What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

You'd think the loss of three family members and a friend over a 10-day period would be one for the grump thread and normally I'd agree, were it not for the AS Undertakings Inc. ("your final journey is our concern - full mechanical insurance included") cortege that did the biz at Auntie Muriel's sendoff earlier today: a late mk3 Granada hearse and two frogface Scorpio limos.

 

No pics, I'm afraid, because the Granny was, errrm... loaded, but the same machines are going to do the monster-in-law's gig next month and I know she'd appreciate the humour, in context...

My mum wouldn't let me pap a picture of the hearse that did my nans funeral (when it was unloaded) it was a lovely mk3 granny, I followed it in a sierra hatch

Having grumped about this yesterday on the other thread:
 
Pissing axle on today's trailer is fucked with a full load and 170 miles from base. Cock.


It eventually became grin when I got shot of the load into another trailer, had a couple of airbags disconnected and a couple of ratchet straps holding the thing up. Then I got back to base without running out of hours.

 

 

The crack was all the way up the back, and across the top too, so just the about half the front bit holding things together...

So, in the almost two years I've had my car one of my annoyances was how crap the dash illumination was. I put this down to a combination of (a) French, (b) old and (c) electricity. I always meant to look into changing the dash bulbs.

 

 

Until tonight, fumbling around under the steering column for the bonnet release, I came across a little spinny wheel thing I hadn't noticed before:

 

 

MY EYES!

 

In my defence, I've not had a car new enough to have this sort of technological wizardry before. Although that didn't stop me mercilessly taking the piss out of my friend when he did exactly the same thing with his Mercedes. Still, at least I haven't been driving around with a torch clamped between my teeth for six months like him...

I searched for weeks, nay, months for the brightness thing for the dollop. It is of course in a totally logical place, a cubby in the glove box along with the clock adjust and remote boot release!

I've never owned a car without a dash lamp rheostat.  Even my 1949 Rover has one.

I drove back from Devon in the Prelude with horribly dim gauges. Could not find the adjuster control. Assumed it didn't have one. It did. It was just mounted behind the handbrake.

Austin Princess has a three-stage switch (off-useless-almost adequate) for the dash lights and did from launch in 1975.

I had an original beetle for six months before I found out why the dash lights didn't work - the head light switch turns to dim the dash lights . Didn't expect such a modern feature on a 72 car tbh

I'm trying to think myself now. On a BX, it's on the underside of the steering column, therefore absolutely impossible to see. Logical.

The X1/9 lets you adjust the dash lights from dim to dying glow worm.

 

To get the 2cv dash brighter you remove the dash and replace the 2w cap less bulb with a 5w one.

 

The c5 had quite a neat trick that let you turn off everything apart from the speedo at night- ie radio, heater controls, Rev counter etc.

 

Oh, and if you don't occasionally fiddle with the brightness control on the w124s then one night you'll get in and nothing will be lit up at all!

They're a bit dodgy though, I had one catch fire in a Bedford ca so I tend to leave them on brightest setting.

I've bypassed the rheostat on mine. The choice seemed to be a) bright enough to see b ) not bright enough to see in varying degrees. And I kept knocking it onto b ) by accident.
