119  to Croydon might be a while, then?

Expand

I used to walk down to Hayes Road, when I lived in Bromley, to catch the 119 to Croydon to spend my hard earned paper round money at Our Price records. I still have the Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Blondie albums that I got from there.

Small world. My gran lived on Links Road, West Wickham and my other parents on Pickhurst Lane Hayes. We were on Queensway, in Coney Hall. The only 2 bus routes I knew were the 138 & 119.

I lived off Westmorland Road and used to catch the 138 to go to Bromley High Street. My older brother went to Hawes Down School, that was on Hawes Lane, and used the 138 every day. The school changed it's name to Spring Park Upper.

I'm another one from that area, we lived in The Crescent off Goodhart Way until 1969. I went to Pickurst Primary and Junior schools and then on to Bromley Tech at Keston. Occasionally saw Ian Dury around Beckenham. David Bowie went to Bromley Tech but was older than me.

Unusual choice of towbar assembly on that Beetle...

or was it common to just bolt the ball hitch straight on to the bumper?

Yes for trailers. Probably not on these days but I've seen a fair few like that over the years

Posted

I think I recall seeing similar, back in the day. Only for light trailers, I guess

Tow balls on bumpers used to be common, but they all consisted of a shaped proper bar that fitted behind the bumper. Two holes were drilled in the bumper blade, and the tow ball was bolted to the bar behind the blade. It gave a neat finish and made it appear that the tow ball was bolted just to the bumper. Used to have a few, will have a look see tomorrow if it ever stops raining!

Got this photo this evening.

Fenton car parts Limerick Ireland circa 1990/91 This pile was awaiting the crusher.

Takes me back,as this was dad's favourite place to get bits to keep the family chariot mobile.

I ended up working there for 14 years until it closed in 2007.

Real blast from the past for me.

Apparently the guy I got this from has others.

Is there anywhere left in the UK/Ireland that you can still do this? Around here you're not allowed to take off parts yourself. Saves me a fortune as I'd go in for some piddling, little bit and walk out with half a car in pieces.

Two reasons I suspect you can’t get you own parts off. Health and safety of course plus I would imagine serviceable parts get ruined by people trying to get to the parts they want and just destroying anything in the way.

Not quite, RGS Hutchison at Persley Quarry in Aberdeen still allows you to remove your own parts. Its a few years now since the cars were stacked but its still open for the public to wander around.

Was just going to say that. I went last year after a 20 year absence and it was just the same, fantastic place.

Just googled that, I'm passing there in a couple of weeks time, I wonder if they'll let me in for a wander around for old times sake. :D

Again, not quite. My local scrapyard here in Norfolk lets me wander around and take bits off. I’ll be gutted if it ever closed.

That's Balby Doncaster it's an absolutely ace yard. Believe it or not the back wings of that hammered A55 mk2 are now on my Oxford Estate (see avatar)

The chap who owns the yard has some right rare old chod a rare Mazda Estate iirc. Think there was a Vauxhall Victor Estate with a Jag V12 and running gear in the yard. I'll see if i can dig some pics up.

Looks like I never got around to posting some pictures up, better late than never I suppose.

I'm sure I posted a link from Balby yard that @mk1_4dr and I went to years ago but can't find it now?

Anyway have some of my potato cam pics from 2011.

The Jag V12 Victor Estate as mentioned.

A summer afternoon wandering  around looking at & clambering in & on piles of rusted old motors, with the ever present smell of oil, mixed with warm old iron/ cars.

Bloody fabulous, glad I'm old enough to have experienced it.

I think it’s a couple of factors why you generally can’t wander round, mainly H&S. Theft will be another one, especially notable when people ask ‘to have a look round’. 🤣
