New Years Car Resolutions?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Apart from the usual New Years Resolutions we all have that we never do, i.e. go to the gym, get richer etc... what car/shite-related New Years Resolutions are you aiming for?

This year, I'd like to;

1. Get the XJ welded and MoT'd so it can be a functioning member of my fleet again.

2. Sort the Vectra out, again, de-rust underneath, new MoT etc...

3. Maybe find some permanent/covered parking (this is very unlikely)

4. Drive a Yank. I've never driven a Yank tank before and seeing @Weird Car's Buick made me realise I've never actually driven a US land yatch before.

5. Attend more AS meets (work depending)

6. Do something with the Rovers, even just a little fettling/get them started and moved.

Weld Lancer

FFS finish off the little jobs on my Suzuki SJ I've been putting off for about three or four years, there's a day of work there why can't I just start it

I have a long list for the Maestro including pulling the dash out, fitting a new door and installing period correct Unipart cruise control.

That's before I get to the stereo upgrades and the oil pump replacement.

Going to be busy in 2026...

I need to get some form of easy going project. I can't kid myself into thinking I can do major mechanical or welding work, but I just need to get something to bugger about with. A Renault 19 on Facebook Marketplace has caught my eye... but ideally a tad newer.

Free up at least one car-sized slot of my undercover space so I can  do major mechanical and welding work free of weather restrictions

Make one of my three bicycles usable. And use it.

Get the C220 Estate/FreeLoader swap completed by end January.
Decide what to do with FreeLoader after that.

That's (boringly) it at the moment. There's bound to be wee niggles/MOT prep stuff to do but no plans to buy any new cars (I've never, ever, ever said that before).

Perhaps an Autumn  trip to Belgium/Germany or Ireland in the SLK or CLK - depends on mutual work schedules and horse/dog sitter.

Get my old Z4 back on the road, it's been sitting since 2022, with a load of parts in the boot which needed fitting before I fell ill, recovered and then had no time for!

That, and replace the V50 for something equivalent in safety, size and utility, but just nicer.

I'm going to attempt something I've never managed before... I want to keep my ST170 for the full calendar year.

Change my car. I wanted to move my i10 on in 2025 but due to a lack of a regular income didn't happen.

Try and use the Laurel more than I have done over the last year or two (having sold a couple of the fleet that should happen anyway).

Assuming no big bills, continue with the Lexus RX as the sensible but still enjoyable and satisfying daily driver. This will include a month-long trip to France in the summer.

Get the 'mystery' 3rd car here. Hopefully not too much left to do on it, then I can start enjoying it once we get better weather.

Sort the Mercury out and use it more.

Its been a bit neglected over the last year with other things going on and my lack of interest in, well, anything really!
It’s not falling apart but does need a really good going over, thoroughly cleaned, chrome polished up etc. There’s also a tiny rust hole in the bottom of one door so I’ll buzz that up and paint the door bottom too.
Then a major cavity/underbody wax session will be in order.

Keep going with the Manta regardless of how daunting it can appear. Just break it down into sections and work away.

Other than that keep the fleet going and use them as much as possible, especially the Porsche which spent far too long on the naughty step last year and barely got driven.

Replace the ten-year old belts on the Connect. Maybe fix it's cam-cover oil leak.

Use WiFeY much more.  Find a windscreen fitter who can fit my new windscreen seal for me, and assuming that cures the water ingress, get some carpet down at last.

Figure out what to do with Jacqueline.  She's not playing ball and just takes up space in my back yard.

Find some proper storage for stuff, ideally get myself a small industrial unit to store the cars and bikes I have and would like to also acquire.

Half heartedly try to sell the Porsche before the policy renewal comes around and doubles again.

Get an interesting mostly useable and disposable value classic like an ADO/Viva/chummy

Buy less cars?

Or buy more cars?

Only one can be true but both are true until proven.

Happy 2026 folks 🎉

- Pick up my D2 Audi S8 from the garage that had it for 2 years if it's still there

- Get the D3 S8 on the road

- Get the R129 on the road

- Make significantly progress on my E39 528i (needs jacking points)

- Figure out what's wrong with the Caprice's gearbox

- Get one of my Oldsmobile Auroras on the road

-Reduce the fleet by selling a few cars and stopping buying more

Next car purchase gets collected next week...

- Fix my clio trophy valve float issues and get high boost map done to see 450+hp

- Fit new turbo setup and ecu to my Kangoo, high boost map and see 450+hp

- Get my Renault Extra back on the road, requires Inlet gasket and a couple of small jobs

- Sort rusty arch out on megane r26, booked in for march at local bodyshop

- Cambelt and aux kit on the blue dci

Rest work so drive and repair as necessary.

Do more trackdays. Croft and Spa Francorchamps booked already.

Get Cortina running and on the road.

Progress Sierra project

Use mustang as a summer car.

Rearrange storage so I can work undercover (just came in from working outside as it's snowing despite having a double garage and double car port).

Sell all of my surplus Land Rover series 2a/3 spares, sell/scrap all of my current fleet, buy a Mitsubishi seven seater 4x4 and a late Maxi 1750.

May get a crew cab van. Sadly, due to the wet belt bollocks, it won't be a Transit. It'd be useful to have something for the bikes (push and motor)  and it doesn't need to be huge, so maybe a Trafic 170.

It might also be time to admit I'll never 'properly' get some of the motorised two-wheelers on the road, so a couple might go.

In 2026 I need to do something with the Renault 19, and that something is probably to stop owning it by giving it to a new owner. I’d love to see some nutter formulate an insane collection mission, although I think that would be brave unless it stays on this island.

There is a third option. Don't buy anymore and don't sell anything.

That would be boring though. I think I'll be trying this.

I'd like to fix and enjoy the stuff I already have. With developing my skills further if I can.

Maestro is booked for a car show later this year. So that's priority for the moment.

Then on to the Astra Saloon as my main project.
