  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - milestone mileage on the Exo

since fitting the smaller steering wheel, the top half of the speedo is obscured :(

i have a gps speedo app on my phone but prefer to run waze for traffic /  speed camera alerts

it lives in a phone holder under the dash

it occurred to me i have an old phone and a case i was about to chuck in the bin

the digital speedo needed a test drive so i headed for the hills and ended up paying a visit to casa @loserone

IMG_3422.thumb.jpeg.8504aad7b1cfd3746eec9a0844b504ce.jpeg

we drank tea and talked shite then it was time for a quick blast in the exo

i think he likes it :)

IMG_3420.thumb.jpeg.e7d8ad65e1da3790e063b4389a64c891.jpeg

i had a quick* go on the clio 182

image.jpeg.20101f9670573ff85d2fe354a66f13a7.jpeg

damn, that thing is fast :)

great fun, except for the rain on the way home - it stings your face at 60*mph !

  • 3 weeks later...

as mentioned, on the way back from @loserones place, it started raining. heavily.

i keep a waterproof jacket and hat in the ‘glovebox’ so pulled over and got them on. the thirty or so miles home were quite an adventure, i was well and truly soaked.

one mile from home, i took a tight left hander and the crappy tyres let go - i was maybe only doing 20mph but exo was heading for the kerb and i had no say in the matter.

coming to a halt, the low front end had taken a battering and i was beached.

not sure what to do, i sent a message to @DVee8 “help” “bring a rope”

within ten mins, he and dvee8jnr2 arrived in the mighty xtrail, hooked up a rope and dragged the stricken exo back onto the tarmac.

i tried the engine which fired up first time but the contents of my radiator were spread all over the verge - i guess i’m getting a tow home then.

thankfully only a mile from home, on an alarmingly short tow rope, we dragged exo home safely - with only a minor panic when i discovered i didn’t have the key in the ignition and the steering lock came on mid corner.

so let’s see what damage i’ve done

oh dear

i recently picked up a spare radiator, i guess now might be a good time to fit that - will need new fans though

IMG_3450.thumb.jpeg.9a4bdf1dc01da82b7f644f523a9f9130.jpeg

i had a go at straightening the radiator brackets

IMG_3451.thumb.jpeg.2ccbf25e0ad2678a25acd8373fc0e5d6.jpeg

not to reuse, but might be handy as a template

IMG_3452.thumb.jpeg.3dbcfd8fa1c4f3c398304f6576213111.jpeg

but first there’s the matter of the anti roll bar mount needing straightened

IMG_3456.thumb.jpeg.b7fca9e0312d26ac11ca632608008a72.jpeg

the mounting tab was damaged so i chopped it off to give the scissor jack a flat face to push against

success !

IMG_3458.thumb.jpeg.f49e583cbfb324e2faac200fd6df8536.jpeg

one minor casualty

IMG_3459.thumb.jpeg.cabcc9b75250daa79eecc8a2c002dd04.jpeg

i removed the remains of the mounting plate

IMG_3460.thumb.jpeg.f923f459ca140407f55ff98280a20a62.jpeg

and got busy with the welder

IMG_3462.thumb.jpeg.db079aba6f2625a1d5ee1e397de3c56e.jpeg

my welding is definitely improving

IMG_3469.thumb.jpeg.127f16f2b9b27dc409240e2c52f58fa7.jpeg

actually that’s a pretty good job

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - crash, bang, wallop, what a twat !

fans were purchased

IMG_3739.thumb.jpeg.d66a11ecb6dce042e5037c7c5aac5bde.jpeg

at which point i discovered i’d bought a mk2 radiator that has different fixings to the mk1 i’d previously used

instead of side mountings, i opted to use the top

IMG_3740.thumb.jpeg.3f9a75206f3b4df1fb2803bb8ddbb07f.jpeg

which left a problem - how to fix the bottom

IMG_3742.thumb.jpeg.d98f48cb8b868943c46d567ed7ddf17b.jpeg

materials were purchased and i got to work

IMG_3762.thumb.jpeg.63e484458f29954011418853c5233c4c.jpeg

some sort of rubber bung required - hmm, might as well keep it genuine mazda

IMG_3761.thumb.jpeg.ab6b0c0a5013c852ede9f3376914d5ac.jpeg

IMG_3763.thumb.jpeg.bfb62dea0085c7d44e8f345ad5c65cd1.jpeg

proper engineering going on here

IMG_3764.thumb.jpeg.147125e907e4ec4fc578c43caab2c2a9.jpeg

brackets bent to shape

IMG_3765.thumb.jpeg.79f853ef4f6fe1a7bbd90065d7dffb9a.jpeg

IMG_3771.thumb.jpeg.265cb3ad0e9900824ceffc3d4ad2ebbc.jpeg

that’s a decent fit

IMG_3773.thumb.jpeg.f757269e2f07a542ea8c350e93937e1f.jpeg

ok, fill it up and see how we get on

IMG_3776.thumb.jpeg.909500806c80f3d1f23293ba8c04ff66.jpeg

no leaks so a quick run up and down the street

a minor casualty

IMG_3777.thumb.jpeg.ab1a375a66922f85d0a03f49a3e32864.jpeg

ok, seems to be running ok - i’ll stick that bonnet back on and take a longer test run

the aero catches were scrap, an alternative solution is required

IMG_3783.thumb.jpeg.16fe4f9473aff8b5fd9e1f20639b72e8.jpeg

works for me !

