The grumpy thread

No, I think dave's having a moan about the open forum. Or rather a topic in it.

Which Dave?

I know what I'm objecting to - and I'll challenge it every time I see it, here or elsewhere.

no, I am talking about the entire fucking forum and the dross its full of.

Its like your favourite pub. You go there a lot, you know the regulars and the regulars know you. Shared interests and common outlooks on life mean easy conversations flow on all manner of topics. Its comfy.

But it changes. There is no one event that causes it, and its not a sudden thing - its a slow, creeping and unstoppable change. One day you look around the bar and realise that the people you are interested in listening to, the people you can be bothered conversing with have reduced in number, with the old faces not showing up as often as they used to. Those that are left are slowly drowned out by aggressively arrogant arseholes, smug "better than you" cunts and tedious facebook wankers.

You catch sight of yourself in the mirror behind the optics and see that you have changed too....times change and people move on.

So you down the last of your pint, place your glass in the bar and walk out the door. You might look in from time to time in the future to see if things go back to the way they were, but you dont hold out much hope.

This is me finishing my pint.

See ya.

Not you. Dave numbers.

All I wanted to do was have a sensible discussion on capital punishment. If the odd member spits their dummy then so what? It's the Internet not real life.

Posted

I never understood why more people don't just ignore threads they don't like instead of deliberately reading them & becoming angry.

I fail to see the point of most of that section. This is a car forum not a sodding Facebook substitute.

We haven't had a flounce for a while.  A pity it was a 'net contributor'.

FFS. What really is the point of flouncing off? Especially in response to a discussion in a section that is so easily ignored. Personally, I think that section should either be entirely canned, or start having certain topics banned. Last thing we need is more reasons to fall out with each other.

I don't think the open forum should weighed in... the vast majority of threads in there are not contentious, and can provide something to read when you've read all the main forum threads that are interesting. There are also a lot of cross-over topics in there that are of interest to shiters too, such as DIY threads, tool reviews or other non-automotive machinery.

And if the off-topic area was binned those sort of threads - if not banned outright, which opens up an entirely new can of worms - would just cause car threads to drop off the main page more quickly.

But with such a large cross section of membership, many trusted members will have a huge knowledge base to tap. Eg plumbing, electrics or computers. I’ve been able to tap into this many times saving me lots of money. I do ignore politics and religion though, it’ll end in tears!

Edit, plus vacuums, gardening, painting, bikes, technology, phones.

In my how much shite is too much thread I mentioned the super reliable* P38 that broke every time I used it. Always gets me home (so far) but has to be fixed before using it again. Today I did a 55 mile run each way to the classic car auction, delivering an old caravan at the same time, so as usual it had the Ifor Williams on the back. Door catch froze in the open position, so had to boil a kettle so was late leaving. Ran perfectly on the way down. On starting to come home, it illuminates EAS fault and the rear suspension drops to the bump stops, front suspension goes into high mode. Of course my box of electric trickery is 55 miles away. Made it home with most of my teeth intact, but tomorrow I will have to reset it all again, the EAS gets confused every couple of months and needs resetting after which it is fine for another couple of months.

FFS this modern shite is starting to get to me!

Ok, don't kill off that section but perhaps consider not having it as completely open. Clearly some topics just split opinion too strongly. It's ridiculous that we lose members over non-car stuff.

Posted

Or maybe just let people be adults and if they see something that they disagree with then understand that everybody is entitled to have a different opinion?

Had to get a new stop solenoid 3 weeks ago. How long did it last ? A bloody week !!

Dave numbers going green puts me in a grump.

If you're still reading Dave, don't give up on the majority of us.

I for one thoroughly enjoy your contributions.

Take a break for a bit, but do please return.

yeah Davenumbers was an interesting poster

I wondered why he was Green. Is that a traffic light warning?

It seems to be people that have left of their own accord but not been banned (a bit like how the old watanabe account shows up as 'guest_*_' or something which is presumably a relic of old board software). EssDeeWon has gone green too but did it on the quiet.

I think it's when you delete your account somehow.

Green means email needs validating. So is email is deleted I suppose to avoid getting messages or alerts.

You’re green too! Albeit not the same shade :-)

I like the open section, there's such a cross section of topics in there, I mean how many other forums would you find internet dating tips, how to become a slum landlord and fun with firearms ( to name but a few) on the same page?

I can understand people getting worked up over things but I thought by and large in the most recent politics or what's wrong with politics thread it was all refreshingly civil with little name calling or personal stuff.

To be honest it was all going along quite civilly in the death penalty thread too, until Dave came along calling us all deranged psychos and lunatics.

I actually had to wear a coat today.

It was most disconcerting. I usually just have my winter and summer T shirts. Anything additional is just fucking weird.

Fuck them, if someone wants a flounce let them, its hardly the end of the world

Currently on hold to the old bill as someone has nicked the number plates off the Golf.  Or at least they've nicked the front and most of the back.  Don't know if it's just petty vandalism or something more nefarious, but think I'd better report it to be on the safe side.  Just what I needed.
