I did a buy today, for the first time since February.  I swapped the Sonata and a bit of cash for this.

Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but it's a nice enough thing to drive (although it has a knock on the front over bumps which sounds like drop links) and it has a towbar so could be good for dragging the Merc if I need to trailer that somewhere.  It's an auto so nice and easy to drive.

I've not got a huge amount done on the fleet this weekend.  I was going to refit the carb to the Spacy and see if I could get that running, but the fuel tap appears to have packed up so I'm going to have to order another one of those before work can progress.  I also really need to sort the oil leak from the bottom of the engine - the proper way to do that would be to take the crankcase apart and fit new gaskets, but that would involve undoing bolts that screw into 36-year-old Japanese alloy, so probably not a good idea.  Annoyingly the engine on the spares bike is completely oil tight, but I really don't think I can be arsed to swap them over and I've never heard the spare engine run, so it might be knackered in other ways.

I got the Renault 6 up on the ramps again and chopped out the rotten piece of floorpan.  I've made up a temporary plate to cover the hole for now to stop the moisture getting to the inner floor, but it'll need welding up at some point.  While the car was up in the air I had a look at the gearbox mount - it is indeed quite tired.  It is also unfortunately not the same as either a late 6 or an 845cc car - it seems to be a design that is unique to the very early 1108cc cars and I've not been able to find one anywhere so far.  I might find myself in a similar situation to Junkman with his 16 in that cars of this spec were made for such a short period that bits simply don't exist for them.  That would be a pain in the arse.

I thought I'd check the gearbox oil level while I was under there.  I had to remove the undertray in order to be able to see the gearbox - bloody moderns hiding their oily bits behind covers, you wouldn't get that with a Horsey Horseless.  The level is indeed low, in that when I removed the drain plug nothing came out, so I'm going to have to buy some gearbox oil in the week.  I also noticed that there is a reversing light switch on the gearbox, which is odd as the car has never had reversing lights - the switch didn't seem to do much though when I stuck a multimeter on it.

Other than that all I got done was clearing the V70 out in preparation for its impending MOT on Tuesday.  The garage have said that they can fit the part worn tyre I bought for the car (which is an almost new Michelin, so a lot better than the knackered Delinte currently on there).  I think the handbrake might need some attention, but other than that I'm hopeful it won't be too catastrophic...

Really rate those CRV. Fatha_touring has one. All its needed is servicing, brakes, an aux belt and the rear diff fluid changing.

Drives decently, and the 2.0 petrol goes well even with the auto.

Found a time warp yesterday, the Corsas original spare tyre. I've only looked at this about 3 or 4 times in the 10 years I've had the car. It's clearly never been used in the previous 10 years of its life prior to my ownership either. 

I thought it looked quite pretty. When I got the car for my wife in 2010 it had some very tatty Sxi alloys fitted but I think that if I bought a car like this now I would have it completely standard on 4 freshly repainted steels like this.

It even still had 10 Psi in it so I bastardised it with some 2020 air. Philistine.

I did a job that was successful, in that it was mostly an investigation and temporary fix, but it went well, no stress, no swearing, no feeling like it's all impossible, no seized anything.

Go me!

It was removing the door card and looking at the lock and window. Propping up the window, working out how to fix regulator, looking at why the door catch is, well, catchy.

I had a Mk1 CR-V years ago and really enjoyed it, mine was a manual and excessively thirsty for a 2.0 petrol but a nice thing to drive otherwise, I always felt it needed more torque as the revvy engine really didn't suit it very well but a tremendously useful vehicle and extremely reliable.

It used to be said that Citroen had a particularly Stalinist view of their own history, and apart from the Great GS Birotor Buyback (i.e. let's pretend the car never happened), there are stories of SM V6 engines being destroyed by chucking them out from a great height.

Holy shit, the Navara gave me a proper scare today. Coming into the town I work in there's a roundabout. When I went on the brakes as I was approaching the roundabout, the ABS went crazy and would engage even on very light pedal pressure. That meant the pedal would start kicking back immediatelly and I had pretty much no actual brakes. Good thing I wasn't going that fast anymore at that point and I managed to use engine braking to slow down enough to not just barge onto the roundabout. As I was coming off the roundabout the ABS light came on and the system disconnected, which meant I now had brakes again.

Thinking about it, I'm really really glad the failure didn't happen just 1 braking attempt earlier, because if it had I would have likely overshot a motorway exit ramp where I was having to slow down from 140 kph to around 60. Terrifying.

The V70 has failed its MOT, but only on the driver's seatbelt.  I'll take that - bloody thing has fought me all the way but it's a secondhand belt away from being legal again, finally.

It’s actually a sort of spring screwed to the undercarriage - I think it’s to support the exhaust. I’ve deleted it!

Is it part of the connection for the brake load adjusting valve?  My Kangoo has something similar.

Done a collection today.

2 litre pez auto flavour, which is a Xantia combo I've been meaning to try for a while.  I did actually need something else too for a variety of reasons, which adds a certain pressure to the situation.  But thankfully it's turned out to be a bloody nice car.

Deceased giffer owner who spent £980 on it last year, and £1,400 in 2018, so he clearly loved it.  Shame it's in doom blue mind, but you can't have everything.

It's the first time I've used the trains since March, and it involved a trip through central London.  Gave me palpatations for the first leg as it was too much like my old commute, but otherwise it was alright.  The general public were irritating, but no change there!
