She started her career representing the sport as a teenager and has been a notable ambassador for over six decades. You might have seen her as a regular fixture across most major racing events. When she was younger, Vaughn had an interest in dentistry which is why she spent hours at the dentists’ lab. We’re glad she moved her passion over to cars because we can’t imagine it without her. 5speedracer, DavieW and CreepingJesus
DSdriver
On 6/4/2023 at 3:43 PM, Yoss said: World Cup Rally 1970. At the time the longest rally ever devised. Even longer than the London to Sydney Marathon two years previously. In a weird rallying/football tie up it ran from Wembley as current holders of the World Cup (little known fact, England won it in 1966, it does get mentioned occasionally) to Mexico City, the hosts of the 1970 cup, timed to arrive a week before the first match. But it didn't go direct, or as direct as is possible, they tried to go through most of the countries involved in the world cup so they initially headed east to Bulgaria before turning round to get to Portugal before being put on a boat to Rio de Janeiro then heading south down the east coast of South America cutting across then back up the west coast all the way to Mexico. The above picture is very likely at Dover hence the Sealink ladies but more interestingly that is Jimmy Greaves who Ford somehow talked into a co drivers spot alongside some proper rally drivers. The eventual winner was Hannu Mikkola in another Escort. It is why we have Escort Mexicos. They don't do rallies like that anymore. They couldn't of course. Whilst there were special stages at various points on closed roads they still had to travel between these stages on public roads as fast as possible. No mention of the DS in the background! Yoss
23 hours ago, DSdriver said: No mention of the DS in the background! Over a hundred cars entered with a really varied field as there were no real regulations. Lots of independents but the three biggest works teams were Ford, Leyland and Citroen although Citroen upset a lot of people by technically selling their cars to their drivers making them private entries. This upset a lot of the actual privateers because they were fully factory prepared with a full works back up en route. Of the hundredish cars only twenty three finished. The top five were all mk1 Escorts or Triumph 2.5 PIs. Leyland entered quite a mixed bag. Their main attack were the Triumphs but there were also several Landcrabs, a couple of Maxis and a single Mini. The Mini was never intended to finish but was designed as bait for the Escorts. The plan being to go flat out on the European stages to try and tempt the Fords to keep up and possibly break something. It was never intended to get past Europe. Leyland Australia entered one of the Landcrabs that finished the London to Sydney Marathon two years earlier and had been left there. So it was prepped by Leyland Australia with an Australian crew and shipped back to London to set off for Mexico. That's one well travelled car. A fascinating event. As this is supposed to be a picture thread have some pictures. goosey, DSdriver, 5speedracer and 7 others
MiniMinorMk3
My dad took us to the start of the World Cup Rally at Wembley Stadium. I remember the Rolls with the roof top exhausts because when I got home I immediately modified my Matchbox Silver Shadow with the aid of Plasticene. The Marshalls of Cambridge Maxi of Tish Ozanne, Bronwyn Burrell and Tina Kerridge... has been restored and is being used in some historic events with Bronwyn Burrell at the wheel. I saw it on the Harewood Special Test during the 2018 Rally of the Tests. Austat, egg, Yoss and 8 others
