800 is the same, constantly steaming up.

Rear window visibility is perpetually zero. Must be a Rover thing.

Recently [ice box mornings] I have had a 'rat scratching in a box' sound coming from the interior, as I drive along..

Again thismorning...

Some serious thinking/listening/spatial theorising had me resolve it was the Sunroof seal (like crushing very cold snow into a snowball) = whirrr UP/collumpp DOWN & noise gone :)

Silicone spray all around seal next job....

Sunroofs are pure evil.

I'm too tight to run the engine for de icing........place fan heater carefully in car and go in for cup of tea.

Return to car and drive off toasty warm......run heater on recirc air till engine warms a bit

Yep, the ex-Bo11ox 623 would mist up all too easily, mostly on the rear windows.

Incidentally, despite me knackering the headgasket it still lives. I sold it to a mechanic friend who plans on sorting it this year. He's robbed a few parts off it for his other 623, but that's only the new tyres I put on and the electric window switch that Bo11 fixed when he had it.

I’m also a warm water from the kettle type de-icer.

Number of cracked windscreens: 0

Number of pedants who tell me I will crack my windscreen: eleventy-million

Gave up trying to defrost the omega this morning. Went to the garage and took the mx5. As no frost.in garage. Put the top down too.and put my hat on.

Heater is very hot, exhaust is very loud.

It's not very fast but sounds mental.

Two of the three 600s I've had were really bad for misting up.  The only one which wasn't was the diesel.

I'm sure de-icer used to be more effective in the "old days".

no longer has ethanol in it

It's definitely a Rover thing.  The 400 is a bugger for misting up unexpectedly before everything is warmed through and will mist up the rear screen at any point.  Solution is the same as in the Princess; crack the front window open a quarter inch.  Cars need to go back to having opening quarter lights, then this sort of thing wouldn't be an issue.

It's not a Rover thing as much as a big car thing. The loadspace windows on the Volvo are equally bad for it (as was my 740), the only way I could even remotely counter it is the microwaveable car dehumidifier/rice sock method, every day every winter.

An other +1 for hot water. I just fill the kettle from the hot tap. It just needs to be luke warm. 25 years and no cracked screen.

The Visa was frozen on the inside when I got back to the station yesterday. I thought it had just misted up on the inside as I had parked facing the sun but when I went to wipe I had to scrape that with my Screwfix card too.

Grump for the day 5:30am start for work due to generator testing on another site we support.

Grin for the day, despite 50% failure of all the UPS' my bodgery last time we had a power failure to get everything working with loads of cables draped everywhere seems to work. Except for the phone system, but if they can't report a fault it didn't happen right? Besides that's so old fashioned it'd survive a direct nuclear attack (which would improve Rotherham).

Overall I don't think it's a grin or a grump so news 24 is the place for it. Plus I get to finish at 1:30 if I want because of the silly start time.

Do you work for Cap? That’s a big DC they have on the Corus site.

This sort of information makes me wonder if "we" are ALL on some sort of spectrum.

They're both fine, don't worry, the Princess just needed to give the Rover a jump. After two months and a meagre 20 miles during that whole period, the Rover's battery only had enough grunt to unlock the doors. I took it on a run to get some charge back in it. I guess I'll have to use it a bit more often and stop driving the Princess everywhere.

Needs to hop over to the calendar thread this one is perfect.

This week I've been using the 206cc to get to work.Because it's smoll so less windows to scrape. Also because the heater is fantastic and as it's smoll it gets toasty real quick.Lastnight went to get some pez and the filler cap is frozen.Couldn't get the key in so popped it in my mouth (eurgh) for a minute.Yeah I could've bought some de-icer from the petrol station but where's the fun in that.Got the key in but it wouldn't turn so back in the mouth and a bare hand over the metal filler cap.Success the autoshite way..

MR2 this morning - same approach - although no driftyo exhaust. the locals thought I was mental though….. was bloody great and a lovely wakeup before the humdrum office day.

Also - bit of a softy one - almost boiled water in the drink holder - between the thighs until the heater catches up. IT'S SEALED - no nuns or kittens will be hurt - and as a bonus - if it does leak, I'll be unable to reproduce.... which can only be a good thing.

On the subject of defrosting/heating, the Nubira is really not fit for Nordic winters. It's -22 degC now, and the only way to stay warm is dress accordingly and leave the heated seats on permanently.

Speaking of the Nubira, I had to swap the brake piston and bleed nipple on the rear right caliper on it yesterday, after it had chewed through a pair of new pads in a couple months' time. I did the left rear caliper last summer (or tried to: the O.D. of the replacement piston I ordered was 0,1 mm too large, so I had to resort to cleaning up the old piston despite slight corrosion. It hasn't started binding as of yet, luckily).

I hate binding brakes. And lousy heaters. Should've bought a SAAB while they're still around.

This should probably go in the GOM thread, but beyond caring about what happened, even whilst it was occuring:

The Pasture of Profit is now closed. The land has gone and some recent 'life events' have taken their toll. Three cars left where they were, all coming back here. Met my mate last night, got the first one on then tried to get the second out ready. It bogged down as usual, low fuel (topped up) flattish tyres, not running well and on a weird incline with a tight turn to get out. Numerous attempts to move it by starting it in gear as well as trying to drive it got it half in, half out. The smell of burning clutch got worse, then another smell after a loud crunch. The smell was the gearbox oil we think. The smell of it actually being on fire, that is. Sand, gravel anything to try and stop it, finished off by kindly neighbour's kettle of water. Sump holed, oil pissing out, gearbox holed oil pissing out. Really can't be arsed now so instead of coming back here to be squirreled away for spares or long time storage, it's gone to meet its maker this morning. Have championed shite car ownership for a long time, but the straws are mounting up on this camel's back now and I'm nearly at braking point.

Bad times, Billy. Sometimes you just have to clear the decks any way you can.

Hope things smooth out for you.

It could be worse, you could have signed a lease for a brand new e Golf!

Sorry to hear Cav, but indeed getting rid is sometimes good.

To be honest, it was the disposal of one of your Focuses (Focii?) at the end of last year that strengthened my own resolve to ditch my other Mondeo.

Today I did a buy, and saved this from going for scrap...

P519GGM nsr.JPG

49000 miles and totally solid underneath; never welded and better than mine in this respect, although having been a town car all its life it does have a number of dings and scrapes. Wants a few odds and ends doing but can't see it needing much for an MOT.

Will be for sale once MOTd....... Supernaut, I'm looking at you :-P

How far away are you?

Also the aerosol de-icer I use is poundstretcher's finest.

The problem started when you began buying shite cars as an investment.  I've attempted that myself in the dim and distant past, with similarly disappointing results.  Don't even bother trying these days.

shite cars as an investment.

Never going to happen. The amount of time, effort and cash you have to spend on them for the sale price to be even £2k more than it was 10 years ago is utterly pointless. Might as well get an evening job at Tesco for a few hours an evening, would make orders of magnitude more money.

Keep the cars for fun. The moment it's trying to make any money, the fun is gone.

You are, of course, Lord Wuvvington correct.

It transpired to be a hopeless and stressful turn of events, putting me out of pocket but (hopefully) teaching me a lesson.
