I made an interesting discovery today. 

I've always wanted to know what my Grandad's first company car was knowing that he had a Ford Consul L in the mid 70's. Well I got chatting with my dad this morning and he told me that before my Grandad had the Consul (which was the second company car he owned), the first company car he had was a Silver 4-door Datsun saloon in around 1973/74. At first I thought it could be a Laurel C130 as my dad describes it as one of the top end spec models, but after looking through some photos on the internet, he said it was a 260C saloon. My dad recalls the grill with the two square chrome pieces in the centre, and that it was silver with a black vinyl interior, so something similar to this:

That's my news for today, I might ask my uncle if he's got any photos of it.

This was up for sale at my local auction, I used to see it from time to time in town and even spoke to the elderly owner a couple of times. 

It's tidy,  but short MOT so I lobbed a £500 commission bid on and thought I was in with a shout. 

The hammer has just gone down at £2K!

That's £2326.80 with auction fees. 

Insane.

Off to ECP to return my old starter for the surcharge. It's not exactly the same part as the new one but it's equivalent, hopefully that doesn't matter because it wasn't a small surcharge!

Catalytic converter is a good £5-600. Before you even consider it's a lovely Honda that's been well cared for with 3 doors etc.

However, it's about twice what I thought it might be.  Someone really wanted it though.

Code reader plugged into the Fiesta of doom, comes back as P0030 which is the precat lambda sensor, I tried to clear it but it failed. I've ordered a new sensor, hopefully it's as simple as that.

Next job is to fix* the crusty wings then it's ready for an MOT and selling.

The sun's starting to come out, So I though I'd go and give the Golf a look over (I still have it) at the parents and to check a few things. Thankfully all I can see it should need for test is a patch of duct tape over a small bit of rust, and to secure part of the NS door trim back on. On top of that I'm going to finally get it serviced, as well as do the fuel filter to see if that'll cure the mysterious cutting out issue. 

Then hopefully have a few summer fun days with it, roof down and maybe have a white van driver shout "poof" at me while driving it. It'll be 2019 all over.

Because my 1979 T2 wasn't registered until June '80 it requires a rear fog light. After 25 years of frankly shit, derivative efforts I have installed a much prettier alternative.

Technically it's illegal since it doesn't have the correct 'EU approved' or whatever words moulded into the lens, but do I care? I don't even take it for a test anymore.

I've been looking at Minis for a good few weeks now. Thanks to @Mr Laurence putting up with my rambling musings. 🤣

I was hoping for something ready to go that wouldn't need any work for the near future. However it seems no matter how much you spend they're all in varying states of decay or bodge up. Even the expensive ones look to have lashings of filler. I very nearly went to see a Clubman Estate yesterday and booked a day off to see it as it was a 6hr roundtrip away. But the seller sent me some pictures of the car and basically it was masses of filler in the awkward to weld bits. 

For the same money you can get much better condition Moggie. Mrs SiC and I like both the Mini and Moggie too, so it wouldn't feel too off-putting if I did get one instead. They also meet the criteria of plentiful local parts support (literally local being Charles Ware is in Bristol too). Something that I sorely miss on other cars I've had. I guess the thicker metal helps here and also by the 80s they were pretty much classics, unlike the Mini which still was a utilitarian car for many.

When I get a Mini, I think I'll just wait till the season quietens down at the end of a year. Also it's going to be a project either way, so buy one that already is at a good price and then weld it up myself. At least I'm not paying for someone else's filler lashings and quick blow over.

Going back to light part support, that includes my Dolomite. With a free day off I decided to go up and see the club parts man to relieve me of over 500quid of various bent pieces of metal. 😳

Hopefully this should be all that I need now in terms of panels to complete it. Just need to put in time now and get it all done.

Taken a chunk out of my budget for a Moggie but there isn't a huge amount out there of them at the moment anyway.

Mini's, well unless it's had a new shell that's been double dipped and properly protected it will have rust hiding somewhere, I used to seal front and rear screens on the late classic Mini's when they were under warranty because the dry seal rubber just wasn't, if the factory thought that was acceptable then finding a non rusty one might take some time, I love Mini's and have owned quite a few but probably won't get another now

I thought I may have spotted @worldofceri this morning approx 10am give or take on the M6(N) in the roadworks around Stafford.  I was heading south on my way to Alconbury.

My suspicions were confirmed approx 7pm this evening when I was heading north back home around Sandbach services when @worldofceriwas spotted heading south with what looked like an Ice Cream booth on the back of his trailer!

I am guessing a nightmare was had around the Jct19/20 south closure?
