What was your girlfriend/boyfriends vehicle when you first met them?

Parents of a former girlfriend I was seeing upgraded from a mark 2 Cavalier to a beige mark 3 one (L or base) . This was 1995. We split up w before she turned 17 years old and very much in the "friend zone". Her parents bought her a mark 1 VW Polo. It was sitting outside her house for a few days before her birthday but she assumed it was someone else's until her parents gave her the keys.

Next girlfriend was 17-18 and was learning to drive. I think she passed her driving test in late 1997. Remember her picking me up on Saturday evening from my part time retail job. She had access to her dad's silver Renault 5 Campus. That relationship fizzled out after she left 6th form and was looking to go to Uni. During the summer of 1998 she took a temp job at Cromer Crabs and hooked up with a Bad Boy working there. Curse my being a Beta Male. :(

Next girlfriend was 19/20 but didn't drive. The one after her was 20/21 but only lasted a few weeks when she broke it off. She drove a J reg Fiat Tipo 1.6 which was nicer than the knackered Tempra I had. This was 2000.

Never bothered much with relationships after that.

Back in 1981 the first girlfriend I had that had a car owned a Mk1 Escort GT. It was a very nice clean 12 year old car in dark red. She went to work one day and it got nicked out of the multi-storey never to be seen again.

The current partner, of almost 30 years, did not have a car. I found her a Mk2 VW Jetta to learn to drive and after passing her test I got her a nice Mk2 Golf Driver.

The current Mrs Martc had a mk1 FIAT Uno, bASe model in solid black, formerly owned by some hire car company and originally registered in that London. It never missed a beat. At the time I had a Lada Samara.

Talking of which the previous girlfriend had a dark brown Lada 1800 with vinyl roof.

Loving the stories on this thread. Some of you have partner shiters and some not.

The late Mrs_Boom had a 1989 Corolla in white when we met. Although she had given it to her previous husband when she split with him. It was more use to him than her as she worked in That London and was terrified of driving. She had a (very minor) bump in said Corolla a few years before while putting a cassette into the tape player. She never drove again.

To coax her back into a car, I bought her a 2004 New Beetle which she never drove either (my neighbour has it now).

Odd how fear can overtake and rule someone.

The Corolla was a nice steer (I borrowed it  when the ex husband went into hospital for a bit) although it had been owned by a Chinese takeaway before, and the interior stank of fish! (Well, that was the reason I was for told for the smell anyway). :)

Eventually it became too frilly, and had some sort of air blockage making it run silly rich. It got carted round to the local garage who practically folded it up and had it ready for cubing in about 30 minutes. The Mrs was furious, glad I wasn’t to blame for that one!

Last lass I was with had a bright yellow base model Ka when I met her, and a mk1 MX5 when it ended. Her minimum speed everywhere was 40 and I’d seen three figures in the Ka, it was entertaining* when she drove.

First proper girlfriend had a pre-facelift Nova GTE (I think, certainly a sporting one) it was silver with brown tartan seats this would have been back in 1999/2000 so they weren't so rare back then.

A few years later another girlfriend had a pre-facelift Skoda Felicia in black. It was nicknamed Curly as the number plate was P***UBE, sadly it was written off crashing into a taxi after we had been to Meadowhall for the day 😞

Although current GF can't drive before I met her I had a fling with a lady who owned a Fiat Stilo.

Maintaining a workable erection knowing that she'd just paid £2500 for the Fiat was somewhat of a challenge.

🤣 Until you mentioned it I forgot that car even existed.

Hers: Ovlov 340 4 door saloon
His   : Ovlov 340 2 door hatch

Both cars were (entirely by coincidence) stopgaps.
Both cars were true shitemobiles and were independently bridged within our first year together.
He got a V8 RR with mild HGF which became hers after the 340 died.
He then dailied his 34 year old LR until the chassis finally crumbled.

Some on here would struggle to keep it down at the thought of a Fiat Tipo for £2500!

First girlfriend had a P reg Peugeot 106 in Alpine White. At the time I had a P reg Peugeot 306 in Alpine White. Many amusing photos of the two cars "little n large" were taken.

Second girlfriend had a Daewoo Matiz with a massive dent in the offside rear door. I found a matching door in a scrappy for £15 and swapped it over in about half an hour, improving the appearance of the car by an order of magnitude and also her gratitude towards me.

