twosmoke300
I have a horrible feeling dugong is going to be right on this one. Won't be long before it is snuck in that all tax exempt cars can only be used on verified and organised events. This will be inforced via insurance restrictions .On the plus side one of my customers with a 73 stag is delighted.
Sloth in a bowl
Old car world is populated by a combination of Eeyore and Cassandra. If the Government was to say "all owners of old bangers are to be given a bucket of cash,a nice jumper, and a free snog with Eva Green", the car fora would be full of "just you wait, this is all a plan to send us to concentration camps". Does the concentration camp have a decent workshop? as a nice jumper and a snog with Eva Green is really tempting, but I need an extra sweetener. oman5, dugong, Angrydicky and 1 other
Angrydicky
Excellent news. Still 11 years to wait for the Maestro, but it's better than nothing. Personally I think making these new "low emission" cars tax exempt was a very bad move, the government lost a lot of revenue from it. The type of people who can afford to buy a brand new car can surely afford £150-£200 a year in road tax. Lets just hope this doesn't lead to more restrictions for old cars. If it's going to be limited mileage based I for one will be disabling my cars' odometers, as I won't give up my cars without a fight. Let us also hope Labour never get elected again to remove it. nigel bickle
Well, I'm pleased (who'd have guessed!) They haven't shafted the pre 73's yet, so why would they target the 74's on? I don't care, I'll just enjoy the saving, perhaps amending my legal ones as it comes into force. Of course they will target us, eventually. But as Ratdat says, after a brief explosion of 70's motors back on the road, it'll inevitably subside over the forthcoming decades. So be it, we're a dying breed. Happy days.. HMC
If even a couple of years back we'd have MOT exemption pre 1960 and this rolling tax exemption I would have beenSurprised. We can argue about the merits of it all and what th future may hold, but the overall trend in the uk from those 2 changes is less regulation and a bit of goodwill. Who would have thought it? We can patch the roof if needs be, B wing won't miss their table tennis table. That jumper better be really good, with an out of shape reindeer and one arm longer than the other. Eva, get over here now!!! tooSavvy

lisbon_road
Great news. My own view is that they are so old at 40 years that additional restrictions are unlikely - after all, how often do you see one? Isn't this also an attempt to harmonise across Europe? Still, won't have that much effect for a while - I thought all 73-74 cars had beens scrapped or become ringers for older ones.
Junkman
For some people, the glass is not even half empty, it's broken. The glass is twice as big as required, exactly like those newfangled cars. The very idea that those could be tax exempt in 40 years hence makes me want to campaign for NooLab back into guffament at once. meshking
I couldn't find the info on the finance bill or budget documents, is this built on or before 1st Jan, or registered? I'm hoping built - my 2cv is registered 3/1/1975, presuming the Belgians weren't working over Christmas, I'm hoping it was built a bit before! I think it is the date of build rather than registration and some clubs currently have got details of chassis number lists for 1972 build cars to aid people with stuff registered in early 1973.As my Z has a November registration date then I have not looked too closely at this though. meshking

Guest Breadvan72
Is that Vesper Lynd from Casino Royale? WOULD. That was her breakthrough role. Her best role in my view is as Sibylla de Lusignan (C12 Queen of Jerusalem) in the full length version of Kingdom of Heaven. Sadly, Orlando Bloom is useless in that as in everything, but Mlle Green can act as well as look haaaaaaaaawwwwt.
