Butchers use white as it's "cleaner" looking than the brown stuff.

You can set CCleaner to retain certain cookies/settings.

Be careful with all the settings on CCleaner; I wasn't, the first time I used it, and it caused utter havoc. Not quite as scream inducing as the Conficker attack I had once, but close.

I know this has been asked before, but i can't be arsed to wade through 216 pages....and Albert/Max's posts above has reminded me.

A mate has looked on Doovla website and an old car - XR2i - is still coming up as registered, taxed etc.

they'd love to see it again, and possibly buy it back, how could this be done?

Sounds like a cookies issue. Usually I find these sites remember my previous choices until I run CCleaner and then I have to go through the same palaver getting to the pictures file again afterwards.

I have this problem with things like the 'Add folder to library' option in iTunes, it defaults to the folder for Drama by Yes on my hard drive usually...

Hanging out on Ford forums and asking questions to see if anyone knows the whereabouts is the only method really.

You could try to convince the DVLA that you need the address details - they supposedly will supply where there is a "legitimate demand" (such as a car dumped on your property, or to pursue a private court claim against a driver) but I can't see them going for it TBH.

Cheers. It works on other websites but not Bumtree for some weird reason. I'll try cleaning my biscuits and see what happens, cheers.

Something's wrong, I enter my fuel purchases in litres.

Also the 20% error comes from the different size of a US and Imperial gallon.

Trivia fans will be happy to know that this difference comes from the yanks not having enough fluid ounces in their pints.

I'll consider myself lucky I don't have to buy hats by volume then.

Brake pipe spanner i.e this one

brake-and-fuel-pipe-flare-nut-spanner-10

Essential tool for the job or just as likely to cause the same knuckle grazing and bolt rounding woe my open ended 11 has this evening?

Posted

It's for the brake pipe nuts on the back of the wheel cylinders so no, not without cutting a bit out of the ring for going over the brake pipe! To be fair one can out ok though the other needed some butchery with the grips. Problem is that I don't have a flairing tool to redo the brake pipes and fit a new nut (which I also don't have).

I'm a right tight git and I've bought myself one.  It's not a miracle solution but it's worth arming yourself well against having to buy new brake pipes.

Anyone know how to get the cassette out of a Clarion autochanger.

C5 underseat model.

Pushed and poked at it a bit, the motor makes encouraging noises but fails miserably to eject.

Never had one before and don't want to kill it completely before I have had a chance to entertain the neighbours with 10 hours worth of psychosis inducing sounds.

Thanks for that, will have to give it a shot.

Was hoping a few profane incantations might do the trick :(

Cant find the original post, but we were talking about driving untaxed cars to pre-booked MOT and the 'how far away can that be' question turned up again.

So I asked the police website thing about buying a hypothetical car in Birmingham and driving it to a pre-booked MOT in my home town of Exeter, and here is what I assume is the definitive answer:

Bob

There is no set maximum distance in law as to how far away the MoT testing station should be but it would be for you to prove that you have booked a pre arranged appointment. With ANPR cameras and travelling such a long distance means that you are likely to get stopped by the police on at least one occasion and we would advise that you have some form of evidence with regards to the appointment.

We would advise that you consider booking an MoT in Birmingham for the same day you go to collect it, in the long run it may save you a lot of time and effort.

was there a thread on here to do with scrounging delivery of car parts off other members?

I want to bid on a 604 tyre/wheel but it's collection only and many miles from me

What is the big deal with 6 cylinder engines, I mean engineering or physics wise? Why is a 2.5l 6 cylinder better than a 4 cylinder equivalent?

Posted

A straight 6 has perfect mechanical balance meaning they're smoother than a 4.  They also have a smoother power delivery: on a 4, each powerstroke has finished before the next one begins, but on an even-fire 6 (as in, there is the same number of degrees of rotation between the power strokes of the cylinders - some V6 engines don't have this) the next powerstroke begins before the previous one has finished.

Am I right in thinking that the engine is less stressed too... I know everything still has to go up and down the same, or round and round the same, but if you have a 200bhp 6-cyl then each "boom" is less powerful than a 200bhp 4-cyl.

Posted

Also, more cylinders is usually better, rather than just larger capacity. Better to have more, smaller pistons thumping up and down rather than just a few huge pistons.

Not sure about less stressed, but believe me a Jaguar V12 feels very effortless compared to a less-cylindered engine with the same power output.

Since my last st00peed question was sucked through a wormhole in the space-time vortex, here we go again.

For my 1994 Pig-O 405, I have a remote key, the old infra-red single-button thingy. This works fine. The fob still contains a piece of paper with the code printed on it. Now I would like to have a second fob, but I get contradicting information from some of the internets.

- Some say, only Pig-O could program it for my car, but they don't offer that service anymore for a car this old, so sod all.

- Some say, all you have to do is get yourself a second fob, even a used one, switch on the ignition with another key and then just press the button of the 'new' key and witchcraft happens and it will synchronise its frequency with the receiver in the car.

- Some say, the above won't work, I'd need to get two fobs, plus the corresponding receiver from a scrapped car, in order to have two functioning fobs.

- Some say, they can program the key to match the existing code on the piece of paper in the fob (presumably this is also what Pig-O did way back when the air was clean and sex was dirty). However, still other some say that this service can only be done to the newer fobs with two buttons and a software based system, but not to the analog infra-red ones I still have.

Is any of the above true, and if yes, what?

Oh, and did I already say that everything made after 1986 is useless shit?

Posted

My experience of a slightly newer 306, still with Infra-red, was the one of getting hold of any old remote and doing the two-key trick to make it work. I think to get a definitive answer you might just need to plump up for the cost of the cheapest option and start there - your local breaker might have an IR key to try, the key bit will naturally be wrong but they might let you program the IR bit just to try before you buy.

How bendy is a fanbelt?  I had OMGwaterpumpF on one of the fleet last week; after a great deal of faffing about, I managed to locate a water pump on eBay.  It arrived on Thusrday and I set about fitting it.  Except that once I took the (offset) drive pulley off the old pump to put it on the new, it became apparent that the new pump's shaft is about an inch shorter.  The pump body and pipe fittings etc. are all spot on.  This means the pulley is way out of line for the original drive pulley, but is only about 5mm out from the pulley which drives the PAS pump.  The belt is a 17mm wide toothed V-belt.  What are my chances (as a temporary solution until I can find a correct pump for less than the £270 + VAT I've been quoted so far) of persuading it to bend 5mm each way over the course of about a 300mm run?

Junkman - to be honest, I think I'd just buy one of those Chinese remote central locking kits on Ebay. Fitted one to the BX TXD Turbo (now Minimad's). Much better to use as you can operate it from much further away from pretty much against the window, which is my memory of the Peugeot remote locking of that era. They retail at about £10.
