As it's our first sunny day*... why not sit in the municipal car park, three feet from the car? Then take the dog for a short walk and allow it to lay an egg which you will leave proudly on display on the prom. Later, root about in the boot for the string bag holding the flask and sweaty orange cheddar & tomato sandwiches (medium white Sunblest). The flask, containing stewed Sainsbury's Red Label tea, will have one screw on cup, his lordship will have to use the one saved from the broken one. His lordship? Well apart from snapping away with the Instamatic he will spend most of the time sellecting horses at the back of the paper.

Visit the toilet block for a wee and then leave. The car will boil over half way home. Another grand day out.

* in East Yorkshire at least.

Saw almost exactly this today. Old couple , folding chairs out having tea in a lay bye on the A66. The finest of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District minutes way , but we’ll choose to sit six inches off one of the busiest roads in the north.

They had a very nice looking Rover P5 coupe though,

That sounds like a day out at a classic car meet to me. There'll all be out today talking about how George had to check the points this morning as the Escort wasn't starting on the button. And look at our nice chairs, we've had those since 1976 don't you know.

Phwoar; promo people hawking Sealink tat! Judging by the crane in the background actually in a queue to get on a british rail ferry. The 70s really were all glamour. 🤣

Funny you should say that about the chairs. My Dad said exactly the same once ( might have been a different year in the 70s) before sitting down and hitting the ground as the fabric gave way.

World Cup Rally 1970. At the time the longest rally ever devised. Even longer than the London to Sydney Marathon two years previously.

In a weird rallying/football tie up it ran from Wembley as current holders of the World Cup (little known fact, England won it in 1966, it does get mentioned occasionally) to Mexico City, the hosts of the 1970 cup, timed to arrive a week before the first match. But it didn't go direct, or as direct as is possible, they tried to go through most of the countries involved in the world cup so they initially headed east to Bulgaria before turning round to get to Portugal before being put on a boat to Rio de  Janeiro then heading south down the east coast of South America cutting across then back up the west coast all the way to Mexico.

The above picture is very likely at Dover hence the Sealink ladies but more interestingly that is Jimmy Greaves who Ford somehow talked into a co drivers spot alongside some proper rally drivers. The eventual winner was Hannu Mikkola in another Escort. It is why we have Escort Mexicos.

They don't do rallies like that anymore. They couldn't of course. Whilst there were special stages at various points on closed roads they still had to travel between these stages on public roads as fast as possible.

A-rare-photograph-of-Linda-Vaughn.thumb.jpg.a83c0e0c6835d071bd3518bcf6cac7f0.jpg

American motor personality Linda Vaughn is known by her fans as ‘Miss Hurst Golden Shifter’ and many other titles. She started her career representing the sport as a teenager and has been a notable ambassador for over six decades. You might have seen her as a regular fixture across most major racing events.

When she was younger, Vaughn had an interest in dentistry which is why she spent hours at the dentists’ lab. We’re glad she moved her passion over to cars because we can’t imagine it without her.
