What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

You'd think the loss of three family members and a friend over a 10-day period would be one for the grump thread and normally I'd agree, were it not for the AS Undertakings Inc. ("your final journey is our concern - full mechanical insurance included") cortege that did the biz at Auntie Muriel's sendoff earlier today: a late mk3 Granada hearse and two frogface Scorpio limos.

No pics, I'm afraid, because the Granny was, errrm... loaded, but the same machines are going to do the monster-in-law's gig next month and I know she'd appreciate the humour, in context...  :)

Like in the way that is not offensive in any way.

The last funeral I went to the family transport that followed the hearse was a Mk 10 Jag. made me smile (inside)

Nipped into town this morning and spotted a small dog running around looking panicked and bewildered close to a main road. Parked up, managed to soothe the dog and picked it up. Was clearly distressed. Asked a couple of locals if they recognised it but no joy. A few minutes later, further down the road spotted a lady in a dressing gown dashing around shouting. Back door left open by mistake and the dog had gone wandering. Dog and mum reunited.

Grin!

Eldest cat has kitty dementia. Worst aspect of this is random soiling. Thought I'd buy a Vax but then realised that I'd got a brand new one in the loft from Freecycle a few years ago. Vaxing activity has now occurred and the vicinity is sweet smelling again.

My mum wouldn't let me pap a picture of the hearse that did my nans funeral (when it was unloaded) it was a lovely mk3 granny, I followed it in a sierra hatch

Having grumped about this yesterday on the other thread:

Pissing axle on today's trailer is fucked with a full load and 170 miles from base. Cock.

It eventually became grin when I got shot of the load into another trailer, had a couple of airbags disconnected and a couple of ratchet straps holding the thing up. Then I got back to base without running out of hours.

The crack was all the way up the back, and across the top too, so just the about half the front bit holding things together...

So, in the almost two years I've had my car one of my annoyances was how crap the dash illumination was. I put this down to a combination of (a) French, (b) old and (c) electricity. I always meant to look into changing the dash bulbs.

Until tonight, fumbling around under the steering column for the bonnet release, I came across a little spinny wheel thing I hadn't noticed before:

MY EYES!

In my defence, I've not had a car new enough to have this sort of technological wizardry before. Although that didn't stop me mercilessly taking the piss out of my friend when he did exactly the same thing with his Mercedes. Still, at least I haven't been driving around with a torch clamped between my teeth for six months like him...

I searched for weeks, nay, months for the brightness thing for the dollop. It is of course in a totally logical place, a cubby in the glove box along with the clock adjust and remote boot release!

They've been fitting them since at least the 70s!

I drove back from Devon in the Prelude with horribly dim gauges. Could not find the adjuster control. Assumed it didn't have one. It did. It was just mounted behind the handbrake.

1968 AMC has panel lights dimmer - doesn't work.  1956 Chevy, ditto.  None of my 70's Fords (Escorts) did, but I think the MK3 Cortinas on did.  My Dad's 1970 Hillman GT had a single switch for the panel lights - on/off - as did Ma's 1967 Minx (arrow shape).  Later ones had a dimmer.  My Ma's 1959 Austin Seven (mini before they called them that) had a switch on either side of the central speedo - one switched panel lights on/off, the other switch on a couple of lights (one each side of the speedo) to illuminate the parcel shelf. Neither of my 2 Maxis 1970 and 1972 had panel light dimmer.

Austin Princess has a three-stage switch (off-useless-almost adequate) for the dash lights and did from launch in 1975.

A great big black bloke with a mouthful of gold teeth offered me $10,000 for the Pontiac this morning.   We were doing about 30mph on the freeway at the time.   I don't want to sell but the whole experience made me grin.

Anyone know if the XM has one coz I've yet to find it & the dash is very dim at night.

This story from Ipswich amused me: http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/two_time_ipswich_drink_driver_sucked_11p_in_bid_to_foil_breathalyser_1_4467103

“My mate Dave once sucked 2p when he was caught for drink-driving and got off, and we call him 2p Dave.

“Am I going to get in trouble for this?â€

Maybe he thought the change would do him good

I had an original beetle for six months before I found out why the dash lights didn't work - the head light switch turns to dim the dash lights . Didn't expect such a modern feature on a 72 car tbh
