In in early January, the Freelander of dieselyness and some hidden rust.

Sort of a none mover but it finally got moving in May, as it was out from hiding in the garage for 2 years (being welded) and back on the road with an MOT the Rover 827

This quite a lot for me but very casual by AS standards.

That’s not bad going for me. Usually I buy at least 7 or 8 cars I don’t need per year. ZS180 is definitely a keeper, wanted one when I was younger so to have a Monogram with the V6 is perfect.

In and out was the Atlas converted Renault 5/Extra wheelchair van.  Bit of a rollercoaster for the short time I owned it and a shame ownership ended the way it did with engine failure a couple of weeks before moving house, I was looking forward to really getting this little van sorted, it was surprisingly fun to drive.

The Princess is still here and hurtling towards 14 years of ownership.  A quite literal non-mover as I type this due to requiring some extensive repair work... again.

... and the Lanchester LD10, also a non-mover due to being blocked in the garage by the Princess (this is weirdly the most recent photo I have of it but it still looks like this).

Will 2026 be the year the Lanchester finally makes it on the road after leaving it in 1984?  Will I ever stop welding the Princess and replacing head gaskets?  Anything can happen in the next 12 months!

I'm going to cautiously post now because I don't anticipate any changes before the end of the year 😅

I entered the year with:

The Xsara Picasso which is a superb an-car, it's wanted for nothing other than tyres and servicing this year. #OMGSNOKAOS

And finally my MG ZR105

IMG_20241117_143107.jpg.fdab81695cb2d704cbb463ae7357140d.jpg

Now, chronologically -

In then out (February)

This VW Polo seemed like a nice car that deserved a second chance, I threw many new parts at this, sadly it wasn't meant to be as it rewarded the next owner by being a bit of a sod of a car. Still on the road - but I wish it turned out better.PXL_20250203_191700699_MP.jpg.16c9efbca5b231af19fc3a1e0e4fc8df.jpg

Out (March)

The ZR had to go. I spent a lot of time and effort bringing it back up to standard as it was a one owner car, but I don't think I'd have been able to keep it in such good condition if I continued to use it daily. I was glad that a very enthusiastic buyer came along and it's become a cherished vehicle to him - last I heard a couple of months ago it's had some minor improvements and continues to provide sterling service. I really enjoyed owning this car, but sadly I couldn't justify keeping a small impractical hatchback when the running costs were equal to a more useful car and I don't have decent storage to keep it safely tucked away to save on costs. I'd definitely like to own a ZR160 at one point, when I have more space.

PXL_20250301_123635429_MP.jpg.fdcfc31dcf20e09340573d8cd5778d3d.jpg

Out (August)

It was finally time to say "goodbye" to my MK2 Focus - if it stayed another 2 weeks it would have been 6 years of ownership with me. An utterly superb and reliable car, arguably one of the best I've had, but it was just sat there doing nothing. As it happened my next door neighbour was in desperate need of cheap wheels a few months ago, so I offered it to him and he snapped it up. So it's not really a goodbye, it just resides next door now 😅

PXL_20250814_165431857.jpg.d05c702f0d697cc0b2a907083037ec23.jpg

In (November)

A completely impromptu purchase was this one family owned 2003 Rover 45 1.6 Impression. A very clean and low mileage example which I felt was too good of an opportunity to miss. No grand plans for this one other than to give it a decent service and get some use out of it which should allow me to get up to date on some jobs on the 620ti.

PXL_20251112_075004333_MP.jpg.959fcaee4a76441be9a8b7d24253d933.jpg

Staying:

The 620ti won't be going anywhere. I can't believe it's been a year already of owning it. It really hasn't given much trouble at all, I can't fully remember everything I've done to it without looking back at my notes but aside from all the recommissioning work and welding it's had a set of shock absorbers this year and a radiator that's waiting to be fitted as the current one has a tiny weep.

Plans for this one are to catch up on some odd jobs, I'm thinking of getting the injectors tested/refurbished in an attempt to address the occasional cold hesitation. I still have a spoiler which I need to paint and fit but that's a job for when the weather is nicer.

