The grumpy thread

 (Mk3?),

I believe this harks back to a time in the board's infancy where there was a post limit on threads. Sort threads by views and the other two appear, albeit now mostly a hive of missing images and dead eBay links from the late 2000s.

Billy, I'll PM you when my computer is more than a random pile of shagged PCBs lying on my desk.
I didn't realise all the forum's problems were my doing.

My complaints were never aimed at you; this is also getting out of hand.

I hate the phrase "opinions are like arseholes - everyone's got one" but, crudity aside I can't think of a more concise way to say it. Just remember that your opinion isn't necessarily 100% binding and an opposing one 100% bang out of order.

Granted, Autoshite is now over 10 years old, so naturally there's bound to be members that come and go and a general attrition rate relating to that. What has also happened most significantly, is that the forum has become more popular. I joined in 2009 I think but was a lurker for at least a year before that, mostly because I was slightly fearful that I'd nothing to add to the forum, despite owning an Imp, AX GT, (replaced by a Sierra Sapphire) and a SAAB 9000 'modern'. Looking back, that self imposed banishment was stupid and I always consider my own actions more harshly than I do others' but perhaps a little consideration when starting a new thread or adding a potentially scathing comment etc wouldn't go amiss. Not because they're not wanted but simply because there's so much traffic here nowadays. A few years back, it wasn't unusual for there to be no comments of any sort for a couple of hours; at peak times, this is now down to a few seconds.

In an ideal world, Nigel would post up about his latest obscure European purchase/collection (his Estafette from the Isle of Man is an all time favourite thread), Hirst would enlighten us on his fleet (how's the Charmant doing?), Trigger would reinstate his spotted thread, Lankytim would post about his Allegro convertible and Meastro half van trailer (I'm probably very behind here) and Baz would let us know whatever happened to his Renault 20, amongst many others.

I carry on with my spotted thread regardless but I will make a slight appeal for readers to post comments, not because I'm vain but rather I like to add a worthy amount of content each post and therefore, pages get really bogged down with loads of photos, which probably puts people off, especially if they're viewing on their phones (I've only just been made aware of this notion, owning a Nokia with buttons).

Finally, sorry for wittering on and making a fifth paragraph but my suggestion would be to have another split in the forum: pre-2000 and post-2000. Why? It seems to be a bit of a natural turning point in car design and is nicely divisible; 20th Century and 21st Century. Quite how it would work, I've no idea, especially with bollox tat thread containing a 1982 Pony and Laguna IIs and Billy's buying of anything he bloody wants!  There's a danger that it'd be a slipper slope and we'd have numerous sub-forums but hopefully we could self moderate that before it became an issue. Plus, the Open Forum seems to be doing its job. Like I say, just my opinion, which is one of many opinions on here.

What i find most amusing is that if we was all standing face to face in some damp field somewhere surround by shit cars talking about this we would probably all agree with what each other had to say then someone will say it's all Triggers fault, everyone will laugh and then move on to a discussion about who had the best beard on Top Gear, Chris Goffey or Sue Baker.

I've been on here for close to 10 years now, and we've had the "Autoshite isn't as good as it used to be" bollocks more than once before. I'll say what I always do - everyone post whatever you find interesting, regardless of the moaners. If anyone has stopped posting in protest, stop kidding yourself - nobody cares.

As for quality content going ignored, quite often I enjoy reading updates on posts but don't necessarily have anything of value to add. So I realise this can be disheartening for people (getting no replies in general not just getting no replies from me) but the alternative is threads get full of "gr8 job m8" "nice1" and other general back slapping

Can be difficult to build momentum in a thread about your car, but that's not an AS problem, it's just the Internet in general. Exactly the same over on t'other place

I live in such domestic bliss, I only come here to read the arguments. It's like reverse escapism.

I do find sometimes when I post about my cars sometimes there's very little response. My Granada mk2 thread is a bit like that. It's in a very similar state as the base Sierra and the recent bonnet repairs and replacement I've posted about is very sympathetic to what autoshite is about ie: a used panel, prepped at home and painted on the cheap by rattle can. it'd be nice to have more reply's but then the amount of views on the thread isn't bad and I'm sure a lot of people have read it. I'm not sure on the other hand if maybe it's me or my cars people don't like or aren't interested in of course...

I think Jon's idea is good actually. Can we have a split motoring section as suggested, maybe pre 2000 and post 2000? At least that way it's easier for those not into one or the other to view threads that are likely to interest them.

TBH i like the sound of a split sections as well, one for autoshite and one for bangernomics.

I'm always saying it but that "like" button has made people lazy, it's much easier to tap a button than to reply to a thread with the same generic response as everyone else so that post ends up falling off the page where as the threads everyone moans about stay near the top as people can't help but to respond to them.

I like the idea of that too.

The only potential issue being that if the Bangernomics section gathers more posts than the Autoshite one, some will hold it up as an indicator that the GOLDEN DAYS OF AUTOSHITE are long over.

