Not a Neutron but a Proton - OMGHREGCONTENT

After being let down by name unmentioned on blue forum on a Carina 2, i suddenly remembered that the aeroback had been lurking in the old dears garage for over a year.

Expressing her opinion that it had started to take root i decided it was mot time.

Apart from slipping clutch and blown sidelight bulb all is fine.

Wish me luck!

Yep, so failed!

Not that badly and mostly stuff i knew about, although cv gaiter was a surprise.

O2 is probably related to the knackered autochoke which was causing problems even before i bought the car. Also sitting unused for over a year won't have helped.

Luckily Ecp and gsf have their 50% off discounts on this weekend.

Could do with a N/S front strut top mount as mine makes a clonk noise when turn to left full lock.

Tyres were never going to pass as they all leak air and i just put on whichever leaked the least. So at the moment its got a mix of Mitsubishi Charisma 14" alloys and 13" Proton steelies. I've got the GE spec centre caps (as pictured when owned by BigAndy) for the steelies so may go with these. Votes pls!

Aeroback! I want one!

I know of another one close to me that i'm trying to get my hands on. Its a j-reg aeroback in green, 1.3gl with 26k on the clock, got hit in passenger door so Cat C but will go again. Belonged to the blokes dad who passed away so he's having a hard time letting it go. That said, its been off the road for 2 years and is piled high inside with crap from his house.

Gonna keep trying to get him to sell.

The wheels side of things, put the 13s on one axle and the 14s on the other not both same size on one side. That should get rid of two, maybe 3 fails. Brake fluid is easy to top up so that's 4 down. A cv boot, new wipers and an Italian tune up may sort the rest

Going to stick with the Alloys for now but will probably switch over to steels when i inevitably change my mind, which is about as often as the wind changes direction :)

Italian tune up is only going to go so far on this one. One of the cars former keepers has dismantled the autochoke, so now its a swine to keep running from cold. I usually have to boot it a few time at idle and then its ok.

Having half a tank of year old fuel in it isn't helping matters and the fiver i chucked in there (because tight ass) to boost octane really isn't cutting the mustard. Plus, i don't know when it was last serviced.

Having said that, as the CO2 level didn't 'officially' fail, i'm not going to worry too much about it as its not on the fail sheet at VOSA  :whacky055:

As it was a nice day, and more to the fact that it's going back in for the retest tomorrow, i decided to show the Aeroback a bit of love and give it a good clean. Didn't use anything too fancy on the cleaning front, just some Qx dual action spray crap from ECP which i found to be mediocre at best (i'm going back to using ArmorAll). That considered, it didn't come up too badly considering how filthy it was from just sitting in the old dears garage for a year.

It started like this

An post-5607-0-08825300-1494195319_thumb.jpg day it was not!

Needed to do a bit of shopping for upcoming holiday so thought i'd give the Aeroback a little jaunt to Bath as Bristol city centre is always just a sod to navigate.

Big mistake!

About half way there i noticed that the temperature gauge was sitting rather too close to the red for my liking, especially as it usually sits bang on in the centre. So pulled into layby and got out to investigate. I was confronted with the niagra falls pissing out from underneath BOLLOX!

Bonnet opened, i noticed that the plastic cap for the coolant overflow wasn't on properly. So pushed back on which sorted the leak from the top. But water was still flowing freely from the bottom.

As the heater was still blowing hot i figured that it hadn't done a MGZR_2_s.jpg

and nursed it the 3 miles back home.

Safely back, investigations undertaken, culprit found

Both bottom and top rad hoses feel hard and brittle to the touch, so they're going to need changing. The coolant definitely needs doing as its black as night, and the rad cap rubber seal seems to have swollen massively so will need to change.

Did a bit of research and i can get the correct rad from ebay for £32.00 delivered and £5.00 for the cap.

My own fault for leaving it parked up so long but no major damage done!

That's my old car - nice to see it still going!

The autochoke removal was my fault as it was fubar. I was planning on rigging up a manual choke setup, but then life shit happened and it had to go. I also got the alloys for it, but I'm not sure they suit it at full height.

Good to hear from a previous owner.

Yep the plan is to sort a manual choke mechanism out, there's a flexi choke cable in the boot but i think its going to need a more rigid setup.

I'm undecided on the alloys. Its true they looked better when the car was lowered but the ride quality was harsh and i got fed up with it bottoming out.

I think i'm either going to stick the steels back on it or try some different alloys.

  • 1 month later...

Not much has happened since my last post. After finding pricing for Nissens rads on evilbay for the aerobacks was around £100, i found that the rads for the Satria and Persona 1.3 is basically the same, £30 delivered so have got one being delivered by end of the week.

Then just got to get the clutch done!

Now that i've got a fellow Aeroback fancier in the form of Dollywobbler, i thought i'd share a few pics of an uncirculated early Proton brochure that i scored off of the bay.

Notice that the GLS model gets such decadent extra's over the GL such as 2 door pockets and a tilt and slide sunroof (fitted by the importer)

I can scan the whole brochure if anyone would like?