PXL_20250815_181243681.MP3.jpg.0471b728b69867397ab04520bb20c1cf.jpg

The Xsara Picasso will be staying, it's basically as good as a van with the running costs of an average car. Such a useful vehicle to have around, perfect for holidays etc. Not sure if the 45 will be with me this time next year, depends if anything else takes my fancy - that would be the one to leave to free up space and funds :)

Been my busiest year for cars for sure,

Started out with these 2

A 2006 Audi A6 Avant IMG_5320.jpeg.e7ebd152e692d38fc6c9bae40fc06d1e.jpeg

1963 Rover P4 90

IMG_5414.jpeg.b295221ee74e822ee7765e1efa3df258.jpeg

Out went the P4 to @jollyfkr2 and in came the 2004 Mazda MX5 IMG_5549.jpeg.c608493a31176c88eff8d1e712da026b.jpeg

The Mazda didn’t stay long, I ended up swapping it for this 2005 Jaguar X-Type 2.0D which has passed through the hands of a few forum members and is now owned by @SchaefftIMG_5790.jpeg.0bb85dd8df4c156ca5c0c06505d61e0a.jpeg

The X-Type ended up being roffled for incredibly cheap to make room for my 1993 Jaguar XJ! IMG_6171.jpeg.dc78b33d1ffbe72b1b6d497fc40e9643.jpeg

I had both the A6 & the Jag for a bit but along came my Daughter so I had to re-think the car choices.
Out went the A6 & the Jag and in came my 2004 Vauxhall Zafira.
IMG_7042.jpeg.63423b301b0575cad07af0b4a738bdf6.jpeg

Whilst I had the Zafira I got silly again and bought the red Hyundai Getz from @EightMegs

IMG_7426.jpeg.4cfff7ae7e43adc2093cbd32ee9e15d1.jpeg

And also bought this Alfa Romeo MiTo from @bramz7IMG_7524.jpeg.09dd41ec7fec087f012070d4c006cdf3.jpeg

It didn’t stay long though and I ended up swapping it for this MK1 Ford Mondeo. IMG_7606.jpeg.6b84c575c2bc38f850fa6afd13d37390.jpeg

I really didn’t on with the Mondeo and was after another daily so the Getz ended up going over the rainbow bridge and with the money I bought this Mercedes C220 to replace both the Zafira and Mondeo off @N DentressangleIMG_7690.webp.2fcd9a295233bed92c8cb167d734c5a4.webp

Out went the Mondeo and in came the Peugeot 205IMG_7911.jpeg.916167518328986cb8b2b6a8a346a337.jpeg

Now for a car I really didn’t expect to own this year! The CityRover, I still can’t thank @Split_Pin enough for giving me the opportunity to own this, it’s an amazing car to pot around in. IMG_9045.jpeg.813a5f10a9eb9f88b338b0dbe2ced120.jpeg

The Merc went and in came the final car of this year. The 2005 Hyundai Trajet. IMG_9127.jpeg.3989c5c78ad33a5b64d5e57bb3bd0212.jpeg

It’s been a very busy year for me. Hopefully next year will be a bit calmer!

A risky buy from BCA Bristol with a day of MOT, it then passed first time but cost me a few thousand pounds in repairs later on. Oh well!

The Corolla suffered HGF.

The Delta was shit.

The 147 seemed to hate being separated from it's previous owner so began to shed bits, had binding brakes, hit a deer and when I checked underneath, it was all rust. Oh well.

I'd really like to get a proper old car again next year, I'd love an original Tipo but that can wait.

Quiet year at Gaffer towers by all accounts, work has been so busy it’s left little time for shite related capers.

IN

First came this OG Discovery that with a bit of fettling has turned into a right peach. Now tucked away for winter although the itch to sell is strong and a mate is desperate to buy it. Know id kick myself when the good weather next year comes around though.

IMG_2510.jpeg.81fc55d250ac5dcc202c71237fe1053c.jpeg

Next came this Discovery 3 loaded with kit but with a blown engine. Currently sat waiting a TDV8 swap and the extras taking off to go back to stock.

IMG_1331.jpeg.b4c287fb88254ee329b747151019c05c.jpeg

Collecting the Discovery above lead to blowing the engine on my own Disco that I used for work, which saw me rush out and panic buy this

IMG_3369.jpeg.9434fe2b753a7fce9b874b6d5f88c2ff.jpeg

Which has been one of the better decisions I’ve made in recent years. 13k miles in so far and not had to put a spanner on it.  Work vehicles that just work is an interesting concept I’m still adjusting to.

