Eek!  Sorry about that - I was under the back about three months back and never noticed the spring or the arm…

It looked fine to me too!  Obviously not in it's first flush of youth, but I was surprised when he was able to poke a hole in it.  These arms are common to X-Trail, Koleos and quite recent Qashqais, and they're full of horrible rust traps.

They were both definitely original, so a decent innings - but good on you for sticking with it.  Just had a look at the MOT points, I thought my tester was strict…but it reminded me I forgot to tell you about the jubilee clip deputising for the rusted backbox bracket!

I refuse to believe that the matching car/backpack combo is a coincidence @LightBulbFun!

It was. I was looking for somewhere that had free parking and was interesting. Not easy to find that combination in Londonshire. At one I point was considering Asda Isle of Dogs!! As I said to @LightBulbFun down by the Thames is always my preference when visiting London - I think I like the open.

Nah, the bloke initiated it all. He is an American engineer (he appreciated the practical engineering simplicity). Being a Yank he'd obviously never seen or heard of one.

He said he was setting up a Tungsten mine! Presumably in the US and not Rotherhithe...

Whilst all the this was going on I was taking film shots of Dez's pride and joy.

Was a pleasure @LightBulbFun to meet you and your mainly light blue 3 wheeler. I hope you enjoyed the pub and the views of the river.

I appreciate you coming out of your way to meet me. I can see why this vehicle works so well for you and especially in London being automatic and all those horrible 20mph zones.

That was the first time I've driven inside the M25 and I can't say it's something I want to do v often at all! The Rotherhithe tunnel made me smile in a this is mad kinda way. The lanes are only just wide enough for 2 normal cars. 2 SUVs passing and it's tight!

I shot a few colour film pics of the Invacar on a point and shoot and 11 of 12 shots on a 120 film in the Mamiya C3 (I wasted* a shot on the Thames) and I'm going to send LBF the prints and scans of the negs so if he wants he can have prints made at his preferred size or post them wherever he chooses.

After an enjoyable meet up we left the pub with lbf following but we got separated by a single car before we went back through the tunnel. It was v impressive catching the occasional glimpse of his Invacar in my mirrors going through the tunnel.

At Limehouse Lbf then peeled off north to go home and I went east via Poplar, the North Circular and the M11. I came in that way 9.30-10am so it was relatively civilised - 2pm it was as I'd always imagined London driving. Idiots pulling in out and out randomly, low level chaos etc. I'm v pleased I'm not on those roads at 9am tomorrow. Where the M11 crosses the M25 I breathed a sigh of relief of being off "them bloody London roads".

Strangely enough I didn't see many other old or interesting cars in the big smoke. Apart from the above Invalid Carriage probably the oldest was the one I was in - a 57 plate diesel Doblo.

Right I best go and pay the sodding ULEZ and check if the congestion charge applies on a Sunday.

Thanks again @LightBulbFun

(I'll post in the Amateur Photography thread why I chose to drive down to Peckham in the 1st place).

Not sure which bits you went in, but unless you went a fair bit west of rotherhithe you shouldn't have gone in the congestion charge zone (it starts around tower bridge area )

worth double checking the map before paying any money

Thanks, I have double checked and you are right, I didn't go in the congestion zone. Me being all country bumkin and fretting!

ULEZ successfully paid.

As mentioned by @Fat_Pirate, I know own his former 607.

This isn't my first time at this particular rodeo as I had a BCA 607 last year, which incredibly is still going.

I've been using it for commuting for the last week, and it's been great. The gearbox, whilst mainly smooth, is a little dimwitted at times. But can I blame it? No. It is a really well worn comfy old thing, which handles so well for a big old French boat. It has issues, I think the OS front caliper is dragging, but my old 607 had hideous wheel shake when braking so this is preferable. It doesn't have the button press bootlid close though, which was cool. But it does have a (non functional) car phone!

It won't be the permanent commuter. I can't use this beast for that long term, but I'm actually coming round to the idea of having it as my second toy. Why not?

No idea what I fancy instead though..torn between a Panda and something just a bit calmer.

Have just been reminded that MG 'rubber' bumpers are Bayflex. Who else knew?

I've been taking advantage of the dry and unusually mild weather this weekend to crack on with winterproofing the cars - gave the Rover, Volvo, Innocenti and Toyota a jet wash underneath and then a liberal application of cavity wax into the available box sections.  I also whipped the back wheels off the Innocenti and greased up the handbrake cables.

I wasn't able to do the final bit of the process as the Waxoyl I ordered to spray onto the vulnerable bits of underside hasn't turned up yet, but I treated the underside of the Volvo with a can of Auto Extreme rustproofing wax - probably not as good as Waxoyl but the car won't be going anywhere over the winter so should be good enough.

I didn't get much else done today as I spent most of the morning watching the Remembrance Sunday service / parade on the telly.  (Was surprised to see so many WW2 veterans still able to attend.)  I did get the mopeds shoehorned into the garage for the winter though.

Nature apparently realised it was Remembrance Sunday too - walking up the road to the car park to start cavity waxing the cars I came across this solitary poppy growing up from under a kerbstone at the side of the road.

That bulkhead strengthening looks very neatly tucked in.

Is it one you made or bought?

If bought, which one?

there wasn’t any flex in the tub sides

Result!

there is a central tube part which we discovered was about 2 inches too wide

(tbf, that would be a lot of flex, which seems pretty unlikely)

You’re implying that Land Rover’s tolerances are finer than 25.4mm…

Also

we had to do a lot of fine tuning to make that back door fit

Don't know how recent this news is, but I've just read that the cannonball record has been broken seven times in five weeks!

Article didn't say by who, or how fast tho, so I'm not sure if it's true

The Mazda 323 I've had for two and a half years had a not quite FTP about a month ago. The clutch slave cylinder decided it had done enough work. Had to drive the last 25 miles rev matching which I have experience of with clutch cables breaking on previous cars. Then today it had an actual FTP when it refused to start. Pretty sure it's the coil so ordered one which should arrive on Friday. For a car that's 32 years old I don't think that's too bad in the time I've had it. Have a pic. I've yet to see another estate.
