geared normal driving. Up to 3rd around 25mph. Press on and its okay. Very Revvy at 50 ish. Engine mounts are tired and theres a drone from the exhaust which i ill fix to make things a bit smoother. SiC Posted January 29 Share Posted January 29 Try finding NOS engine mounts. Modern ones delaminate within a few hundred miles. I believe autos have different mounts to manuals. My manual 1100 was very short geared. At 40mph in 4th it was screaming and felt like you needed an extra gear. Iirc 3k rpm or something like that. Gets a smidge exhausty in the cabin with the windows down. Will have a look for leaks. Went to drive it today so gave it a quick oil check, seems we are now below min ( in fairness i never checked it beforehand ) having been told the car is running 10w40 motorcyle oil i have nowt to top up with, so today the car got a little break. So a quick read says 10W-40 JASO MA2 motorcycle oil is indeed the best for autos as it's designed for minimal wear to clutch packs and such.
