wheel nut
The attached photos are all from a Practical Classics supplement which was published in June 1992. Citroen CX is an interesting vehicle to have L-plates on. NSU looks tiny in comparison. If I had a time machine I would love to go back and save the Granada. Ultimate spec for me estate and DVLA check comes back showing it had a 3.0 litre V6. HMC, MiniMinorMk3, warren t claim and 10 others

MiniMinorMk3
The Cantrell Road one is not a bit of grass, the road has gates at either end and is not used for motor vehicles anymore. The one on Old Ford Road is now a Cul-De-Sac of houses.

You can see it in the background of the first photo. The scrap yard was his means of raising cash to restore the place. However, it had a feeling of hope over reality. There were a couple of articles on the place a few years later with everything looking even more forlorn. There was a girl at college (West Kent in Tonbridge) whose Dad owned a scrappy in New Cross. I even remember going there in the early 90s. There was nothing unusual about it then the whole area was generally run down. Unsurprisingly the site is flats now despite a very awkwardly shaped plot with a steep railway embankment to one boundary. Someone else's Dad had just started buying relatively large Victorian semis in Lewisham because they were £70k a piece and that was the level he was at. He didn't mention it to people down his local because they'd have taken the piss out of him. 1996 was the last year London was affordable for the average person. All a bit hard to comprehend these days. tooSavvy, sierraman and MiniMinorMk3

Blackborough House - Daily Mirror 2016 Lots more articles and images if you pop it in Google. I'm off for a small cry over lost times. There was a supplement or article in Popular Classics around 1990 which was dedicated solely to this place. It was a fantastic read. Remember actually using that yard in what must have been 1990/91. I was at uni in Exeter (bad decision - too small, boring and rains all the fuckin time) and needed stuff for my Saab 96. It took some finding in those pre-satnav days. You basically headed for Cullompton then drove around the lanes for a bit until it appeared. Yard and house were exactly as the pics show. They had pretty much everything if you were into old crap, with no moderns at all. Very much a rummage through the brambles and undergrowth and see what you can find job. Then hunt for the guy who ran the place somewhere in that massive Scooby Doo house. Happy days. Datsuncog, The_Equalizer and Split_Pin

The scrap yard was on the other side of the rail tracks to the gasometers. The scrap yard site is now part of Tower Hamlet Cemetery Park. Here's the gates that stop vehicles from going down Cantrell Road. Doesn't look like the Twoer Hamlets Council is bothered by any contamination. Tbh most were long established so the soil was well contaminated. I don't think environmental concerns did for most of them it was selling land at a good profit for housing & new Health & safety regs. That's what killed all the fun. Sad as it was proper recycling and more fun than buying bits off ebay. bunglebus
