Donauwörth

Every two years, the city of Donauwörth bans cars younger than 25 years from the roads for the last Saturday in August.

Result is one of the best car shows in the country, nothing but old cars all over the town!

Let's start with the important things:

Very nice Rancho X

This had an interesting feauture, it is fitted with a wheel chair lift. Grandpa can be hoisted into the rear to join the family holiday trip and doesn't even need to leave his chair. According to the owner, this was quite a common conversion, because back then the Rancho was the only passanger car with sufficent interior hight for this.

Mr. Skizzer, you need to get that conversion, assures you driving being driven in your Rancho for lifetime.

More Matra.

Fantastic! Some really lovely cars there. I'd be up for a road trip one year, if any of mine are working properly at the time.

Funnily enough, at least a couple of the handful of surviving UK Ranchos have the wheelchair conversion, including the brown one that lived near Trigger and this one that was for sale a couple of years ago:

What an eminently sensible thing to do.  Personally, I'd make it every single Saturday.

Yes! Let's do it.  I really have a hankering for a proper Euro road trip.  Donauwörth is 760 miles from Coventry, apparently, and about twice as far into Europe as I've ever driven before.

Thanks for the inspiring photos pshome.

This is great. Britain should take note, sadly I think the vast general population will moan about thier "human rights" being "interfered with" if we ban moderns on the road for one day in some town/city.

I'm up for the 2018 trip, hopefully, I *may* have the 820E ready by then and I can always jump down to Brussels and sleep at my Dads home.

This looks excellent.

What is the punishment if caught driving a car under 25 years old?

you know, this is a very old city which has it's traditions.  First time offenders are flogged using an original cambelt from a 1962 Glas 1004. Recidivists will be chained to the trailer hook of a 1952 Beetle and dragged through town. Stubborn's get tarred with Rustoleum and feathered with the remains of the seat foam filling from an Opel Ascona. Fines are doubled for drivers of Audi A6 and BMW 3 series.

Thanks for pshoting the pics and the links to the videos :) What a variety of cars, event now added to bucket list. But what has gone wrong with the German car industry since the 60s and 70s? Audi had a design office then and not just a photocopier with different scales, BMW made stylish saloons and not ugly SUVs and GM (Opel) weren't reduced to sticking their badges on Daewoos :(

Well, at least we still do have a car industry.... 8)

I don't think it's a specifically German problem. My best guess is that there is a secret global society that agreed around 1990 that all cars should look the same, cost the same and become redundant with some expensive electronic failure after a preset number of running cycles.
