if you can prep it yourself chances are you could paint it too,,,the hardest bit is good prep

dont read too much into what you see on dealer wheelers , its all made up and so are the prices...take a diy prep'd job to any decent painter they will laugh at it and charge you more to put it right , and any future issues will all be cus of your prep guv

you will find everyone you speak to is a painting expert and has some tale of how thier mate 1500'd down the car and gave it 27 coats of paint and how it won shows , all experts until its time to pick up the gun

Posted

It’s the cost of removing bits like the wing mirrors, degreasing the thing to remove any silicates, repairing any damage like parking knocks, flatting it back all over properly, masking it all up. All this is before you’ve picked up the gun. Once you think about it you can see why it’s so expensive. It’s also no guarantee it won’t break out in scabs in 18 months time. Whatever anyone tells you the paint finish never lasts like the factory paint either.

I’d also want to see some examples of their previous work as well.

Couple of questions, easy one first, anyone got an autoaid discount code? Second Citroen Eloys fluid low warning, does anyone know approx how many squirts are left after the warning comes on?

Agreed that a paint job will be around £3000 upwards for something of good quality.

This is why the 4 door Tolly is getting rattle canned.  Sad but true.

My 1992 AX came with a Blaupunkt Boston fitted, but no code.

Is there any way to get a code except paying a company when I don't know if it works or not?

The excitement is too much so have washed and dressed to go out side to give it a try!

6:28 am - 3 bars on continually, I will now wait 2 hours to see if it resets.

9:30 am - Radio code now excepted but not a sound. It could be because our forum AX expert has removed both speakers but I thought it was only one. This is pending the delivery of a pair of brand new speakers ordered Tuesday. Or it could be the set is buggered and why nobody bothered with the code.

BIzarrely I quite fancy a LHD pug.

Fuck knows.

Anyway, there's one here: https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1038369.  If it's not been brought in to import, but has a CG, does it need to leave again before it can get a NOVA?

No it doesn't need to leave again. If you buy it, it arrived last week*.

Yes the tuning now works and gives me know stations but no sound. The new speakers turned up today so I hope to get them fitted over the weekend.

What size speakers are needed. I have some new 13cm ones I'll donate and could bring down on Sunday

They are indeed 13cm, but I have some new ones now ready to fit thanks. Maybe I should call it a priority and get them done today!

New speakers fitted and silence!

We have slung in an old Sony head unit I had laying about and beautiful music!

Conclusion is the Blaupunk Boston is broken.

Thanks for your help checking it out.

Sorry but back to the weather strip question, are all 3 door Metro's weather strips the same? ie Austin Metro, MG Metro, Mk1, Mk2, Rover Metro, Rover 100.

Mine is a 1984 MG Mk1, newly painted with buggered weather strips.

Buying a shit car with a 'lost' V5.  Any specific precautions?

I believe it involves a new keepers slip with a postcode north of the border

How does one apply to join the SVM?

I don't think you can apply.
They are quite selective, and if you fulfil the criteria then they might approach you ;)

I believe owning several rwd Volvo and living north of the border are pre-requisites.

Well, it appears we'll be moving northwards soon and I'll be bringing a 740 and 164 with me

Personally I wouldn't, but I'm very risk averse. If you are thinking of it, some of the obvious would be if the seller has any paperwork at all to go with the car (old receipts preferably with their name and address, mots, etc) How long do they claim to have owned it, is it worth enough to Hpi?

Whatever happened about that MINI on here where someone came out of the woodwork to claim it had been sold without consent?

Posted

That was with a V5..

Last owner had it 6 years.  He had loads of history and old v5cs

Any Shitters familiar with France able to advise where to buy eloys fluid from and is it worth it over buying in the UK?

As long as you’re sure the person selling it has legal title you’re fine - apart from the fact the tax rules make it a PITA because you can’t tax it and when you finally get a V62 processed you get told off for not having tax.

Yeah, we've just had that in the 305.  JohnK didn't have the v5 back yet, and I may have been caught speeding..

Yes hpi if you are worried about it being written off.....I think they still print on the front of the logbook that the car has been "substantially repaired" - they may have reworded the official bump.

When a car pops up on ebay with a 'lost' logbook it does send the alarm bells off....a quick reg to 83600 (which costs £3) helps....

All good advice far too late, ta :)

They only print that on the logbook for C (now S) not D/N.

Always worth a check, so a good shout.
