I got some stick from friends about the number plate, but when I was 20 I felt cool AF driving a proper RWD, 6 cylinder Autobahnstormer.

Has to be this one:

Insanely stylish, hugely specced executive express. Best part of 300bhp but sensationally comfortable. In my ownership it put 100% of tailgaters and smart arses firmly where they belonged, a dot in my rear view mirror. For that reason, plus I needed to liberate some funds after an emergency house repair, it had to go.

I'd love another but I think I'd lose my license sooner or later.

based on the reaction I get from the public (and how the local youths have at times asked me to "rev it!") i'd say it counts as a "cool car!"

I don't think I've had a car that has brought so much positive attention.

BMW 5er

Although still quite a normal everyday car for many people, this BMW is actually very nice. Its a got great stance, sounds nice and has just enough "executive" toys on board.

Rover 827Si

I would also add my Rover 827Si. It had a TWR bodykit and Roversport wheels.

It's a tough one, lots of honourable mentions but personally for me this was the coolest.

Probably this one, I was about 26 when I had it. Unfortunately not a real Alpina but it had all the genuine cosmetic bits. It was a 325 auto from the days before BMW bothered fitting any pansy safety systems (or even an air bag).

I guess the Minis I had were cool too, but they weren't so rare back in the late 90s/noughties.

Desperate to scratch my "Street Machine" itch at the age of 19, I spotted this in Auto Trader.

3.0 V6, paid £900 for it.

Simultaneously the coolest and worst car I have ever owned. On the way home from the seller, the driver's door flew open on a left hander. In the two years it possessed me, the failures just escalated. In no particular order:

HGF on the right hand bank.

FTP'd at a petrol station, RAC man fitted a couple of new spade connectors and commented on the shiteness of the wiring. 30 miles later, said wiring caught fire.

Propshaft sheared off while honking along the M3.

Heater matrix shat itself, filling the cabin with steam while doing 70 on the M25. At night, in winter in rush hour traffic.

Various welding and corrosion issues. Well, it was 20+ years old so we'll let that slide.

When it was running I thought it was cool; it sounded great.... which took my mind off the terrible nose-heavy handling.

Sold it for £650 plus my Street Machine collection; I was all done with modified cars.

The guy who bought it popped back a couple of times. He wanted to know what car the axle came from as the differential had exploded.

The final kick in the bollocks when he told me the engine was a 2.5 not the 3.0 I had thought it was. I always wondered why I struggled to beat XR3s at traffic light GPs.

EDIT: This was the coolest car I've owned in AS criteria. Four years old when I bought it and drove it for 17 years with no issues. HGF sent it to the bridge; I was going to get it repaired but it was starting to rust at the rear end and my car dealer mate talked me into buying a 2003 Almera for half the retail price.

Yep you're right of course, what a honey.

My 86 205 GTI wins cool points now but nobody gave it a second glance in 2002.

Apart from the bloke in the Tipo that I crashed into, on my way back from the Autoleads interview in the snow.

I had an 89 205Gti 1.6 which is still the coolest car I ever owned despite it being followed by a Golf Gti 16v, 405MI16 and a Sapphire Cosworth.

Then married, kids, Octavia estate and Ford Galaxy.

My current company car is red ID Buzz which is either cool or a total embarrassment depending which family member you ask.

So you should have given him a second glance.. but you didn’t.

I'm pretty sure none of the cars I've owned have ever classed as cool. A nicer example Corsa B/sportier Megane II, maybe. I felt like the dogs bollocks picking up the first Qashqai brand new but I'm not sure it makes it cool.

Maybe the ex-blood car Octavia - it still being mostly stickered up could have been considered cool I guess!
