The grumpy thread

Right yeah, because complaining in the thread about complaints (in a thread started to specifically house complaints) is clogging the main board up - unlike the reams of tedious drivel which clog the main areas up.Remember, if you get sick of all the crap, you're 'flouncing off.'

Jon, you seem like a nice chap, have had dealings with you previously, and you ARE a nice chap.. But complaining about the content and quality of the posts on here is not really contributory IMHO. Yes, some posts are trivial/tripe/rubbish but hey, such is life. Over all this is one of the best forums on the internet. Without fail, any dealings I have had with folks on here have been positive. I have met some of the finest folk in the world on here. You stoppped being Watanabe to become Dugong for a reason I guess..... Not being hostile by the way... Just saying...

Christ yes, this a broad church, lets be honest half of us are borderline bloody bonkers, the other half completely gaga.

Some of us spend and have spent fortunes on cars that maybe deserved it maybe didn't.

Some run almost exotic and stupidly wallet draining real cars that would put the fear of God up most, but our heroes here just go and do it.

Some run any old bloody cheap chod that keeps going.

Some change cars more often than i do me socks.

Some are cantakerous buggers whom would argue the world is flat.

We all like different aspects of owning older cars, some things we agree on some we don't, we all get teased now and again about our chod, either its not old enough or it's been too well cared for, and Heaven forbid someone actually restores a car or they'll never hear the end of it.

Long may at all continue.

However all moderns are shit.

Fact.  As time wears on I read less of this forum, nothing at all in the daily press and nothing in the motoring press.

I watch no TV and listen to no radio.

None of this is necessarily a reflection on TV presenters, forum members or journalists, its just me finding the world progressively harder to live with.

I have found an excellent bubble in which to live and that's where I stay - and I have to say its a very vibrant place, I find new music almost every week, make new friends on a monthly basis and generally have a good time.

I used to moan about how shit everything was and made myself pretty miserable as well as a couple of wives, a few girlfriends and more than a mate or two.

And in case you are wondering, there are no drugs involved, just plenty of alcohol and good old rock and roll.

Finding the world progressively harder to live with is a great description of how I feel just lately. Every time I switch on the TV, open a news website, browse FB etc it's another story about someone being mugged, raped, assaulted, having their car stolen, murdering each other up over whose God is best, spreading hate, division, fear. And I just think to myself, am I actually now in the minority of people who just want to go out and earn an average living so I can live my average life doing average things

Would give anything to be able to live in a cunt-free zone. I don't think it's too much to ask

Yes, I have been doing. Had a riot around Rockingham in my Piazza and did the Festival of The Unexceptional in it, but didn't think it would interest anyone on here so I bailed.

Been steadily selling stuff off waiting for the Amazon to come back.

Cleaned off the MGF, added more stuff to the 605 pile and slowly prepared the diesel 605 for sale. The Laguna plods on and will probably get another ticket without much mither.

I've also been spending a bit of time on the Norfolk coast clearing the barnet and will be going back there soon with non car mates.

SEE.

interesting shit

At the risk of adding to the crap, it is also interesting to look at the most viewed and most responded to posts

Right at the top are the ebay tat thread (Mk3?), the grumpy old man thread and the cars and girls thread, so specialist forum is probably right.

Fair enough Hirst/Dugong/and everyone else. I won't ask about Voaygers/MK1 Focii and PT cruisers any more.I CBA posting about my Allegeo and Minor as they're pretty slow moving projects. I'll keep myself to myself in future.

Post up some 'quality content' and it gets buried in tedious sub-literate guff after 30 seconds.

Or you can have unpaid EV PR (where differing views are VERBOTEN). I'm not sure what's worse.

I like the way tacitly there's an awareness of how crap the posts have become on here, though. At least that's something.

I think you've finally tipped me here: I know you in person and you're a truly great lad, but your incessant whining has got to me. Nobody replies to a for sale thread of your within 15 seconds and you're off on a rant. Nobody replied to a thread or post of yours and all of a sudden 'quality content is ignored'. I genuinely thought you might be interested in helping 'run' the Shite Auto page on social media but you just used it as a platform for a BFO rant, then left anyhow.

I tell you what kills this place more than new cars, more than bangernomics, more than someone not buying your car and more than 'crap posts' and that's people like you saying 'this place isn't hat it used to be, moan moan fucking moan'.

THAT is what is killing this place because it pisses people off, it royally pisses people off and that doesn't do anyone any favours. Sick to pissing death of it now, give it a rest.

All the moaning recently has made me hesitant about updating my threads.

The Locost may not be Autoshite but it's a car I've always wanted, it's far from perfect and I'm enjoying fettling/driving it.

The Freelander resurrection thread too I've let slide, it's not going to set hearts on fire but it has to be an Autoshite candidate doesn't it?

And my e46 330d isn't Autoshite, and is far from perfect. However it's a quick and economical way of hauling myself and bikes around the country so no apologies from me for owning a "modern".

The next person who moans should be banished to Pistonheads for a week or two, then they'll have something to moan about...

Posted

I don't bother updating on the Doloshites 'cause the progress is glacial at best and backwards at worse. The Civic is entirely devoid of interesting features.

Posted

Gents. May I remind you that this forum has a TALBOT RANCHO collection thread due any day now.

