Absolutely standard practice. Passport should be sufficient. When I ran my own business, I even needed to keep records of my right to work in the UK too.

Louise, it is easy to say but don’t worry. The work they did was substandard. Attempts to resolve the issue have been unsuccessful. Other people who have had similar work done have not had the issues you have had which are the results of poor workmanship and nothing to do with you.

If their work was superlative, came in under budget and they gave you a bunch of flowers upon completion, then you should worry about losing. But as far as I know from your descriptions they made a hash of it from start to finish and have left you out of pocket with sub standard work. Not only does that have a negative influence on your life but affects the value and integrity of your home and that isn’t something you would pay for. Or be expected to put up with.

They have had chances to resolve matters and they haven’t done so. They will have to explain why they haven’t resolved the problem, and if they want to insist their work was perfectly OK I am sure you have lots of photographic evidence to show the judge the work was anything but OK.

Tell them you are from Ibiza, France, or New Zealand and they might deport you there. Silver linings and all that!

They've probably had an "Oh shit" moment and realised they should have done this ages ago. I gave my Passport when I joined where I work at the moment, but they needed it again when we had our last audit as it wasn't quite documented correctly.

Really?  Employers now have to check the right to work for all employees?  Isn't an NI number enough?

It seems like there is a creeping culture of questioning and checking everything in the UK.  I read somewhere, possibly on here, about someone's company asking to see proof of their car insurance details which I'm sure never use to happen.

Why is the onus suddenly on the individual to prove everything?  Surely it should be the other way around i.e. if there is an issue then immigration has to prove that you don't have a right to work?

That sounds like quite a story!

I'm sure all prospective barristers will be looking up Dick Head  Vs New POD (20??) in "test cases that never were" .

I pulled out of our estate and followed his car out of the 30 Mph zone and into the countryside NSL - Him in a 4wd Xtype and me in a mk3 astra 1.4 8V at about 7:15 am.  Once into the NSL he was travelling at about 45 mph, but there was nowhere safe to overtake. We came into a Hamlet which was 40 mph and he slowed to about 35 mph.

I planned my overtake, to start just as we went into the NSL.  where there is at least  3/4 mile straight, before a bend where the flat road is higher than the fields and hedge.  As I drew up alongside him he started to keep pace with me, but to be honest he could have gone faster and made me look stupid. No. He decided to keep exactly level, as my speed increased to erm NSL plus. As we came towards the bend I could see that there was no body on the next straight, so I decided to do all my braking on the wrong side of the road and take the bend in that lane.

He obviously Bottled it at that point and backed off and I ended up in front of him heading down the next straight. Now i'd also seen that there was a horse box being towed by a pick up and I knew it was now hidden by the Hedge on the next bend, and that I'd probably meet cars coming the other way, so I took the next bend at 60 mph, but got ready to hit the brakes hard. As I came around the bend on to the next straight, I saw in the distance a car coming towards us, but plenty of room for me to overtake the horse box. Dick head was forced to slow and wait to overtake.

Coming up to the next bend there was actually a series of bends past a stud farm on one side and a farm on the other, with signs for businesses such as bespoke furniture and turkeys and  aspragus etc.  There also 4 slower moving cars, because one was turning into a farm entrance.  This was a short straight with 3 farm entrances and a bend with 3 more farm entrances. (I once came around there to find a very sick horse lying head first through the front screen of a fiesta. (Horse Died, Driver only shocked. Lucky no passenger)

As the front car turned in all the cars were virtually stopped. Max 5 mph.  I stopped, and let them pull away and then started pulling away.  There was a bit of hesitation there from me, to be honest. I wanted Dickhead to wait a few seconds, but then I fucking floored it, to catch them. Dickhead attempted an overtake. I kept my foot on the accelerator, until he started to turn in. I probably had my foot on the brake by the time I hit him, but he was already braking because Oh my fucking god a bend and car coming. So my front wing hit the rear wing of his jag.  My Astra needed a new bumper and wing and the wheel repainting. And his had the smallest dent which the insurance company claimed had cost £1600 to repair.

The Judge heard all this, so he knew that neither of us was exactly perfect, but he decided that as Dickhead had by his own admission made my first overtake impossible, and had indeed overtaken on a short straight with 6 entrances, which was very silly, whereas I (a family man, Chartered engineer etc) should probably just have it go when dickhead first started being a cock. And therefore on the balance of probabilities I probably didn't swerve at dickhead in rage.

His insurance company decided to go to the small claims court, and we therefore also had 2 solicitors provided by the insurers, who did absolutely FUCK all. Mine hadn't read any of the paperwork and didn't have the photos I'd provided.  I'm pretty sure that the judge ruled in my favour because I had taken the trouble to bring a copy of those photos, which made it obvious how stupid overtaking there was, and couldn't care less whether I'd rammed the dickhead on purpose or not (- NOT !!!!)

It's a good job none of my employers ever asked me to provide a passport as I have only got one (and still not used it) since I've retired.

