carlo
Treated the daily 405 to a valet today, am very tempted to give it some proper paintwork treatment so thought I'd see how good it was underneath all the grime. Very hard colour to keep clean though. loserone, Lacquer Peel, bramz7 and 32 others

bramz7
Wow that's absolutely lush. 2 litre automatics are without doubt the best 405s. And yet I have a 2.1 diesel 605. With leather. More fool me. cpjitservices

Carlosfandango
Oohh that's lovely that is. While I've never owned one, I've been in a few and they really are rather nice. Most of them over here were daysul and poverty spec so it's lovely to see one that's all fancy like..Auto too! Yum. CFD

My 405 lost one every time we took a bend It helps if you bend the springs outwards to keep them tight, and also if you happen to have quite a few spares! Junkman
That's why I refuse to look at 406es. What hilariously gopping turds those are in comparison.

CanaryinManc
I had a 405, immediately followed by a 406. 405 was the better drive but fragile and always something going wrong; 406 slightly less fun but faultless until I burnt it out by parking it on long dry grass, but that wasn't the car's fault. Junkman
Didn't mind the 406, it gave some good service to countless taxi drivers. The 405 still does. Don't forget they are still chucking them out at a quarter million a year rate.To put this into perspective, in Peugeot's worldwide operations, including Opel/Vauxhall, the 405 is the third best selling car: https://fr.motor1.com/news/223594/peugeot-405-meilleure-vente-2017/ Only the 208 and the C3 find even more buyers. The 406 in comparison was a short lived flop, which is little wonder considering the unbearability of its ugliness. Talbot
I had many 405s. Every one of them was reliable, comfortable to drive and a great car. I still lament scrapping one of them due to a failed clutch and gearbox. On the assumption that it's not been scrapped too, I still have a 405 TD executive estate languishing on a farm down in somerset. Not seen it in years though.. SierraMikeHotel
Still an itch I'd like to scratch one day. It would have to be a estate though, in decent nick and with some spec. Rocking horse shit I would imagine!

CanaryinManc
Whoever likes the look of the 406 is entitled to his bad taste, of course. Each to his own. 405 and 406 are equally good looking to me. Also 406 produced for 9 years in France and another 2 in Egypt so hardly a 'short-lived flop'
Junkman
Also 406 produced for 9 years in France and another 2 in Egypt so hardly a 'short-lived flop' I said in comparison and only in this context it makes sense.Yes, something produced for eleven years is a short lived flop IN COMPARISON with something it was supposed to replace, that is still being produced after 31 years, and that is still the third best selling car of a corporation. Felly Magic
JM's perfect pickup truck would be the Iranian made 405 pickup, which I think could actually be rear wheel drive, those crazy Iranians eh? Junkman

sierraman
The 406 was a bit more durable as well, interior a bit less prone to falling apart. 2.0 hdi better on fuel than the old XUD.

barrett
I can't believe people are arguing over the relative merits of two MODERN cars on here. And anyway, everyone knows the 405 is better. Especially those 405s with the really great ride quality, what are they called? You know, the really funky good-looking ones, with the flawless handling. They've got those super comfortable interiors. You know the ones I mean, what the hell are they called. The ones with the headroom, and the seat/wheel position so people over 5ft7in can drive them. What the hell are those 405s called again? Oh, yeah, I remember SierraMikeHotel, Eddie Honda, Lacquer Peel and 9 others
barrett
Seriously though, since driving across France the other day I've been pretty turned on by the idea of a 405. They really have aged well. What do you lot reckon one would have to spend at a friendly ga rage having the head gasket done on an XUDT? Because in all other respects this looks like an absolute belter. So nice to see a pre-airbag version in a nice spec like this https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-405-1-9TD-GLDT-mot-2019-NO-ADVISORIES-GENUINE-CAR-499/113008534122?hash=item1a4fd5626a:g:07EAAOSwDZ1bBHOC Junkman
Andy F
Fond memories of a friends 405 estate, brand new at the time. Yours looks stunning, I've had to have a look at eBay. Much prefer the 405/406 to the 407 monstrosity anyway! Both 405s and 406s are very hardy, but I do like mine to be green blooded.