Forums evolve, Autoshite is no different. This bizarre obsession some have with the Autoshite of Christmases past, is little more than tragic grab for some form of superiority. I've watched these same people treat new members appallingly.

There are a few damaged individuals on here who enjoy misery and no amount of sections will ever change that.

You'll never get this much for free anywhere else.

Not sure about splitting sections myself; though I don't have anything modern I find old car owners (both meanings) can be some of the most boring cunts in the world.

As I was loading shopping into the Morris 10 at Tescos someone came over to tell me that his father used to have one, followed by a lengthy monologue on how they don't make em like that anymore. He rounded it all off by saying is it an Austin.

That's why I'm here.

Splitting is an interesting idea but deciding on what is " autoshite" and what is " bangernomics" sounds like it could be a recipie for further disputes.

Dear People of Norfolk,

We all know that we are the kindest people in the country and that is shown by how we use our vehicles. We always, always  let drivers out  from side roads.

We do it with a smile, and a wave.

The happy Norfolk person we have let out responds with a cheery wave and a smile right back at us , as he drives out into the path of the lorry, car or motorcycle (R.I.P.) coming down the right of way road.

Do you want to risk living in the knowledge you caused  horrible injuries or worse. Please don't let people out without checking and rechecking it is safe for all to do so.   If  there is right of way traffic coming do not do it! Do not put others at risk because of your thoughtlessness and bad driving kindness.

Rant over. Very sorry.

Many thanks go to all the wonderful people who provide this outlet for the woes of modern life.

Yes, we get it, you have a problem with Hirst.

Want to dial the self righteousness down a bit? Cheers.

Or start a thread on your motors.

This could be said of a lot of people though.

"There's no good content anymore" is a shit excuse for not uploading good content.

"Nobody will read it". They can't if you don't write it.

"If I write it, no-one replies". We get moaning about one word replies, inane chit chat and the bump for a real thread days... do you want replies or not?

MAKE YOUR MIND UP.

As a newish member, I don't know if autoshite was better back in the day, but I do know that it's pretty damn good right now!

I can't wait for the next instalment of threads like the Renault 6 or invalid carriage blue Cavalier. And don't forget that forum members are doing some great work saving cars that could easily have been lost. Would the "holy grail" Sierra still be around if this place hadn't brought people together to save it?

By all means look for improvements, but don't lose sight of what a valuable forum this is.

Regarding a split forum, why not go simple and pick a date. Say, anything first produced before 1995 (for example) can go in the old shite section. Anything after that can go in the modern shite section.

Like I said earlier, I like to read about all sorts but my main interests are the old stuff. At least a split means I don't have to sift through all sorts of stuff to find something I want. Then if I want to have a look through some more up to date stuff it's easy to find. It's not like we'd be banning anything from the forum just giving it it's own place. I'm sure there's poeple here who don't really care much for looking at the classic and really old stuff too.

I do agree about the moaning about content. If it's so bad then do something to try to change that. Failing that there's a question really about why bother coming here at all? I know what I said on the last page about my own threads still stands but it's not going to stop me updating them or posting about anything new I might get.

If your pissed about all your mates from the good ol days not being here at the moment then why not try to make some new friends on here?

Since I've been here I've met, both in the real world, and online some fantastic people. It's pretty much a given that you won't get on with everyone, but there's loads of people on here and at least some must surely share your tastes in cars etc etc.

This.

It will never be perfect.  It will never be what everyone wants it to be.  It WILL be what we make it, and generally it ticks along fairly well.

The garage door at my late mother in laws house is the bastard child of beelzebub - think of Arkwright's cash till in open all hours - a collection of springs, bars and cams - like a medieval gimp / torture device.

It has never operated properly and needed treating with respect otherwise it would remove various digits. The house is being put out for rent so it needed sorting. I called a garage door specialist who despite arrangements for me to be there when they tipped up just turned up, decided they couldn't get the parts but measured up for a new door.

Sorry, but fuck off.

Ten minutes work with a hammer and some duckhams hypergrade and door opens, closes and locks.

I need to sit down before all this negative energy brings on a stroke....

I am a gardener and my computer skills equate to single finger typing,

For example my black Friday disaster thread took me longer to upload pics and type a half readable story than the whole calamitous weekend took to unfold,

I enjoyed reporting it to some total strangers who I've never met to give them a laugh as well,

In total I have done five euro trip's with all suffering some form of problem but I couldn't be arsed to write a thread for every one, the effort involved is quite time consuming worse so if you don't type like a demon possessed,

I try my best not to waste people's time as its not replaceable but when you hear complaint after complaint about everything right down to punctuation I am left flummoxed, i meen does it really matter if I miss a commer or exclamation mark whilst discussing old cars.

I have absolutely loads of pics from finishing the mk1, fitting a cambelt, rebuilding an engine, some welding, some painting, striping the foosty,

The problem is I've now gotten into the habit of taking pics whilst working and none of it fits in here it's either modifying or moderns,

Guy I had look at my garage door only does repairs. He says pretty much any door can be saved, But more profitable to sell punters a new one.

So most just suck teeth and say you can't get bits for them and flog you a new one.
