My mate took the shot himself about 10 years ago so it's genuine enough, I've seen the original with the house it's parked beside.

Wondered that too, but Jap cars tend to have the fuel filler on the passenger side and often have a lot more body adornment, stripes, rubbing strips etc.

I did think maybe a late model Ford Tempo..

Close but no cigar.

The red rear light/indicator would possibly suggest something American though.

Also thought it could be a 1998 Toyota Camry, as they have a square filler and similar tailights, but as mentioned previously the filler is on the other side of the car..

My mate's been digging all morning now reckons it's a Subaro Legacy, and I'm inclined to agree. I always completely forget the Legacy existed, especially the bog standard saloon, but the slope at the top of the lights and the crease running through the filler flap matches exactly. 

Thanks for the suggestions, as Pro level car spotters it was embarrassingly tricky to pin down. 😛

Subarus have the filler on the right.
