robinmasters Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Why would brake shoes drag when you turn the wheel forward, but not when you spin it backwards? Misaligned shoes? Warped drum? MASSIVE STUPIDITY AND CACKHANDEDNESS?
cobblers Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 it's a bit misaligned and you are getting a leading edge self assist situation going on when you don't want it. They shouldn't be free enough to move like that without any braking pressure though so something's loose. How much do they drag? have you driven it yet? mashed the brake pedal?
Asimo Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 ^^^ Drum brakes: are you sure all of the return springs are on in the right places?

They shouldn't be free enough to move like that without any braking pressure though so something's loose. How much do they drag? have you driven it yet? mashed the brake pedal? As much as I want it to be the answer, mashing the brake pedal probably won't make a difference-I should have mentioned its a handbrake-only drum, inside a disc. So if it's possibly looseness, it could just be a case of winding the adjuster out a bit? They're new shoes, and the return springs are in the right place-stretching those bastards on isn't a job I ever want to do twice. I have drIven it, and it's just enough to squeak.
Richard Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 The shoes on handbrake drums tend not to be as firmly located as service brake shoes, you can move a Volvo back and forward a few inches with the handbrake on. I think it will eventually wear off the edge that's catching. robinmasters 1
willswitchengage Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 New stupid question:- does any manufacturer make a non turbo diesel these days? Yes the 2.0 (common rail) SDI was the last, running briefly in the post-2004 golfs. Poogeot stopped making their DW8 engine in about 2007ish as it didn't meet the latest emission standard. Other than that I think you're looking at a Kubota tractor or a narrowboat pompei 1

Asimo Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I am pretty oblivious to Post 1988 Vauxhalls (unless they come from Norfolk or Australia). So, what is a Signum? Queueing behind one today, is it a poshed up Astra or Vectra estate or a re badged wotsit from GM somewhere else like an Isuzu or Daewoo?

KruJoe Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Wiki is your friend: The Signum was largely based on the Opel Vectra and used the long-wheelbase version of the GM Epsilon platform, also used by Vectra Caravan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Signum Asimo 1
tooSavvy Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 My company wheelzz is a FIAT Doblo Multijet90 van. It has a quite competent quota of 'Torque/Whoosh'... sufficient to make 'A road' gap slotting quite a laugh.... this is a 1.3 dervT. has anyone got/driven a car with it in? What kind of urban weapon are they?? previously, I helmed a 6sp 1.6 dervT Doblo... a GENUINE 115MPH rocket..... . on the A74 {Fed sleeper heaven} it would be a licence shredder...... so I kept it kool. holbeck Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Can you bump start an auto under any circumstances? I only ask as I left the lights on my Suzuki all day and it was flat as a bastard when I came back. As it was parked out of sight in some old cattle pens at the top of a slope, I coasted it out so the RAC could find me. It was so tempting slam it into drive and see what happened.
kinkersaab Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I believe you could on some old mercs, never done it, nor heard of any other car that can, but am certain it was possible.....

hairymel Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 mrshed - afaik the chain can be unlocked by any of the padlocks - as a hypothetical scenario bt, tmobile and orange all have a key for a separate padlock and can all access the mast to service their equipment. if the shower of shit @ bt* stop using the mast their padlock can be removed and the others will not need to be issued new keys. *I may have a personal dislike of certain mobile providers! So crap that I couldn't be bothered to drive it anywhere so that was a waste of hundreds of Euros....
Inspector Morose Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 SWMBOs Panda has that engine. Seems a suitable power plant for the size of car. Relatively economical, not quick but neither is it truly glacial, all in all not bad over the six years we've had it. In a bigger car though. Maybe not.

red5 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 A motorcyclist comments : this is usually because it has a "twin leading shoe servo effect" outlined in that GCSE physics class you missed. shoes.jpg Kind of. the effect you are referring to is 'self servo effect' rather than TLS. Strictly speaking the drum shouldn't drag when rotating in either direction. It's usually a excessive build up of brake dust (especially with non perpendicular mounted shoes) or over-adjustment of brake shoes.
Asimo Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 What was the last car available with 7" round headlights? (Land Rover Defenders excepted), Mini?
garbaldy Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Not sure if its possible to buy one without camchain issues tbh according to the tinternet which of course we all take as gospel, the 1.3cdti engine has had its interval revised and is supposed to have its chain changed at 38000 miles if that is infact true then surely 20k services make that awkward