good news is that other than the steering being slightly off centre, damage appears to have been minor - i am one lucky guy

at this point i was fed up of the car being filthy so took it outside, removed the seats and gave it a thorough clean

removing the seats i discovered a minor casualty

IMG_3789.thumb.jpeg.24e4c99fedf26e405818e296439b7c1e.jpeg

that kerb was a solid lump to do that !

looks so much better clean

shame about that ruined front corner :(

i got in touch with mev and discovered a replacement bonnet would set me back the best part of £500 and i would have to collect it in person from gloucester - might as well have a go at patching it up first

i cut some reinforcing patches from scrap aluminium and clagged them in place with PU adhesive

IMG_3830.thumb.jpeg.03f6803836f68f2de08297104affc2dd.jpeg

horrible stuff

IMG_3828.thumb.jpeg.fc009702a4f48fda4e0c626e7ff6aedd.jpeg

but it will hopefully be strong enough for now

that’s one ugly repair :(

an alternative bonnet latch solution is required as there’s no strength left in the sides where the aero catches were fitted

the radiator mounting rail is about 3cm below the bonnet and might be a good place to start

IMG_3941.thumb.jpeg.3e1825f8b640439fe913ea756ea67c2a.jpeg

i considered using rivnuts but to fit a decent size would weaken the rail, i’ll make my own mountings

IMG_3942.thumb.jpeg.4fe2521ee2b986b49441b4475446fcd9.jpeg

IMG_3943.thumb.jpeg.b277ffb876697303612868daed7e06eb.jpeg

now how to line up where to drill through the bonnet ?

a handy looking bolt was modified

IMG_3956.thumb.jpeg.0af8bf4f9b9209118b436576f786280c.jpeg

IMG_3950.thumb.jpeg.5d1cd8a9efcd490c0a1c568558fe321b.jpeg

and screwed into place

IMG_3946.thumb.jpeg.8eab9b3c5269ea6b2ede036f2147e13a.jpeg

a dab of grease on the point and close the bonnet

IMG_3947.thumb.jpeg.5d2372b51b71d834eafca9dd7d4d7e22.jpeg

bingo - drill here

IMG_3948.thumb.jpeg.c14eb14669cc5eaeaf0fd76b47a259d1.jpeg

very satisfying

IMG_3949.thumb.jpeg.64277891eb357ddea44f1540986aa690.jpeg

more alu plates and goo

IMG_3953.thumb.jpeg.011882d3f4c2bdad979e58376eb1307b.jpeg

IMG_3954.thumb.jpeg.8ae87a9a8403b897fb4c3e8e843b87dd.jpeg

IMG_3952.thumb.jpeg.dbd6f45ffafc62cebc490153537d2032.jpeg

a quick coat of hammerite for the rail

IMG_3955.thumb.jpeg.bdeb356f17dad8cf4728b93c75deda91.jpeg

correct length bolts and a cm of fuel hose

IMG_3958.thumb.jpeg.6797828474a1489514101d661984b748.jpeg

drop the bonnet and fasten those bolts

IMG_3959.thumb.jpeg.3408af3ccff2980f4fa7ba6a2dd452fa.jpeg

i’ll paint the washers black and call that job done

IMG_3963.thumb.jpeg.91cdca25336515342b5e230d48b3ad4d.jpeg

i must remember to keep a handy allen key in the glove box !

a quick test drive and the bonnet is good and secure, i’m pleased with that.

@gm, looking much better now, aye a bit of a oh fuck moment.

Aye the rope was a little on the short side, just aswell No2 son was around as i couldn't see the exo behind the xtrail.

Still laugh at the irony of the steering lock, so close to home.

Sorry to see about the off,  glad it isn't anything too drastic.

Could you use bonnet pins in place of the bolts using similar devices to your hole locator above?

i could but they’re a bit ugly, and this fix was nice and cheap :)

if you decide to splurge on a new bonnet

i can collect week before xmas as ill be in worcester if theyre urpen like

i probably will replace it at some time, the problem is it’s such a big but fragile piece - will probably need a van.

i do know someone local who is just at the beginning of his exo adventure so may persuade him to bring an extra bonnet when he collects his kit - might be a few months but it’s not urgent

the radiator really is exposed hanging so low at the front, i wonder if there is one from a different car that might be a similar width but less tall - i’ll have a nosey around the scrappies and see what alternatives might be appropriate.

as for tyres, my plan was to “use these up” as they’re ok in the dry - the back end is nice and lively but in that lovely controlled mx5 way. shame they’re absolute dogshit in the wet :( i’ll stick a set of rainsports on and avoid rain in the meantime.

definitely interested - would you be able to measure it and i’ll see if it would work ?

i’m happy with the fancy new aluminium one i’ve just fitted but imagine it’s a matter of time until i’m going through the same situation

the mazda rad is 65w x 40h so quite a bit bigger - the polo one might be a useful upgrade

you can see how low the current set up is here - i deliberately fitted the bracket like that to protect the drain screw but it is alarmingly close to the ground

IMG_3990.thumb.jpeg.39d9960a3a5384c84b786fd62d2e4969.jpeg

not actually any closer than it’s predecessor but the bonnet is sitting a couple of cm higher now.

if you’re sure it’s spare, i’d love to have a play with the polo rad, will mean more fannying on with brackets but could make for a neat solution.