Last one in this year was this Bini in 1.6 diseasel flavour. I bid on it on copart whilst distracted thinking it was a Countryman and was a little shocked when I won and looked closer! All turned out well in the end, it’s a very high spec one and it’s found a home with me mam who is very much enjoying the 60mpg and £30 a year tax.

IMG_2600.jpeg.eb79bfe2d1d4659c4883ec802f037f20.jpeg

OUT

Only 2 out this year I’m ashamed to admit. First was this fridge van that I finally got around to completing the engine rebuild on, due to all the spare time working the Navara had now left me with…

IMG_2623.jpeg.f778f0e02094cb6035b4ad4d63fdc70f.jpeg

The 2nd was this cheap copart freelander, now displaced by the cheap copart Mini. Now lives with a friends Dad who’s bought it for camping and mild adventuring

IMG_0503.jpeg.b1f0ec520bec8f085a6c278806be290b.jpeg

NON MOVERS

My Discovery 3 (with a 4 face) that’s sat waiting since March for another new heart. Madness really but it’s too sentimental to let die, although it’ll be semi retired when it comes back so hopefully gives me an easier time

IMG_1134.jpeg.c5c920a31ed9e27e431545a979ec3e71.jpeg

Next up this Discovery commercial that owes me probably around £5-600. I’ve just used and abused it and it’s never complained. It’s come to the rescue of the black one both times it blew up and will now give up its engine as it’s 3rd rescue. Autobox is bound for a mates one and the rest of its bits will go on to help keep others alive (temporarily). Sad times but it owes me less than the cost of an unknown engine and it’s so rough it has little value complete.

IMG_0881.jpeg.c3175c56502798291422322211016a8c.jpeg

This is the wife’s daily and has survived another year without getting the chop. We love it but it’s a bit overkill for going shopping a couple days a week, 10/10 best tow vehicle though. Took us on holiday twice with the caravan following the death of the black Disco, and has been completely faultless overall.

IMG_2186.jpeg.de1fb57d14d4bcbc765f1b6dda4ba4ab.jpeg

Finally is the Golf, after 2 years of being laid up I looked into the coolant loss issue which turned out to be a cracked cylinder wall. A good used engine was sourced and dropped in last month and it’s now become my commuter til the black Disco is done. Good car, makes me feel 20 again

Mazda - MOT expired, will require a replacement lower rear quarter welding in as a minimum before it gets another ticket. Barely used it the last couple of years so maybe time to consider moving this one on?

Beat - like the BX, unlikely to see the road in 2026 due to work schedules. Currently residing in the garage, so at least it's safe and dry.

Laguna - MOT now expired, and somewhat surplus to requirements now the Mondeo is here. Intention is to get it re-MOTd in the new year to keep as a hot standby vehicle in the event of one of our main dailies falling over.

That's it really, it's been a quiet year for me motoring wise and next year looks like more of the same. MrsH and I need to have a frank discussion about thinning down the fleet.

I should talk to you about the mx5.  I used to have a green one with a black hardtop

This thread reminds me both of how much I've done, and how little I've achieved.

This years goal was to reduce numbers, so let's see how I got on with that.

Out:

The XM was roffled off and landed with @rob88h. Despite all the pain in getting it useable*, I really miss it.

In:

My dad gave me his old E320; this was meant to be a quick fix, MOT and sell - it has become much more drawn out due to a lost log book, which is a bit annoying. It's sat waiting to go in for a ticket once the V5 lands.

IMG_6483.JPEG.d4d6b6eb2cc635178cddf5ad54cdc2d1.JPEG

Next up is my brother's Celica. He's decided that he doesn't really want to pursue his interest in cars much further, and this has been left up at the stables with my cars, awaiting transfer to my yard. Whilst he's suggested that I can take it and do as I please with it, I think he would get a lot of enjoyment out of it once running and so I'll keep it to one side until I have time to sort the welding it needs and get it good enough to go through a ticket. Once done, I'll hand it back to him. Possibly a job for 2026, but more likely 2027+ at this rate.

