On my way into work this morning I spotted five pedal and pop step through mopeds on the foot bridge across the bypass.They all had yellow reflective tabards  on and the lead 'ped had some sort of weather-proof map attached to the headlight.(he was just riding down off the bridge onto the footpath as I drove by).

I stopped at the shop in the next village and watched them all ride by.They had an outline of GB on the back of each tabard and the newest moped was a 1974 N.reg Honda PC50. They were obviously on some sort of charity ride and either had a very old map (bypass opened early 90's) or decided using the bridge would save a mile of their journey.If they got caught I would think they would switch the engines off and pedal like a bicycle.

Made me smile seeing a bunch of 40+ year old mopeds at rush hour on these quiet B roads.Makes a change from the pelatons we usually see.

Managed to drive today for the first time in almost seven months. Only 6 miles and knee is now sore as hell but it’s a start. Had a nice cup of tea* at the golf club while Mrs BN had a walk, then she drove me home.

 

Thinking of buying an MGF / TF despite OMGHGF as I’m obviously OK* now.

Went on my work's do last night and got absolutely wankered, it was a great night out.

Always wondered how people found good stuff at the tip and today I struck gold*

 

On the top of the electrical waste stack was a perfect pair of Eltax Mini speakers, not something I would use for a good hi-fi, but a massive step-up on the budget ply and cardboard shit that was in the kitchen.

Even a piece of junk sound box is improved by some proper weighty speakers.

If that 107" was based at Bearwood Garage, chances are I've been in that when I was nipper, my Grandad was quite a senior manager at Midland Red and my Dad a Motorways Express driver, we often seemed to have the Land Rover or a Thruppenny Bit to take stuff to the tip or whatever. As a 5 year old I was fascinated by all the gear levers.

 

That's just reminded me. I was driving along the Fosse Way on Saturday after the Dacia show (having left my washbag at the AirBNB) and a Midland Red coach turned out of a junction and narrowly missed a flying Dacia. Then a half-cab coach came racing along behind it! Both in wedding garb, both emerging from different directions. There may have been 'wow' noises.

A strange grin this evening,  I was fetching the washing in and a young magpie landed on the line right in front of me.  He looked straight at me and opened his mouth so I assumed he wanted food.  I hunted around under a few rocks with him sat on my head and found a worm for him which he took out of my hand and sat on my shoulder to eat.  My 8 year old daughter came out at this point and was very pleased that he wanted to say hello so fetched some cheese from the house for him.  He ate some of that from my hand then flew up into the tree while we went in.  I'm always meaning to feed the birds but rarely get around to it.  Time to put that feeding shelf outside my bedroom window that I've been meaning to do for over a year then.

Cats - maybe put a dish of water out too? in this heat I've seen crows near my house drinking water from the bowls people leave out for dogs to drink from.

I've just done the same, as been meaning to do it for ages. The mice I see scurrying about might also benefit. I think one of them has been nibbling at my tomatoes, but we've had a bumper crop in this heatwave so I can spare a few.

Antidote to grumpiness? Having a sense of humour. A wise man sad to me if you lose you sense of humour you are done for. Being able to laugh about something means you are well on the way to dealing with it. I try to find a way to laugh at something no matter how terrible, this offends some but it's not meant to. Read an anecdote along time ago and can't vouch for it's truth, but it was about concentration camp inmates joking that at least they got a free haircut and a new set of clothes. I was in awe of the guts that would have taken. I suppose with a sense of humour you are never completely beaten and done for. I try my best not to take life seriously, it makes things a lot more fun.

 

Besides, a sense of humour is pretty easy to get hold of and it doesn’t cost much!

One of the fox cubs, now grown, is still coming back for the chicken etc... I leave for them. Unfortunately the dog is long gone due to a blood disorder - but as he used to sit and watch them eat from his bowl it's still in place. 

The other 2 cubs and mum are still around an barking to each other - but one of 'em just trots on up to the back door and tucks in..... 

 

- noted on the water thing too - I left it out for the fox - must go and leave extra out for the birds etc.. in the area. Thanks for the heads up, can't believe I didn't think of it!

I read an account of an inmate of Dachau, he mentioned in there silly practical jokes they did to each other. I think it tailed off after a while as I guess they got to a point of putting every effort into surviving. They were very immature and the sort of stuff we used to do on school trips. Just shows that the human spirit can endure in even the worst of times.

The residents association lobbied the council to put parking restrictions outside our flats. If you want to park outside it now costs £60.00 a year. Thanks toss bags!

Although this should be in the grump section. The local clowncil around here have decided they want £800 per year to lease a space in the old doctors surgery carpark. That's over £60 per month.