If that doesn't float your boat and stop the moaning then there is no hope.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree it is autoshite, locosts are usually built by someone who doesn't have the means to go out and buy a lotus 7, they are built out of tubing and old shite in someone's garage and can be maintained and rebuilt by the average person, what's not autoshite about that

Posted

Yep, I was about to make that point too....Exact descendant of the 50s Ford Special which was Autoshite before the term was invented.

There are also some great cars for sale on here at the minute, my lad has just bought one. Where else can you get honest cars and sellers in one place. There are even people willing to store or help deliver them for you. I am not looking to buy at the minute , I wish I was cos i would be spoilt for choice. Also if people have a problem they can share it and get support not ridiculed.

Back in England now and back to work tomorrow, but I'm worried as I'm short of £'s for work and I've got a bit of travelling to do. I thought I'd try to get an overdraft, but the idiots at my bank seem to forever have problems with thier website which makes internet banking almost impossible.

In the best Autoshite tradition I'm only here to read the 40 tonne BoatShite thread.

 (Mk3?),

I believe this harks back to a time in the board's infancy where there was a post limit on threads. Sort threads by views and the other two appear, albeit now mostly a hive of missing images and dead eBay links from the late 2000s.

Billy, I'll PM you when my computer is more than a random pile of shagged PCBs lying on my desk.
I didn't realise all the forum's problems were my doing.

My complaints were never aimed at you; this is also getting out of hand.

I hate the phrase "opinions are like arseholes - everyone's got one" but, crudity aside I can't think of a more concise way to say it. Just remember that your opinion isn't necessarily 100% binding and an opposing one 100% bang out of order.

Granted, Autoshite is now over 10 years old, so naturally there's bound to be members that come and go and a general attrition rate relating to that. What has also happened most significantly, is that the forum has become more popular. I joined in 2009 I think but was a lurker for at least a year before that, mostly because I was slightly fearful that I'd nothing to add to the forum, despite owning an Imp, AX GT, (replaced by a Sierra Sapphire) and a SAAB 9000 'modern'. Looking back, that self imposed banishment was stupid and I always consider my own actions more harshly than I do others' but perhaps a little consideration when starting a new thread or adding a potentially scathing comment etc wouldn't go amiss. Not because they're not wanted but simply because there's so much traffic here nowadays. A few years back, it wasn't unusual for there to be no comments of any sort for a couple of hours; at peak times, this is now down to a few seconds.

In an ideal world, Nigel would post up about his latest obscure European purchase/collection (his Estafette from the Isle of Man is an all time favourite thread), Hirst would enlighten us on his fleet (how's the Charmant doing?), Trigger would reinstate his spotted thread, Lankytim would post about his Allegro convertible and Meastro half van trailer (I'm probably very behind here) and Baz would let us know whatever happened to his Renault 20, amongst many others.

I carry on with my spotted thread regardless but I will make a slight appeal for readers to post comments, not because I'm vain but rather I like to add a worthy amount of content each post and therefore, pages get really bogged down with loads of photos, which probably puts people off, especially if they're viewing on their phones (I've only just been made aware of this notion, owning a Nokia with buttons).

Finally, sorry for wittering on and making a fifth paragraph but my suggestion would be to have another split in the forum: pre-2000 and post-2000. Why? It seems to be a bit of a natural turning point in car design and is nicely divisible; 20th Century and 21st Century. Quite how it would work, I've no idea, especially with bollox tat thread containing a 1982 Pony and Laguna IIs and Billy's buying of anything he bloody wants!  There's a danger that it'd be a slipper slope and we'd have numerous sub-forums but hopefully we could self moderate that before it became an issue. Plus, the Open Forum seems to be doing its job. Like I say, just my opinion, which is one of many opinions on here.

Posted

What i find most amusing is that if we was all standing face to face in some damp field somewhere surround by shit cars talking about this we would probably all agree with what each other had to say then someone will say it's all Triggers fault, everyone will laugh and then move on to a discussion about who had the best beard on Top Gear, Chris Goffey or Sue Baker.

Posted

I've been on here for close to 10 years now, and we've had the "Autoshite isn't as good as it used to be" bollocks more than once before. I'll say what I always do - everyone post whatever you find interesting, regardless of the moaners. If anyone has stopped posting in protest, stop kidding yourself - nobody cares.

Posted

As for quality content going ignored, quite often I enjoy reading updates on posts but don't necessarily have anything of value to add. So I realise this can be disheartening for people (getting no replies in general not just getting no replies from me) but the alternative is threads get full of "gr8 job m8" "nice1" and other general back slapping

Can be difficult to build momentum in a thread about your car, but that's not an AS problem, it's just the Internet in general. Exactly the same over on t'other place

I live in such domestic bliss, I only come here to read the arguments. It's like reverse escapism.

I do find sometimes when I post about my cars sometimes there's very little response. My Granada mk2 thread is a bit like that. It's in a very similar state as the base Sierra and the recent bonnet repairs and replacement I've posted about is very sympathetic to what autoshite is about ie: a used panel, prepped at home and painted on the cheap by rattle can. it'd be nice to have more reply's but then the amount of views on the thread isn't bad and I'm sure a lot of people have read it. I'm not sure on the other hand if maybe it's me or my cars people don't like or aren't interested in of course...

I think Jon's idea is good actually. Can we have a split motoring section as suggested, maybe pre 2000 and post 2000? At least that way it's easier for those not into one or the other to view threads that are likely to interest them.
