bASe C4, £1500 Leics

While we're on the subject, how the hell does that fixed hub steering wheel work? It doesn't compute, I don't get how it's held onto the dashboard.

The inner spokes go to hidden hub on a geet big nut, just like every other steering wheel.
There may or may not be some gearing involved, I can't remember.

Said steering wheel gave no issue during the 11 years I owned mine, although the glovebox, air con condenser drier and engine eventually broke.

I will also say that my car, an SX with centreless alloys, was the fussiest little cunt about wheel balance I've ever encountered in 20+ years of driving.

NO-ONE, bar a motorbike place in Liverpool had a balancing machine that a: was calibrated properly or b: could balance a wheel accurately down to zero, which is what it needed.

I also had to steal it back from the dealership when they tried to make me pay for a warranty repair.

'WELL, Mr Burgess, we've got your key,' they said.

"We'll fucking see about that," I replied.

Off I went home in a taxi, still in my suit from work, and got a hi-vis jacket.
Spare key in hand, I strolled in the workshop bold as brass and told a young lad reversing a Dispatch that I was the area manager from the Manchester branch and that I needed to move that C4 (my C4, helpfully) for a customer who'd given me their key. Also, I was in a hurry, so could you please move that C2 and let me get on my way?

The lad hurriedly agreed and I slowly drove out of the workshop and right past the reception desk, the receptionist now goggle-eyed, with a big shit-eating grin on my face.
I eventually got the key back without a bill when I kicked off to fuck at head office about it and threatened to take it to the press.

Fucking thing.

They hit the bottom of their depreciation curve about 15 years ago! 😅 I'd be interested to know if when it's going to start going upwards :)

I remember thinking I scored a right bargain, £1295 from a dealer in 2008 for a shiny* 03 plate one.

Suffered OMGHGF after 4 years of trouble free motoring. Was actually a fairly decent car.

Just stupidly expensive to run for a 1.6 petrol, even for 2008 petrol prices!

Petrol in 2008 was pretty dear from what I remember.  Probably as expensive as it is now once inflation is taken into account.

Peaked at about £1.20 before dropping back to below £1 in early 2009.

I thought it was below the £1 mark then it spiked to £1.40 in 2013 ish, then down to 99p in 2015 ish then upwards from there..?

I'll have to consult my giffer style book where I have hand written every single fuel transaction, comprising of the price per litre, tank to tank mileage and date since about 2005 I think 😅

Being even sadder, I have it on a spreadsheet going back to  2003/4. In Jan 2008 I was paying £1.04/l, in June £1.12 and in December only 85p/l

I understood there was an issue with a change of regs recently where a NOVA or similar paperwork can only be carried out by the importer of the vehicle, and there are a list of approved importers.  Anyone other than that (EG a private individual) is no longer able to do the paperwork themselves.

There's apparently already a "tame" importer who will do the paperwork for a £95 fee, but it's still yet another bloody hoop.

I'd quite like it tho...

Rare Mk1 Punto EL (6 speed!)...

I think I'd opt for HGF repair rather than the proposed engine swap. I assume its the same 1.1 that always fails in cinq's/seicentos?

I saw that doing the rounds on the Book of Farce etc,

https://www.facebook.com/DAVO.bookface/posts/pfbid0qQMJi9Z6bt83gq2R2pQMHU6EVme8XHzgvMVjLLj45RmqZadqPqahmSijp68dPUNQl

but reading it, to me it just comes across like just a bunch of FUD to me, no links to anything or the such like, a load of hand waving panic, without actually understanding the system to hand

looking at it myself, looks like its still entirely possible to do it all yourself

and heres a link to a NOVA1 form so you can roughly see what your up against https://bfgnet.de/files/282/VAT-NOVA1-v03-feb-20.pdf

(I would see if you can request one from HMRC or whoever to get the latest version)

ill also tag @Dave_Q @Dick Longbridge because I know they have recent experience importing vehicles to the UK :)

Mine was post Brexit but I claimed on the nova form it had been in the UK since before 2020 (almost certainly had but can't prove it)

I have also seen some stories doing the rounds about private importers not being able to do a NOVA which seems to directly contradict the gov.uk guidance LBF posted which says you can email them to sort it and gives an address.

£95 to fill in some customs form seems a bit much TBH, a suspicious person would think that this is some wheeze by the "tame importer" and the car club to make a few quid.

Yeah I saw that and came to the same conclusion. Lots of stuff which is demonstrably false in that post (you can't get a replacement V5 anymore? If you try and register a car you'll end up with a Q-plate??) that I'd guess the rest of it is nonsense, too. Judging by the level of literacy involved I can only imagine the state of the V55 the author would send off so not really a surprise if it's come back as a 'no'.

Both of mine had already been imported from Italy and were complete with Nova declaration. I then applied to Doovla for UK registration whereby they insisted on sending out a chap to give it a basic i.d inspection. Simple enough really.
