You don't seem to have said what the fix was? Or is it just me?

Ben

The heavy clutch had the usual fix, - a new clutch.

What type of bulbs fit this?

Alfa 156 sidelight bulb socket

My last 156 was a facelift but the sidelight bulb on that was a tiny bayonet-fit halogen one, which you can't touch and was absolutely impossible to fit (without touching it)

I think that is what this is, as it aint no normal sidelight bulb...

Speaking of clutches and judders, Mrs Imp bought an 2010 1.6 petrol Megane a year ago (with keep fit rear windows!) instead of buying a Focus like I told her to and it had to have the clutch replaced by jct600 about a fortnight after buying it as the clutch was juddering to feck.

Recently the clutch has started juddering again when cold. Not sure what it is thats causing this.

I am wondering if they did replace the clutch or just fudged it. The new clutch didn't feel 'new' as the biting point was still at the top but I had a similar experience with a new clutch in her Mazda 2 and was thinking all modern cars were just like that just like the gearboxes have absolutely no difference between gears 2 and 4 other than the position of the gearstick.

I know some petrols have a DMF but am doubting this has. It will never replicate the problem if we took it back to the garage as its intermittent but I was wondering what it could be.

There is no sign of an oil leak but with the current conversation I thought it worth asking.

Just a thought but maybe it is DMF and the problem is the flywheel, not the clutch. When they did the clutch they may have just done the clutch and left the flywheel alone.

I tried this a while ago as the flywheel was within tolerance, but the clutch was never right, so the flywheel ended up being changed shortly after as well.

Cheers all, I think I mean oil temp really.

Pull out from our house on to country A road and regularly come up against people dawdling, was concerned about heavy acceleration only 5 mins it so after starting up. Temp gauge has not registered anything by this point and takes a solid ten mins of driving to get up to full temp

Am needing to clear some room at Beard Towers... Need to sell the Honda Prelude. A roffle may be in order.... Although would be looking at £15 per ticket. Would that be too much?

Poor alignment might be the problem? If the end seal was leaking it would be obvious when the clutch was changed. I've heard before about clutches and DMFs of different makes causing problems.

You may struggle as people are only likely to buy 1 at a time. So you will need 59 interested parties.

This reminds me of some watchdog program about Mr clutch or similar saying that a customer had a problem with their clutch and it was because it wasn't aligned properly . Errrrm no . As soon as the pedal is depressed once the clutch plate is aligned perfectly .

How generic are cross bars for gutterless cars? I'm hoping to buy a decent bike this year and Swift doesn't really swallow bikes. Silly side of me wants to put a row of spotlights on the front too.

Right folks, .....tax question............has anybody imported a car from the USA.

I know that importers, companies and such pay an import tax..............but these vehicles are for resale etc., etc.

My cars are not like this, they have been registered in my name for years, and as such are my property just the same as the clothes on my back and the bed I've slept in for 5 years.

My question is,....are the thieving bastards going to sting me for what is essentially my stuff and has been for years.

That's not really your question, as you go on to explain.

Haven't read it, in short ask the taxman.

The idea I have in my head though is there might be concession, and it might only extend to a limited number (i.e one) of vehicle(s) and it'll probably involve producing a load of paperwork to show you have used said vehicle for a certain period of time prior to importation. But I'm no tax specialist, so this might be all bullshit.

This HMRC notice covers things: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/notice-3-bringing-your-belongings-pets-and-private-motor-vehicles-to-uk-from-outside-the-eu/notice-3-bringing-your-belongings-pets-and-private-motor-vehicles-to-uk-from-outside-the-eu

ToR, section 5.

Time peiod you have been resident outside the EU = 12 months

Tme period for how long you have owned the vehicle = 6 months

Time period you must retain it after you import it = 12 months

Time limit for importing them after you arrive back = 12 months (but may be extended with good reason)

did not get them under a duty/tax free scheme (unless exepted e.g. armed forces)

Personal item for personal use, not commercial.

If you don't/can't meet all the conditions for relief, then go back to Old Kent Rd and import as per any old Tom, Dick or Harry (customs duty + VAT, etc.)

They are fairly specific but tend to be shared between various random models, e.g. Xantia hatchback uses the same kit as Saab 9000/GM900 and Vectra. If you use the Thule guide http://www.thule.com/en/gb/buyers-guideand Google the numbers it comes up with you should be able to work something out.

Where can you buy steel box section in small quantities?

The only stuff I've found is a meter length from b&q but they are out of stock locally (and not-so) locally.

I'm probably answering my own question here, but why are they called 3/5 window coupes, when they actually have 4 or 6; doesn't the windscreen count as a window?

If not, why? It is a bit of glass for looking out of, same as the back & side ones.

A few days ago I broke my lengthy (by my standards) tat-buying fast with the acquisition of a W-reg Fiat Scudo 1.9D.  At the time I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to do with it (it was local and cheap, which are generally justification enough on their own without any further specific need), but after yesterday's events it might be taking over daily duties from the Perodua for a while...

Anyway.

I had been expecting that it'd be powered by the old 1929cc Fiat diesel engine, which for some reason always seems to feel punchier than it should given its power figures.  Alas no - it's got a DW8 under the bonnet.  It's also glacially slow - 0-60 in 29.5 seconds, a second slower than my old non-turbo Iveco Daily.

This is my first DW8 so I don't really know a great deal about them - other than that they sound quite a lot like an XUD.  I was giving the levels a check this morning, and the oil (besides looking like black treacle) was on the minimum mark on the dipstick.  So I chucked in a litre and a bit of Tesco's finest 15w40 mineral diesel oil.  Since then, the oil light has occasionally flickered on at idle - usually when the idle goes a bit lower than usual, e.g. manoeuvring on the clutch or steering at full lock.  Probably not the end of the world, but it didn't do it before I filled the oil up.

So what's happenin'?  Is the fresh oil so much thinner than the treacle that it's caused the pressure to drop?  Or could me pouring new oil into an engine which doesn't appear to have had any for some time have dislodged some crud or something which is blocking things up?  I've heard of engine flushes doing that kind of thing, and even a full oil change on occasion, but I've never heard of simply topping up an existing sump of oil causing that problem. :?

Google steel suppliers for your response. Will be a lot cheaper than bandq and in stock. Usually three meter lengths.

Could it be the other way round and it's meant to have thin 5w40 or something?

Its a thing for an immobiliser that's probably been bypassed. Takes a thing that looks like a coin cell battery on a keyring.

Some trackers also use them, each individual driver of the vehicle will "log in" with their own key thing.