Then we have this lovely thing, which was free to a good home from @DaveDorson. I've been cracking on with the work on this, and it is reminiscent of the XM project. I am continuing to try my best to make sure that it ends up back on the road, despite, uh, some adversity I've been encountering with it in the past few days.

IMG_6645.JPEG.d32dfb4c346de754f23f0672e0e96365.JPEG

Continuing the 'free to a good home' them, @RoadworkUK kindly let me take on Donkey. I'm incredibly excited at the prospect of daily driving a base spec 306, and can't wait to get some work done on this. The Alfa and Merc need to depart first though.

Non-movers:

I fixed the EPB on the Disco this year, by cobbling together one ok unit out of the old knackered one and the cheapest second-hand original unit I could get. It has been providing reliable service since, despite being an incredibly ropey example of the breed.

IMG_6482.jpeg.38bde785956bed74bf28fb12fad7e023.jpeg

My partner is still running our mk2 Clio, the 1.5 DCi is still chugging away and giving 60 odd mpg without any real expense required. She does need something bigger now, and so a 2026 goal is to get a slightly bigger family car. I doubt this will get sold though, more likely thrown in the yard as a backup - they seem to be worth fuck all, and it's been in the family long enough that I'd probably miss it if it was gone, more than the few hundred quid I'd get for it at least.

IMG_0990.JPEG.6d0845cc48345d1ed2c17ddc7a983419.JPEG

The Proton MPi is still here. I've done loads of work to it, sorting out the shagged roof liner, holes in the roof, some wiring problems, jammed heater cables etc., I just haven't painted the roof or re-sealed the sunroof. It's been put to one side, and I will probably resume work once I have a bit more time/money/better weather at my disposal. I could have done less to it and got it sold, but with a leaky roof and useless heater I feel it wouldn't have been long for this world if I had of punted it out by doing the bare minimum. I sometimes question my sanity.

IMG_0174.JPEG.8ca0e1c47a59becd403b7b22e61ca8d6.JPEG

Our E320 CDi; 'the front fell off'. I didn't put it in for MOT after the radiator carriage fell off for the millionth time. I need to strip the front end, repair it properly, and put the springs off of a lower spec model on it to increase the ride height.

IMG_9465.JPEG.7c46be948959f74877ce383564b973f7.JPEG

The Pontiac. This needs the sill ends welding and some other remedial work. Because it's not something I want to sell, it gets put off constantly. It still runs and drives, although one of the HT leads or coil packs is sparking externally when I ran it the other day. My partner says I need to fix it ready for our trip to Italy and then Croatia in July next year. I love the idea, but I don't know how I'll find the time.

IMG_5189.JPEG.d8a7c952b7ca72f2f0da49f44f083522.JPEG

The LS430. I replaced the vacuum lines on the inlet manifold, and ever since it's not been the same. I enjoyed driving this across Europe, and should have probably parted ways with it afterwards. It's out of test, and sat waiting some love. It would be at the yard already, but it's too bloody big for the trailer.

IMG_2766.JPG.191c5dceefab80522269119ef38f8635.JPG

The ZX estate. I have accidentally turned this into a bran find. I did finally rebuild most of the rear beam though, and in record time! I think it's only been about 2 years since I took it off...

IMG_8303.JPEG.657aceeb23657894808c08b13264b46d.JPEG

The Lada is currently here on the driveway. The rot was probably at the point where it was ready to be scrapped, but I'm a fucking idiot so I cut out the majority of it. I haven't put anything back in, because again it's not something I was planning to sell and time is money. Once I sell some of things I am not attached to then I should be able to come back to it.

IMG_7436.JPEG.0f48b94826865f89af13b32e0af4f464.JPEG

The Audi 100 is behind the stables where I left it. It has the dreaded KE Jet fuel injection, and I got it to a point where it starts and can be ragged around the farm. Everyone hates it because it stinks and it is noisy. I love it, but haven't touched it since.

IMG_2741.JPG.688f81d598d09f59f41ec85868aefecc.JPG

The ZAZ 968 is pretty much in the same state it arrived in. I did remove the electronic ignition and refit the original kit, but it still wouldn't spark. I've tracked down a wiring diagram, and promptly filed it under I'll do it at some point. It's mostly staying around because there is space to keep it, and I can't imagine there are any other examples I could afford.

