It doesn't mean they watched the whole thing right through. It went on most of the day, didn't it. I wouldn't be surprised if that many tuned in for an hour.

Where are you getting the 500M figure from?  2.5 billion people apparently watched Diana's funeral live, and that was before live streaming on the internet was a thing.  Plus there are more people now than 25 years ago and the Queen was more significant than Diana.  The 4 billion estimate doesn't seem unrealistic to me.

There were only 1.47b households with televisions back in 2010, probably significantly less whenever Diana died, I know there might be more than 1 person watching the telly but 2.5b seems like bollocks surely?

https://www.statista.com/statistics/268695/number-of-tv-households-worldwide/#:~:text=Data on the global television,surpass 1.8 billion by 2026.

I've just googled this and it's what came up, I'm not standing by it if anyone has better info.

How are those TV viewing figures arrived at?  Look up how they are calculated in UK and you will see it's essentially a tiny survey that's extrapolated to be applicable to the whole country.  So hardly rigorous.  Now think about how that data would be collected in Afghanistan or Zambia.

So any figures like this should be taken with an entire mine's worth of salt.

Also, for the people who believe 'royals bring in tourists', check out the most visited country in the world.  Turns out it's France, and we all know what happened to their royal family...

Although the most visited tourist attraction in France is the (former) royal palace of Versailles, so it's still sort of true.

In the same way that art is more popular after the artist is dead, royal palaces are more popular after the royal family is dead?

In the "does anyone really care" department, the Louvre is the most visited french attraction, by some margin, mostly dead peoples work.

The best thing to visit imho is Puy de foue. By live people. Utter madness.

I visited the royal palace of Versailles by accident. I was tying to get off the ring road & head south but there I was, in my camper amongst the bin lorries at dawn.

As much as it is good that they gave her a good send off but to change programming on obscure tv channels when all the big channels are covering it does seem a bit much .

The blank 3 minutes instead of ads was much worse. Mind you given 50% of ads seem to be for funeral plans these days, it would have been a bit tasteless , although SunLife could have changed their ad to “ A magnificent funeral, but you won’t be so lucky having the state pay for yours…….”

Every other night on Border TV  there’s a new scheme announced to “attract more tourists” to the Lake District. FFS the place is over crowded as it is. The other favourite topic is proposed schemes to restrict holiday lets there!?

I guess the folks in Hyde Park flats benefitted after the student games, they were reclad for the event I think. Sheffield City Council are nuts with money anyway, round us they’ve replaced the rooftops on all their houses, there wasn’t anything wrong with them they just had some money spare, instead of using it wisely they reroofed the cities housing stock...

The BMW has developed a squeaky aux belt.

New one duly purchased. Sadly somebody has been there before me - they have broken part of the tensioner off where you locate your star bit.

Is there mileage in giving them fake bank details, telling them to fill their boots and immediately contacting the FCA with their number? Or is it equally likely they'd be successful in pulling money out of the account if the details you give out turn out not to be fake?

The chances that any made up account details would link to an account are extraordinarily small. I don't know the exact odds but think lottery chances

ETA i know i may be overthinking this, but my dad, in his last years, was scammed a couple of times, so i know how easy it is for them to reel in the vulnerable

First call of the day, I just say “hold on a second” and just walk away, waiting for them to hang up. Anything more than3, they just get “f@ck off”

It was a number somewhere in Surrey,  I assume they use software that disguises the actual number they're calling from making them look genuine as it's a UK number , the  international numbers were a giveaway

I thought I had a problem with slugs but was surprised they’d eaten through the woody runner bean stalks. Plants are normally safe from them once the stems get woody. However just caught the cat chewing through them , so I’ve been blaming the wrong culprit.

We've had problems with rabbits and deer this year. And moles.  And rats.  And a grey squirrel.

I had one about an RTA I'd been in.

I said I'd been waiting for them to call because I was waiting for my compensation for being killed in a 100mph head on in a reliant robin.

The fact they didn't immediately hang up tells you everything you need to know.

Now we have decent fencing up and the dogs have the run of the garden, our rodent and cat issues have disappeared.

Honey the small terrier has caught and killed a couple of rats whilst the other 3 keep chasing after the Magpies and Jay's that come looking for water.

A neighbour was walking her dogs which includes a mature Karakachan when they met a pack of Jackals that that wouldn't back down.

She did a quick about turn whilst the Chan going nuts and trying to chase them off.

I find it rather amusing to speak to unsolicited callers in a somewhat disrespectful manner and then make them end the call.  Here's how one went recently:

*ring ring*.

"Hello?"

"Oh hello, it's about your recent accident".

"You fucking stupid cunt! You made me stand up!"

"I beg your pardon? That's very rude"

"I was in the middle of something, you cocksucker.  If you don't like the way the call is going I suggest you hang up".
