Hanging off door cards does my bloody head in, really makes the whole car seem tired out. I've learned my lesson (and you can get clips cheap nowadays) so I usually just order a handful of clips before even starting the job.

The ones on my T5 are the absolute pinnacle of VW "quality" engineering:

Obviously they just snap into pieces whenever you pry them off

Just got back from Brooklands new year day show.

Massive turn out, definitely helped by the weather. Here's a few pics, I didn't take many - was too busy chatting.

I’ve always wanted to buy a big case of assorted trim clips for multiple cars, does such a thing exist?

The XJ-S is in the garage, battery off, cover on!

Jeep is gone (Huzzah!) and now someone else' problem. The battery on the Fiesta was flat, tiny jump pack started it nay bother... the battery on the Jeep was flat and the tiny jump pack... started that nay bother as well! I asked the guy who owns the Jeep where it was going (he told me a couple of days ago he'd sorted something out) and he admitted he had no idea, sorted nothing! It's now sat on the road outside his house with no, you know what at all.

I do know some right daft bastards!

Put petrol in the Merc, not a single unleaded pump in the station was working and as I was there, the diesel ones started to pack up as well. Fortunately (the Merc's fuel light has been on for days and it was seriously low) the one'super unleaded' pump worked so it got £20 of finest fuel to cheer it up for the New Year.

Front arch liners were more work to fit than all the work needed in the rear arches.  I hate fitting arch liners, but I hate rotten wings more, so needs must.

Jan 1. A new car (pictured with a distant cousin).

Well, I aquired it a couple of weeks ago, but in use as of today.

In other news, a real world car fancying friend is interested in the 19...... It might lead to an interesting swop......

Yup - I’ve been thinking the same and have had an eye on these:

I haven’t actually bought them so can’t vouch for quality.

I also thought Woolies Trim did a mixed case but I can’t find it on their site now.

Slightly late news but I've fixed the belt on the 405 and may have got to the bottom of the issue. The day started surprisingly well for my first visit to ECP. The drive there was particularly good as I spotted loserone of this parish in his Legacy. I'd pre-ordered the belt on click and collect and the correct belt was there. When he asked if there was anything else I needed I asked for a tensioner that the computer claimed was out of stock. It was but when I described the symptoms the 306 owning ECP chap diagnosed the problem was actually the power steering pumps bypass valve being blocked. I can fix that when I get back at the cost of a bottle of fresh PS fluid rather than £113 for a belt tensioner. As an additional bonus I remembered to film the spannering this time.

Top marks to ECP Durham

And all 500 pieces will be in a big bag so that you can never find enough of the ones you actually need.

And arrive a week after you have given up and bought them from the local factors in my recent experience with Aliexpress :(

1. Mileage on my 15 year old Nissan Almera diesel is now 99,908 - so just another 92 miles until the 100k! :common007:

2. Today I dropped it off at the main stealer who will hopefully sort out the passenger airbag as part of a recall notice. It feels odd parking a car of that age amongst the company of brand new Kumquats, etc. I'm sure the taped up passenger mirror and 'Autoshite' sticker will no doubt give it a bit of prestige* .

Have always wondered what happens when the job takes twice as long and every fitting, piece of plastic snaps on a recall on an older vehicle? Does the owner suddenly get hit with a big bill or does it come back in pieces?

The dealer should replace the plastic for free if one of their staff breaks it.

I have spent a few hundred pounds at that dealership in sorting out the brakes and a few services in the past 7 years. They are going to give my car a 'free health check' so they will no doubt try and sell me something when I go and pick the car up at teatime. Maybe a brand new Micra on PCP.

First cold start on the Merc with 100% veg!

-3 degrees and car has been sitting 2 days. Would have been quicker if the ignition barrel wasn't playing funny buggers..

I bought these a couple of months ago, they are acceptable quality and great for when you pull panels off as you don't have to worry too much about being too brutal

So my car has had a health check. They sent me a video of the car on the ramp by email and they found the following:

1. Front brake pads down to 2 mm.  Front wheels binding. One of the discs is corroded.

2. Oil leak

3. Power steering leak

I'm not much of a mechanic btw. I was hoping to nurse the car up to July when the MOT's due but it appears that the brakes need attention quick.

I'm being a bit careful with money nowadays, have given a lot of money to main dealers over the years and so I'll ask the garage near my place of work to take a look.

Popped out for a walk along Piccadilly at lunchtime. Tomorrow I shall try the Strand in search of fruit but today was all about finding some sushi (I am so blue collar it hurts sometimes).

Anyway I found myself outside the much lauded Piccadilly MG Dealer so I popped in. A nice man asked me if I saw anything I liked and I had to say yes, very much so....

Not for sale though.

If that's all they managed to find then I'd take that as a win 8)

Rented a 2-post ramp in Gravesend today (see also my Mazda fred). It is £20 for an hour mid-week, £60 for 4 hours or £100 for the whole day (9 hours). Bit of a premium at weekends.

I think if two or three of us get together for a day with some jobs in mind, could be a grand day out!

Pros:

- Nice guy, gets you on the ramp and leaves you in peace

- Tidy and quiet environment

- Easy access from A2

- Compressor available should you need it

- oil drainer

- Nice workbench

- Well lit

Cons:

- No loo

- No sink

- No heating (you could easily bring your own)

- the road nearby is controlled parking

That looks jolly handy. There are a number of jobs where I'd happily pay a few quid to avoid rolling around on the floor. No loo would be an issue at this time of year particularly! Suppose one could bring a couple of empty bottles.....

Yeah, but only 5 mins from centre of town for food and loos etc.

The no loo thing might be illegal as if you have more than 1 employee you need to provide a loo and washing facillities. If they are ignoring that rule how many others are they breaking ? Are they properly insured and is all the equipment saftey checked ? Why pay £20 an hour to do it yourself when a lot of smaller workshops are only charging 40 an hour to do it for you.

It's just the one guy, private hire - not run as a business. Valid questions though!

£11 a hour if you go for a whole day.

Here's his full ad:

There is a pro garage in Medway that will do it for £24 an hour, but is likely to have fewer of the concerns you note above...

Further around I discovered something. If you work hard, commit, and strive to greatness, you too can have the things of your dreams. Such as a sporty black two door number.

You know you are Autoshite when you see this and say “wow, that’s an early mk3 Polo”