But to add my grump, I can't decide whether to buy another car, I'm still waiting to get my Land Rover back and bumbling about in a hire car, normally I'd just go and buy a stop-gap. I keep talking myself out of it, usually I'd either buy something cheap that is throwawayable or something safe that I should get my money back on. I looked at six cars locally at the weekend and didn't buy one. I tend to repeat myself, as I then know what to expect, so looked at three MX5s one MINI Cooper and a Mercedes Coupe/hatch thing. All of them seemed decent enough, but I failed to make a decision. I'm not sure when I became indecisive.

Just bought a Villiers powered generator from eBay. It's located in Ware, so nice and easy to get to. The seller is zero rated (yes, I know, we all have to start somewhere). I've sent several messages asking for a convenient date and time to collect, I've even sent my mobile number. He keeps asking when I am going to turn up and pay. Read your fucking messages FFS. Why are things so difficult? I've just sent a polite message suggesting that he might not have seen my earlier responses and if he would send me his contact number I would happily contact him and make the suitable arrangements.

Then eBay sends me a message saying that I need to pay within 2 days otherwise I might have an unpaid case opened up. Oh really? EBay, this is not a good time to piss me off. Again.

So I maintain the digital archive of all our DVDs, Blu-rays etc.

Just transcoding some we recently bought to throw on the network, and have been waiting about 15 minutes to get to the point I can start this one going...

WHAT POSSIBLE REASON can there be for setting the disc structure up in such a way that there are more than 400 titles on the blasted thing?!?

Usually this is a case of click "scan" wait 30 seconds, double check settings, type in the metadata, click "go" then ignore it for a few hours. The tendency for a Blu-ray to have stupid disc structures makes that first bit annoyingly slow...

Yeah, I know...First World Problems...

I've been retired 17 years. Ten years before that we were asked about car insurance.

People used to nip here and there locally in their own car on works buisiness.

One guy had a bump, broke both his legs. Fortunately he remembered* he wasn't at work that day.

They upgraded our insurance to cover such an event in the future

Cost of houses etc in Oban, still thinking of applying for that job but not sure I could afford to move.

I'd rather be further south but it's a lot closer to where I want to be than here.

My Land Rover is ill, it has been with the garage for nearly a month now with what at first seemed to be just a faulty condenser. It was running again but was diagnosed that it had a rattly timing chain and probably a leaky valve. The head has now been taken off and I'm advised that it is losing oil into the sump when poured in the bores, losing it fast on number 2 cylinder slower on 1 and three, only holding on number 4.

It looks like I need to either:

Slap it back together and run on a dodgy engine.

Swap the engine for a second hand unknown TDI

Swap the engine for an unknown second hand petrol

Have my engine rebuilt.

Buy an exchange engine

Or buy one of the very few brand new short engines still out there.

I'm only looking at the last three options, I really want to keep it long term, but these options are going to be somewhere between £1500 and £2500. Luckily I can afford it as I'm working at the moment, but I'm just a bit pissed off as it's taken a month to get to this point, so no doubt even if I decide tomorrow, it's going to be another couple of weeks before I get it back.

So arsenugget cunt hit the saab at work today. Not sure how they pulled the left front corner or the body about 1" out from the wheel arch to under the headlight without marking the paint but they did. Lip spoiler was half off and the fog light snapped a mount.

Just got in off the drive and it's all back together as it should be ready for shite fest. So that's a result, I can start pa king now...

Fucking hate cunts who do that and just drive off though..

I'll probably do that anyway, if I can ever decide what to buy, but I really want my Land Rover back.

Personally, I would (and did) send any correspondence to the other party signed for - they can't claim it wasn't received then. If they don't collect from the post depot, that's not your problem - you followed procedure and sent documentation as instructed, which of course you can then prove if requested with the receipt and tracking info.Address wise. I'd ignore the address on companies house and use whichever address it is the court has registered.Assuming this is the bathroom saga, remember to document as much of the events prior to starting court action as you can - dates of phone calls (and anything you can remember from them), date and copies letters sent, copies of inspections by a 3rd party, all that sort of thing. Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but that sort of thing becomes harder and harder to do as weeks pass, so best doing it sooner rather than later. If you do that and it's all as you described on here, I really can't see how the court will do anything but find in your favour :)

My companies registered address is our accountants. But it’s not the trading address, but I’ve no idea why there’s a third one you mention. Good luck!

I finish an HNC in a fortnight and have to write a program in C#.

The sum total of the teaching I've had on this is how to write two loops and weeks of the tutor going on the wildest tangents and talking about his personal life to the point I gave up turning up to the lectures weeks ago because it's literally a waste of three hours of my life.

This is compounded by the world's most inept builder finishing my new house SEVEN MONTHS late and me having to sleep where I can since December.

I finally got the keys last week so somehow have to move all my shit in, lay flooring, and learn C# in the next week or so.

I have absolutely no interest in programming which doesn't help. Fuck programming, it's boring, tedious shit.

Does anyone know what happens if you fail an HNC unit? My college literally will not tell me, despite being asked outright many times. Annoyingly I have got distinction in the other units, hence being awake at 3am stressing over potentially pissing 8 grand and a shitload of time up the wall.

I made the mistake of driving to Durham on the M6 - A66 via the A605 , didn't know appleby horse fair was on ,the road between Kirkby Stephen and the A66 for the whole length had caravans and horses on it , what should have taken 3-4 minutes took over 30 because they were trotting the horses at 10mph with their usual couldn't give a fuck attitude.