IMG_1173.JPEG.4c8b98b8d46a7019b0ffbf88c82ec7c5.JPEG

This BX 1.7td is still up at the stables. I bought it because the other one I have was taking to long to sort, and I wanted to have a drive of one. I drove this, it broke, I fixed it, and then it failed the MOT. I now have two of these estates which are taking ages to sort. Winning.

IMG_6397.JPEG.4124c509cb741fd07184effbb2d762ce.JPEG

Here's the other one for completeness. It runs beautifully but it pretty rotten in all the usual spots for a BX (i.e. everywhere). It needs to go to the yard, as it's in my way at home. A snapped clutch cable and burst hydraulic line stand between me and my dream of achieving that.

IMG_5704.JPEG.a2829dfb9d31b69903c3a4bd2ad684f5.JPEG

The Volvo 940. These are great cars, but this was a pretty poor example. The PO apparently enjoyed sliding it, as is evidenced by the amount of bent alloys it came with, and the damage to one of the outriggers. It also has the world's shittest straight through exhaust. It does deserve saving, just not today.

IMG_7963.JPEG.ba37845837bfd1bdf7283ac4966bf90b.JPEG

Next up is another BX estate. I picked this up for free locally, after seeing a months old advert for it. The plan was to strip it for parts I needed, and sell the rest. It's the most rotten car I've seen in my life. I've kept it out of spite, as when I offered it for breaking in BX groups I was berated for entertaining the idea of splitting up the oldest example of a phase 2 estate known to mankind - a car so rare and important, no fucker had wanted it for free. I drove it round the farm until a rat ate an HT lead. It becomes safety MOT exempt next year, at which point I will evict the mice from the carburettor.

IMG_0521.JPEG.bdad6c5beabc71a7c55061f5b806cf74.JPEG

This is my partner's Legacy Outback H6. The top has fallen off the bottom. It's only kept around so that I don't feel compelled to buy another. I think I've had about 7 legacies in a row now, and this new tactic has stopped that number climbing. I don't know why I keep replacing them, as I can't think of a single one that didn't cause some form of heartbreak.

IMG_0480.JPG.c720de9a67be8f154f36e305a8f2165c.JPG

If you hadn't noticed, I have a dangerous mix of sentimentality and space. so here's a Prelude I've owned since I was 21. I went through a pattern of recommissioning it once every few years, then the windscreen exploded and the value of even shit examples went up. It's sat in a corner until such a point that I'm ready to assess my life choices.

IMG_1355.JPEG.dbb740a02b4a324ae1dddfd3f8f87521.JPEG

My V6 Shogun Sport still lives up at the farm. Last winter I got it stuck in the mud, and embarrassingly forgot about it for long enough that the ground was dry by the time I remembered - it drove right out. It's going up the yard, and will probably get used for pay-and-play sessions at Slindon next year, as my son is old enough to enjoy that now.

IMG_6137.JPEG.42802e58b5e24f36f19ffd6cc64a3922.JPEG

The Favorit is still about. Like many things, it needs welding. I hate welding, so it's sat until such time that I stop sulking. It's on the list to be sold once finished, despite the fact that I miss using it as my daily - there's something pleasing about how basic these are.

IMG_4918.JPEG.194cd934b21e021ec2010b9201d1f1f5.JPEG

The Zastava/Yugo is also still knocking around. I did a lot of work on this, got it working and welded up, only to find it is really down on compression on one cylinder. I put it aside and didn't get back to it, as at the time I thought I was keeping it. Now I'm expecting to sell it once done, so keep an eye out for it in my project thread in 2026, as it should be fun to pull the engine apart on it.

IMG_4456.JPG.414f74936c586d56c2072b3ddd653f8c.JPG

The V8 E430 is still sat waiting for some love. Probably should have parted ways with it, but it only owes me about £250 so I'm not exactly feeling in distress. The gearbox went bang, I bought another gearbox, and then that was kind of it. I need to pull my finger out, as it was a really nice car when it was running. I'm pretty sure I won't get another V8 for the same money ever again.

