Ghosty Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 It's a bloody good thing I didn't come down as on Saturday I got an email asking me for my right to work documents in video form and it would have been a wasted trip!

davidfowler2000 Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 I'm home btw. 0122 arrival so exactly 5:30hrs from the field. 365 miles. No stops, 70mph on the cruise control. Have photos... laterz. Shite Ron, DSdriver, wuvvum and 9 others 12

davidfowler2000 Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Resteded and relaxeded today mostly spent in the garden sunning myself drinking gin but time to chill out and get the photos up here. So good to see some long unseen faces and as usual, many thanks to @Mrs6C and @Six-cylinderfor hosting a bunch of lunatics. My trip south also tied in with taking Mr @captain_70s to Cheadle to pick up a car he had bought - a white Volvo 740GLE sight unseen. The best kind of Volvo. Read all about it on his collection thread. I then headed over to Ilkeston to see about getting a tear drop caravan / camping trailer built. No pictures of that but it's one of the Mod Podz. Google it. Then from there down to the Field of Dreams for mid afternoon. Day 2. Mr @Talbot cut some grass then decided to do a service on the mower. Blunt blades and choked with grass and mud... @Mrs6C started trackwork for the "Ooh Aar" line. I forget what it stands for. Meanwhile I got finally got a chance to photograph the V70's recently refurbed wheels, done in Sparkle Silver. Other than that, just a general potter about... I almost stayed the Sunday night too but I thought after I had dinner I'd head up the road to avoid the Monday bank holiday traffic. A good plan seeing as I did the 365ish miles home from the Field in one hit with no stops and a completely uninterrupted journey. No accidents, no diversions, all roads ran at the speed limit including the road works around Stafford / Stoke (now 60mph not 50. yay). Bob on 5:30 hrs, average speed 65mph, 33.6mpg (trip computer so about 32mpg) while running the cool box and using the odd bit of air conditioning. egg, brownnova, LightBulbFun and 15 others 18

beko1987 Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 What struck me the most, and @davidfowler2000 s pics confirm this is the bias towards the early 2000's in terms of (Road going) chod! My car, the 306, 2 of the mx5's, beetle, @bub2006s van, grahams's 206 c15...all 2000 to 2003. Even the van gave a valiant cough at bringing early 2005 to the proceedings Do we feel dirty or celebrate this fact*? Mrs6C and DSdriver 2
Crackers Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Thanks @Six-cylinder and @Mrs6C for hosting, nice to meet you both today, and the few others who were also there. Next time I'll try and come up on a busier day to meet a few more! LightBulbFun, bobdisk, Six-cylinder and 2 others 5

Considering that the 2000 to 2003 stuff is 18 - 21 years old is easily overlooked. LightBulbFun Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 that was a lovely extended FoD weekend thank you to @Mrs6C and @Six-cylinder for hosting us once more it was lovely to catch up with various shitters etc and a surprising amount of things on the list got done! probably because the main field was not available and so we could not get distracted driving various chod and bits of heavy machinery around LOL (although I was still very kindly given the opportunity to drive a few vehicles around the paddock area ) they (I was going to say we, but that implies im actually good for something!) even managed to get some work done on Dolly they got both the back brakes working, but a brake line let go when they attempted to get the front working sadly, but best it happened then and not when your trying to do an emergency stop from 50! she even got a wash and cleaned up very well and one for the railshite fans I love how relatively modern everything is in Euston, and then they have these signs which look like (and probably are) right out of the Mid 1970's I am very much looking forward to the next one! Six-cylinder Posted June 1, 2021 Author Posted June 1, 2021 Is the weekend 3rd 4th July too early for another FoD open weekend? It seems I opened my mouth too soon and we are at the Citroen DS Rally that weekend, how about 10th - 11th July? Floatylight, Crackers, DoctorRetro and 1 other 4

I think you are spot on, when cars are 15 to 20 years old is the sweet spot for buying them. They are too old for most people’s everyday transport and not a desirable future classic. I have discovered that when buying a car at its least fashionable or useful is a perfect time to buy it for buttons and then let it age with you. There does seem to be a general up valuing of most cars and my bargain bottom only applies to regular cars. I seem to get as much pleasure out of a £333 car as a £3,333 car. Funny this topic should come up because at the weekend I was looking at @Crackers 16 year old Focus and thinking if buying an early Focus now could I avoid “FORD TAX”. Crackers Focus is in great condition and my memory of an early Focus is a decent drive. LightBulbFun, beko1987, Yoss and 3 others 6

IMO the Mk1 Focus is one to buy now, you can get a nice one for peanuts, even an ST170, and you're unlikely to lose any money if you sell it later down the line. They are basic no-frills motoring, but a pretty good steer. Mine has been utterly reliable apart from breaking springs, and it's (possibly because it's a very late one with low miles) still free of rust. Just don't get a 1.6 unless you have a fetish for rowing the gearbox. When I eventually replace it, it'll probably be offered on the forum. Six-cylinder and LightBulbFun 2
