Working on the Toledo this afternoon and managed to finally use some of the trade sized roll of masking paper that I bought about a million years ago.

It was a magical moment.

Go on, wrap it up like a parcel and put a "Do not open until Christmas" label on it.

Be careful using elderly masking tape, the adhesive goes off. It still sticks ok, but it's a nightmare to remove!

Picked the Cowley up from its brake work today.   I got Mrs Rocker to stop at the One Stop on the way to pick it up so I could get the inevitable cash out of the cashpoint to pay for it.   We pulled back onto the dual carriageway and were followed up the hill by a gritter.   Fuck.   He is going to go up the whole d-c, into the town centre and back down the other way - right where I am about to drive the Cowley....

Tried to plot another way back home once I picked it up but it would involve joining the other dual carriageway where he had just come from when we first saw him.

No option but to grit my teeth (as well as the underside of the car) and drive back through his evil handiwork to get home.

But wait!

Fucker had broken down on the roundabout before the homeward stretch of dual carriageway!

Not today, Gritty McGritArse!

Did my lawn mower really need an oil pressure gauge and warning light?

Yes. Yes, it did.

Any company or thing that uses Alexei Sayle’s face for some sort of promotion is the best kind of company or thing. Can I have dibs on that cardboard cut out if nobody wants it, please?

The thing is he's from Bootle, brought up by paid up members of the communist party, studied art at Southport Tech and didn't learn to drive until he was over 40, Because it was too scary.

I've always bin a fan.

A big shout out to KFC in the Metrocentre on Saturday. Met My mother there who'd had the kids over night. The little one (6) left her rucksack there complete with her 10" tablet. They've been through the bag, somehow got my number from it (dad) and gave me a ring yesterday to collect it. How would a tablet with no sim card have my number on it? Anyway a big thanks to the people who handed it in as well. We didn't even know it was missing. We thought she'd left it at my mams.

Great excuse to frequent there place more often in the future :-D

Who needs heated and quick clear windows! In the time it takes to smoke a rolly the 406 clears its own ice!

Your google account probably contains your number somewhere if the tablet wasn't locked.

Didn't the opening credits of his sketch show have bonus shite content? His 'handsome alter ego' drives an XJS if I remember correctly.

Bike all finished and done. Actually enjoyed cycling it from work last night and to work this morning. Definitely badly needed the overhaul. Amazing the difference a mechanical thing can feel between worn out and newly refreshed. Brakes are sharp, gear changes are crisp, no chain rattles, pedalling is smooth and friction free. Most of all, now I can stop hard, it feels like I may only break my legs when someone cuts in front of me rather than dieing or become a paraplegic.

Makes it easy to find it in the bike rack at work!

I think I'll give cycling over winter a go. Ignoring the fact that the bike rebuild cost the same amount as a month's fuel+wear+parking costs going by car, it also more importantly means I carry on eating all the cake that appears at work without ballooning in weight over winter. This alone makes it bareable when it's dark and 2c outside.

Cake maths at its finest there!

Cake maths at its finest there!

Indeed! To be fair, even though that's an important factor, commuting by bike has many other benefits.

Exercise: If I didn't cycle, I'd do zero exercise. Cycling to work is nice but cycling back is a bit grim - however you have less choice to cycle home vs to work. I didn't renew my car park permit too as if I have the option of driving in I would...

Time: Cycling to work takes 15 minutes, cycling home takes 18 minutes (it's up hill going back). Admittedly I now cycle a bit quickly, but my neighbour who doesn't go quick still only takes her 25 minutes or so. If I did the same journey by car it can be anything from 20 to 50 minutes - dependant on time leaving, weather conditions (rain makes less people cycle in) and if any accidents have happened. Bus on a good day is 30 minutes but usually nearer 40 minutes - also a ten minute walk to the bus stop.

So basically I save a crap load of time by cycling.

Enjoyment: Sitting in a stuffy, crowded and smelly bus is not fun. Neither is sitting in a car being cut-up by others and stuck in traffic jams. Yes cycling in the rain is not pleasant, but skin is waterproof. More intense pain so to speak but you spend less time enduring that pain. If wearing full waterproofs, it can be quite rewarding that you're making progress through it though.

Cost: Massive one here.

Cycling over the last 4 years has cost me the a rebuild of the bike (£300), a couple of inner tubes (~£20 for the ones I've used), a set of pads (£10) and 2 chains (£30). So £7.50 a month.

Bus isn't too bad, either £4 for a day ticket or £66 for a months ticket. That gives unlimited travel around the area by bus. Which is ok unless you want to get there at a decent time.

To drive into Bristol would require parking at £15 per day or £120 for a month season ticket. As traffic is slow, you tend to burn a lot of fuel - getting 35mpg from a diesel is good going. Petrols, even if small and economical tend to be sub 30mpg. I'm on flexitime so can miss most of the traffic, but the traffic lights still eat into fuel. 280 miles a month for me to drive in everyday. So £55ish in fuel if doing 30mpg and £66ish in fuel if doing 25mpg.

Basically £180-200 a month realistically to run a car for fuel+parking+wear.

TL;DR there are many reasons why cycling in work, works well for me. Apart from the exercise the biggest thing is that a fair chunk of money is saved that I save every month by cycling in. To put it another way, that £200 per month saved is enough to buy a Makita Impact Wrench every single month. This man maths allows me to spend money on my old cars without too much guilt!

But don't let this on to many others! The track I ride on is busy enough as it is and I rather it not get busier...!

No it's not, that's why you turn into a prune in the bath.

Agree with the rest though, if it wasn't for miles of unlit road with car users who struggle to avoid obvious cars coming the other way I'd cycle more too.

Hopefully you don't mind properly breathing in all the fumes whilst cutting through the traffic.

You'd be breathing the same fumes for longer sat in the traffic.

I'm not sure what's worse.

Regular diesel exhaust or catalyzed diesel exhaust.

Put a cheeky bid on a nice (in my eyes) looking old clock on eBay a few days ago. Nice big slab of brass, sort of Art Deco inspired. Just got the notification I've won it for the starting bid.

Assuming it actually appears and doesn't "get lost" somewhere between the seller and post office, I'll call that a bargain.

With a TWR bodykit! I seem to recall you couldn't open the boot with the radio on (the electric aerial goes through a hole in the spoiler). I always enjoyed watching him run down Leslie Crowther on his moped.
