DodgeRover
Ignoring the elephant in the room on the moderns of none other than the Q plater being registered correctly some of these are bloody horrid! I agree on the cut down maestro vans, a saloon roof would be much more suitable, actually I don't know why they didn't turn out a maestro pickup, they did marinas and itals and seemed to shift a lot of them What good is a pickup without a tailgate? It's neither use nor ornament!

JeeExEll
Aha !!A tailgate. Most definitely. Saved from the banger track and it's back being useful again. Top effort.Imagine jumping a red light in a Fiat Tipo and being side-swiped by this. Rover probably wouldn't even notice and just carry on up the road. PhilA
Yup - I tried to buy it before you left for US - but was pipped by another on RR IIRC. I couldn't get back to collect with work commitments…. it was bloody lovely!Shame you didn't. It sat rusting in a field for 10 years, then got sold on eBay a couple years ago. sierraman
Pick ups if these sizes aren’t all that useful as you’d imagine, you can’t store any tools in them for obvious reasons and the payload isn’t up to Transit sized stuff, so no good for shifting a couple of tonne of sand or whatever. They are pretty much useless. I just use mine for driving to and from work, can't take it shopping, can't take any decent sized load in it, can only take one passenger. As a car it's pretty pointless but I love it regardless. Exiled_Tat_Gatherer, Carlosfandango, robinmasters and 1 other

vaughant
How do you get on legally with the changes? I'm assuming 100% legal means q plate etc but doesn't it show up at MOT time? And can you just put "2dr" on the logbook like people I know back in the 2000's??

If you send in pictures of the conversion to DVLA, they used to [not sure about now] send back the V5 with it registered as a pick up. In lieu of pics, an engineers report may suffice......... In lieu of pics, an engineers report may suffice.........As sad as it sounds I like an E36 as a pick up, I've seen a few good conversions over the years (albeit in picture form only) and thought they looked really smart. Do agree they're pretty pointless unless you put a solid cover on. Quite liked the Mk7 Escort van as a pick up too.

In lieu of pics, an engineers report may suffice.........If you attempt anything like that the registration is automatically cancelled as it no longer represents the vehicle it is attached to. The only exemption would be if it has a seperate chassis. The correct route involves a BIVA - it's long and complex, have a look at blackpopsracing thread on retro rides to get an idea of what is involved. Other less legit routes involve registering abroad as a pickup in one of the countries that doesn't really care what the EU rules say then importing and registering again here - where upon the vehicle should be given the body type appropriate to it - still a chance of disaster if called in for a pre registration inspection though. JeeExEll
The P4 Rover above was done 'recently' (2012) and it's DVLA legal right now. There must be a way round the complicated barriers that are being put up.
Rocket88
Rover P4 might be considered to have a separate chassis, although that's open to debate...........
JeeExEll
That's a good point. So body mods of this scale are not seen as affecting the structure.
Dead_E23
Here's one Rover prepared earlier. Most of this will have disappeared by now. As you can see, in those days they put holes in the outriggers in the factory, but a modern self-lightening chassis like the one in my Defender develops holes every year all by itself, with a ring of yellow chalk around each one. If you keep feeding the holes with MIG wire more of them will appear as if by magic. Supernaut, Bfg, SierraMikeHotel and 6 others
panhard65
I imported this Renault 5 pick up from France some years ago but had to sell it when I moved. It did reappear a couple of years ago but had been cut up into a trailer which was a shame as it was a proper French conversion.I also had a very rare Renault 4 F4 that was converted in the UK by a bloke from Bridgwater. He built quite a few back in the 70's/80's and having now met him reckons he might still have all the tooling etc to build them again. Finally there was my Hotchkiss which was modified in France then further work was done when I got it here including the Harvey Frost.
