Shite on television

How come we don't have a thread for this?

"Tutti Frutti" on BBC4 is pure hoatching with 1986 shite; the band's van is a shagged Mk2 Transit and the guitarist's Mk3 Cortina isn't much better. Grimy post-industrial Glasgow supplies most of the street scenes.

I don't watch much telly but can distinctly remember a tidy looking Nissan Cherry, on a Y plate I think, randomly appearing in an episode of Eastenders not that many years ago.  Perhaps there's a warehouse full of tin like that which is occasionally pressed into use for a particular storyline?

The latest series of the crown has had a veritable cornucopia of 90s chod in it…

Although the Toyota Avensis in a scene set in 1995 did nearly have me calling points of view…

A Cherry N10 seemed to be on the screen for a long time back when I used watch Eastenders every so often. In the 1980s, maybe into the '90s, there was also a Marina which seemed to be a bit of a fixture - might have belonged toTony Carpenter?

I'm still ploughing through Public Eye, recorded off Talking Pictures TV. The 1970s episodes are particularly good, with a decent amount of location filming meaning there's plenty of everyday cars to be enjoyed.

This was a similar thread you might have missed.

I wanted to watch this but was away for a few days & can't record anything due to my TV ariel being out of action!  Hopefully it will be on Iplayer for a while.

My Dad really liked it back in the day.

Telly shite threads come and go all the time.

For the last few years a movie car company has had a green K plate Rover 216 that's a bit of a slag and has shown up in several BBC things, and a Ribena ad where the colour's been digitally altered. A load of FB people were foaming as the bumper 'falls off' in that ad, but it's clearly been rigged as those bumpers are pish to remove, and they don't come off unless you're intending to remove them, they just get pushed back on their mounts.

The TV adaptation of Blott On The Landscape from the 80s had a few good cars - civil servant Dundridge (Simon Cadell) had a Metro, corrupt politician Sir Giles Lynchwood (George Cole) had a Vanden Plas SD1, he and his wife also had a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud which happily is still on the road today, and there's lots of background stuff including a Mk3 Cortina and (iirc) a Renault 16 which get crushed by a demolition crane.  There's a Cressida which appears in a few background shots which I believe was owned by one of the production team, and a few police vehicles including a Maestro, an early Range Rover, another SD1 and a later Cortina plus a couple of early Transit ambulances.

TR7 in the Detectorists, for anyone who hasn’t watched this I’d highly recommend, it’s very good television

But is the boot of a TR7 really big enough to swallow two metal detectors and the associated tackle?🤔

Has anyone noticed the Chrysler 180/2 Litre on the current Paco Rabanne advert? I`m sure there was one in a Churchill insurance advert as well about a year ago..

This Youtube channel has every series of Minder on it at the moment. Packed full of interesting old motors. Just make sure you have ublock origin on your browser to avoid the frequent interruptions.

Hang on, Minder was rebooted with Shane Ritchie in the 00s? Don't remember it!

In a few of the episodes of the rebooted Columbo TV series from 1989 there is a red Hyundai Excel 3 door (Pony) that appears in the background a few times.

(the rebooted series isn't as good as the original 1970s series aside from the odd one or two).

That version (series 11) was crap and never had another series. Series 8-10 with Gary Webster was OK but only the Dennis Waterman series are the “real” Minder.

The TR7 is owned by Mackenzie Crook, co star and writers of the series.

Channel 4's Somewhere Boy, broadcast late last year, had all sorts of old rubbish in it, despite a contemporary setting:

Somewhere Boy review – a beautiful, rare find that is in a world of its own | Drama | The Guardian

There's also a mark one Laguna and various other old nineties cars.  For old house hunters, too, there are all sorts of original features still present in the family's sixties semi.  Perhaps the director was going for a sort of timeless feel.

For some good shite spotting try Talking Pictures TV. They show loads of those Look at Life reels and other old documentaries.

Not watched Stonehouse yet, but Mk3 'tinas in Aus is probably wrong anyway. There were plenty of locally built Fords by then.

The TC Cortina (as the Mk3 was known in Australia) wasn't a bad seller, though weren't as popular as the bigger Falcon.

All versions of the Cortina were built at the Broadmeadows plant outside Melbourne, alongside the Escort - in addition to the UK 1.6 and 2.0 litre four-pots, 3.3 and 4.1 litre straight six engine options, sourced from the Falcon, were also available in the TC.

The bigger engined versions weren't reknowned for handling particularly well... saw a few when I was out there, including these at the legendary Flynn's Yard outside Cooma in NSW.

TD (Mk4) Cortinas had larger, US Federal-style bumpers and side markers for some reason.

I assumed he was saying that the cars in the programme were LHD, but as they were supposed to be in Australia should be RHD. It's ambiguous and I haven't seen Stonehouse so don't know
