The grumpy thread

Someone pulled out of a junction in front of me yesterday, I had to brake sharply and locked up the wheels. She had the audacity to start mouthing off at me. I wasn't even doing 30. She'd basically just followed the car in front without looking.

Anyway, pulled away and the steering went weird and floppy. Managed to wrestle it the 4 miles home, at 20mph with hazards on and one wheel squealing like crazy.

Checked this morning and the passenger side wheel is pointing out about 10 degrees. And looked underneath...

Yeah, that's fucked.

Just tried to top up the suspension on the Princess, it was a bit low on one side, nothing to be worried about as this is totally normal for a Hydragas car that's been put back into use after being sat about for a bit.  Connected the pump up and the connector self destructed.  That wouldn't be so annoying except for two things: it was tested and shown working before the pump was put away; it evacuated almost all the fluid from the suspension on that corner when it self destructed.

Car is now too low to drive because the tyre fouls the arch and I have to wait for the replacement connector to arrive from what I hope really is West Yorkshire.  And then I have to hope it actually fits the pipe on the pump.  And then I have to hope it's reasonable enough quality to last.

I could use the Maestro except the MoT has expired and the succession of storms has meant I haven't been able to get the rear arch back on so it stands a chance of passing.  I could haul the Lanchester out and work on that a bit more but honestly I think I'm just going to sit on my arse and play games instead because sod old cars today.

I’ve got a half restored “Darlek” type pump with the right connector if you need it. I’ve tried selling it on eBay but nobody wants it. Yours if you want it for the cost of postage.

Shan't say no as I could do with a connector for the vacuum side too since it doesn't currently have one so a spares Dalek would be very handy.  Drop me a PM with details and we'll sort something out.

LED Light bulbs

Very minor grump in the grand scheme of things, but still grumpy nonetheless....

Poxy 9w LED Light bulb started flickering and flashing on and off. So it's goosed basically.

It's only a light bulb, why am I grumpy you may ask?

Because the thing is nigh on exactly 2 years old and only sees approx 2 hours use a day, switched on average 5 times a day I'd guess. So that's lasted about 1500 hours and 3500 ish switch ons. Much less than it's supposed to last!

On the converse, the ugly florescent one which is meant to be worse for the planet in the next room has been working perfectly for about 10 years now.

Doing the man maths I have to go through 5x "eco friendly" bulbs in the time an old one has lasted me...?

Said 5x bulbs costing the better part of £40 in total.

Single old bulb about £2

Hardly any energy saving when you consider the manufacturing and transportation of 5x more bulbs and financial energy savings written off by spending £38 more per light fitting every 10 years 😡

Grump over. Bulb begrudgingly replaced and binned

Washed this again today, as its been a while.

Lots of scratches, chips and marks that weren't there last time I washed it. Sussex's road conditions really are taking their toll on this little car already, and that makes me a bit sad.

Might have to consider some kind of WBOD for next winter because it's a bit harsh on the poor thing to treat it like this.

Yep, it's definitely getting crushed. Once I figure out how to get an entire full tank of fuel out of it!!! 😭

Argh that's always the way - something goes wrong just after you've brimmed it! Still, on the plus side it should weigh in for decent money the way things are at the moment...! Got any contenders lined up to replace it?

the cyclists near the tin box are pushing their luck , got stuck behind one on a single track road who was going up hill..

did he pull over into any of the passing places  , NFC .....  ok noted

then a new case presents itself , again a one track road , cyclist heading towards me ,

how is this going to work , wont he want his 1.5 m of space and right of way  ,

I am sat in a safe tin box , his call ....  he missed the car ...

Yeah, that's fucked.

Fuck me!  That arm was only replaced at the last-but-one MOT.  That's gone downhill quick!

No, that was the driver's side that was new I believe. Passenger side looks original.

I think it's the bit it mounts onto that's sheared off too tbf.

I did the driver's side at the last MOT.  The passenger side was done by my mate while his mum had the car, although looking at the MOT history that would have been in 2017 so it's been on there longer than I thought.

well i’d Have pulled to one side when safe to do so when cycling, but there is still no right of way- it’s priority: and the traffic in front of you has it.

Going down a country lane today, someone up ahead in a 4x4 waiting to pull out of an entrance.

being nice and helpful I flashed them out,

only to discover the horse box on the back, (that was hidden by the hedge ) as they pulled out.  Of course it’s going my way, for 5 miles. Slowly, of course, down the narrow lanes.

then our convoy of slowness came across the two side by side Lycra clad pushbikers, that the horse box towing combo couldn’t overtake.

Ahh bugger.

All this is going to come to a head when there's a serious assault on a cyclist.

I got the mower out yesterday from its winter slumber and after a bit of a faff with the plug and a blow torch off it went with a big cloud of oil smoke.

But after a few minutes she started to stutter and die and I noticed the priming bulb I replaced a couple of years back has turned all soggy and very useless.

I'd like to blame E10 petrol but I think it's more down to the Muppet that didn't drain the fuel out and run it till it stopped last October.

The replacement bulbs aren't much cop I've found - frequently deforming as above, or cracking. Its not worth buying more expensive ones, they all do it sooner or later.

How come everything on 'modern' cars has to be absolutely covered in brittle plastic. Absolutely everything. Driving me frigging mad.

When I say modern, at the moment I specifically mean the 2005 Elgrand so not that modern but still a right royal pain the jacksy. It really does put me off actually doing any work on cars as it will take an hour to undo everything to then do a half hour job. Then I need to buy a load of replacement clips etc to replace all the ones that broke during my ham fisted attempts to remove them.

A visit from a relative and her family who live in The Netherlands. That is not the grump.

The grump is her hubby brought the Covids with him. Came down with symptoms in the first two days.

Having been vaccinated they do not need to have test before flights. Fuck, now we have four adults officially confined to the house. Plus one 4 year old, who is full of beans. The registration system for detailing who has gone down with the lurgy is rubbish. Europeans can use ID cards rather than passports when travelling to other EU countries. The registration website does not allow for those ID card numbers to be filled in. It took many many phone calls to sort it out.

The wife and I have never caught Covid until now.  Thankfully it seems like it is the Omicron version so everything is mild.

Selling cars on the Internet

Don't get me wrong i'm used to the "best price" tyre kickers but with the Toyota i'm trying to sell i've had THREE no shows. Never ever had 1 never mind 3. They ask for address and phone number then disappear i just really hope I haven't got scammed or something. The last guy text me, messaged on gumtree and facebook, was supposed to come at 2pm today asked him to give me a message when he was an hour away so i could be home, that came and went then 2pm came and went sent him a message....cant make it sorry. 💩

I had really hoped it would of been flown out of their before the fighting started or that it could have avoided the battle somehow...

RIP you big beautiful bastard

Still can't fathom out how something so large is able to get airborne, I know its to do with flaps and lift and such but it still amazes me - big iron bird in the sky.

Seen the Airbus Beluga monster land and take of a couple of times at their Broughton site, quite a spectacle and really doesn't seem possible to me.