IMG_9034.JPG.f2056ea1b076fc3d42b46f75a7060b84.JPG

The SLK320. Even by my relaxed standards, I'm not sure why I haven't weighed this in. I put a lot of work into it, but because the starter on these is on the wrong* side, the donor engine and starter needed a bit of modifying. I got it wrong the first time, and didn't check my work before fitting. Removal is a bastard, leaving it in a corner was much easier.

IMG_1096.JPG.9b366411d17dfe99da1a76562fad84bf.JPG

Last, and the most far gone, is my beloved Insight. After years of faithful service and happy memories, I crashed it into the car in front of me. People ask silly money for replacement parts, so it's sat aside until a breaker comes up at the right time.

IMG_2260.JPG.f212236c93dd60c07dde2753d76c9294.JPG

So, yeah. Failed to meet my goal of getting things thinned down this year. See you again next year, when this list will definitely* be smaller!

What an eclectic collection!

Still fancy that Celica...

Quiet year really. Probably one car too many up here at the moment but (IF IT EVER STOPS FECKIN' RAINING) then the @calebaaront C220 will get some TLC* and, if sprog likes it, be swapped for the FreeLander which will then be surplus -that has an MOT due in Feb too .....

*100% confirmed as engine mounts - quite as a church mouse if you jack the engine up off the mounts when it's running - got the parts, just need the inclination and some nice weather

A year of unintentional and fairly unsuccessful buying for me. Not in chronological order:

IN:

BMW 330i Touring

20250408_215711.jpg.5aab7fde13cde29e50fb886fec3c59f9.jpg

Soulless and thirsty, it doesn't entertain me. Was meant to be a short termer, but seems to have become a long termer for reasons further down the post. However it's been fairly dependable in the 9 months I've had it so I guess I can't complain too much.

MG ZT-T 190

20251205_122537.jpg.cebc742692e001159d56bb680a94f740.jpg

Bought on a whim last week purely out of boredom and because I liked the colour. Nice car, but I can't keep it so it'll be OUT promptly in the new year.

Triumph Street Triple 675

20250806_212037.jpg.7f7ea97677153e1f4bbd9dcecce0b330.jpg

Always liked these, and found it locally for a reasonable price. My first bike so I'll probably do something stupid on it and hurt myself. Doesn't start very well, due an expensive major service, and seems to have a charging fault. So much for the "reasonable price". I'm shit at this.

IN/OUT:

Ford Fiesta ST150

20250315_111640.jpg.7c603d188d7e59a6c4bcf6bcec1e03a0.jpg

This was a proper short-termer due to, again, reasons below. Bought in an emergency in January, I wanted something that wasn't totally dismal but was also cheap. Put in a search for an ST150 on Facebook, sorted by cheapest, made sure it had an MOT, bought it the next day for £1650.

Put some suspension on it and a pair of tyres, then sold it for £1900 in April after a few thousand miles, so not a dreadful loss. Was fun, but I always felt it was down on power.

NON-MOVERS:

Jaguar XF 3.0d

20241231_161348.jpg.432c51774900c7ad51d36e43a6069d46.jpg

A non mover in the most literal sense. It broke down on New Years Eve, got dragged to a garage, and that's the last I heard of it. It will not have turned a wheel under its own power in 2025. Hopefully I'll get it back early next year so it can be sold, even though I'll lose about half what I paid on it. Never mind.

In summary - Four bought, one sold, one dead. Total fleet is 4, over a target of 2. Lot of selling to do next year, hoping for a bit more fleet stability.

Shame you aren't keeping the ZT, didn't Schaefft do a peen of work on it? Im supposed to be not using my 75 over winter but while its just rain up here and no salt, like a good book, I can't put it down. Its such a great comfortable all-rounder. Plus it's the only one of my cars that's watertight, has a working radio and heated seats, all together!

It might grow on you?

It's really lovely, but I can't daily a car that thirsty, and I can't have 3 cars on the fleet. I'm glad I've bought it as I'm really enjoying driving it, but with my sensible hat on, it's got to be the BMW that stays for now - the Jag and ZT will both need to go. To be fair, the ZT probably deserves going to someone who will look after it better than me. The target is still to replace the BM as well, but I'm still not sure what with. One car and one bike, that's all I can sustain at the moment.

A fair plan indeed, the KV6 does like a drink or two!