I then dated a couple of women who didn't drive / didn't have cars, then about 8 years ago I must have become as attractive as a dose of ebola overnight as I've been single since! Ah well.

My girlfriend back in 2002 (now wife) when we were both 21 had a 1998 Fiat Punto, base spec, 5 door. 1.1, in flat red with grey plastic bumpers. Cracking little car.

I must have liked girls with poverty spec faded red cars, my girlfriend previous to the wife had a mk3 Ford fiesta, 5 door, base spec, 1.3 in flat red with grey plastic bumpers 😂

One of my girl mates (who I shagged for a bit before we entered the friend zone - hee hee!) had one of those 1.1 Puntos - it was really quite rapid and rent as you’d expect an Italian hatch to be - brilliant car.

I’ll  never forget the time we walked out of my flat one morning, over to the Punto, unlocked it and got in - only to find the key wouldn’t turn in the ignition. We were still a little groggy from a lively night out and it took a while looking around inside before an uneasy feeling descended upon us….. then the penny dropped - we were in the wrong car!

After seeing @DaveDorson's for sale thread for his mate's Corolla saloon, I've been reminiscing on Mrs L's car when we met. She owned a G plate Corolla Executive hatchback which had been owned by a little old dear for many years. Then it was traded in at a local garage where she lived in Somerset and she picked it up for £250. It would have been 13 years old when she bought it!

The Rolla's bodywork was still immaculate when I met Mrs L but I quickly discovered she'd run the engine pretty much dry of oil. Despite my efforts to refill it and keep a close eye, it only lasted another six months unfortunately. Still a bit gutted about that one - it was super clean even then.

Mrs W shared a Fiesta popular plus, C416PAN, with her sister when we started going out 33 years ago. I say shared but neither of them ever drove it. Myself and her sister’s then BF were the only ones to use it, as they were too scared to drive and the road users of the time should be grateful! No idea how they passed. I fixed this by taking them out in an automatic. Cured Mrs W and she’s now pretty competent, in an auto but her sister still only drives within 5 mile radius, also in an automatic. Got their mum on the road too, in an auto, as their dad never drove. Not so sure that was a good thing😬

I don't think most girls I dated in the past actually owned a car, or even had their license. One had a Nissan Note she received from her dad who was MOT tester that I drove a few times until it was replaced by an Xtrail I think.

My gf got a new Fiat 500 from new in 2016 which she still drives, close to 70k miles now. It almost grenaded its engine recently after losing most of its oil because the oil pan rusted out, typical Fiat quality. I attempted to get her into an E38 7-Series but that happened to be during the height of petrol prices a few years ago and she quickly wanted to get rid of it after seeing how much it was to fill the tank (completely ignoring the fact that the tank is probably twice as large). Maybe in a few years when the framerails have rotted out or something else breaks catastrophically.

My wife's first car was an Austin 1300 when she started learning to drive in the late '90's  Gifted to her by her grandad who had kept it in the garage for her for years.  Sadly its next MOT was the death of it, much welding & other work needed saw it scrapped, then life got in the way and she didn't end up passing her test until we got married 10 years later (then we got her a Citroen C3)

Growing up we had an Austin 1100. No seatbelts in the back and very slow, but a nice little car. That was kind of her grandad

My wife had a dark blue 1.1 2 door mk1 escort and it wasn't even rusty, (this would have been mid 80's)  hopelessly slow though,  getting burnt up by a JCB was the last straw, sold it for £100 and bought a 1.3 mk2 estate which was a great car.

Management had a W plate Fiat Brava when we got together in 2008. It was gone by early 2010, replaced by a Honda CR-V mk2.

My missus loved (but never owned) scooters, I hated them and had motorbikes. She was pillion for years on the bikes and never complained. Later in life when I got a scooter she refused to go on the back!

We have got all this way without a single mention of ATCNBE!

When I first met my Mrs. she had a facelift AX but by the time we got together she had a year old 206 which she bought new.

*Checks out of the window*

Yep, it's still there 17ish years later.

Mrs GMcD was driving a silver Corsa C with the 1 litre chain rattler.

Actually she gave me a lift home in it the first time I met her (at a house party) as I'd been drinking.  Complete change of roles ever since.

Reading this thread seems to show many of us prefer old snotters to young wenches ....

Quite old, high mileage, lots of previous owners, drinks too much, blows loudly from the back and the neighbours and your friends keep saying to get a newer better one.

ATCNBE
