My 190e has been relegated to the driveway to make room for Emma.

 

Previous owner of our house left this. I think it's meant for seedlings, but it's now collecting 15w40 from the bottom of the engine.

 

Standard issue structural support for the discerning hatchback owner...

 

Emma from behi... Oh forget it.

 

And I just screamed at the top of my voice. Yes!!

 

Turns out the previous owner had this installed. Naughty naughty...

 

But what did I find in the boot?!

What's plans? Are you going to keep it as is or restore it?

Keep as is. We'll make sure it's mechanically good but leave the cosmetics alone. That rusty rear wing will want attention at some point, but the dents can all stay.

 

We were talking about replacing the tatty dash and door cards, but actually I don't think they're that bad and should probably stay. Personally I'd even leave the empty fag packet that's in the empty radio cage; mind you, it's mostly not going to be me that drives around in it.

 

The philosophy Bornite and I were discussing was to maintain it pretty much as the previous two owners had, at least with the non-essentials. Other people have a say too though...

After all those years 'slumming it' in London and now it's entering retirement with new owners and it gets to live in a garage.

If you clean that drip tray before use you'll be able to pour the oil it catches straight back in the top of the engine!

Can't really add more than what has already been said, seriously well done for purchasing it. Feels mighty odd seeing a car that was such a landmark of that area in pastures new! I'd love to see it for real one day, I never actually got round to seeing it in all of my London visits.

 

If only the other London Base Sierra was still with us, but it got scrapped nearly three years ago now. It wasn't a grey grille though….

I'm glad this collection was happening after I had to cancel my weekend plans due to my red car being troublesome.  I imagine that was the Shite Gods at work to ensure safe and reliable progression with Cardinal Emma and is a sacrifice I'm not exactly willing to make, but will just have to lump it.

 

Looking forward to further updates and the full tour of this completely boring and unremarkable vehicle.  It's so mundane it's truly special.

I've just come home to find a suitably fucking ace thread about this car. Well done to all involved but as already said before, an amazingly large hug to your mate Emma. There is something rather heartwarming about a girly mate who calls you a knob in a positive and friendly way. 

 

I would also be very happy to donate a few quid to the car fund but would also be happy to donate to an Emma fund for a slap up meal and a couple of bottles of prosecco. Virtual hat doffed to all concerned but a special hug to Emma. Oh, if you wash or repair the bodywork of this car it will result in a sudden and acute pain in the nuts

And the best was saved till last. One of the key features of this car, it's radio blanking plate, has been KEPT IN THE BOOT. The survival of that piece of plastic is almost as remarkable as the car itself! Looking at the radio, that plate must have been in there for decades.

What a fantasic collection and writeup!! Looks bloody amazing. Feeling so much love for this little fighter. So many things could have resigned this to the scrapheap - not just mechanical or bodywork troubles, life events such as the 1987 storm, 1990 Poll Tax riots and the 2011 riots could have seen this survivor taken from us in a heartbeat.

 

I always think that cars have feelings, and I'd say that the Sierra is feeling quite happy right now because it's future will now be 100% secured, if something did go wrong with it then I'd think there would be a lot of people on here who would rally round and help out to get it correct again.

 

So glad you found the blanking plate so it can be returned to factory spec again! If there are any bits required then I shall be more than happy to help source them out.

While the idea that private individuals bought these base models is an interesting one, it was however quite unusual. Almost all were bought by companies, At this time if you drove a company car you had a choice of models up to your "pay grade" I remember when I worked for Walls and they had a company car day where all the cars were available to look at and drive I had the choice of Escort or Orion 1.3GL or 1.6L and the Sierra 1.3L or 1.6 base. At the time as a new rep I had inherited a Sierra base in Brown with a towbar but really wanted and ordered a red Orion 1.3GL as it was seen as a much posher car with its *extras.

There were only two reps who ordered the base Sierra and they both also ordered the Towbar option as they had caravans and needed the extra weight and RWD of the Sierra along with the grunt of the 1.6. FWD cars being seen as unsuitable for towing at the time.

BL products were there and were well specced compared to the Fords but no one ordered one due to the very real fear of ridicule at the monthly meetings. Having said that the boss drove a Montego VDP but everyone knew he was a twat anyway.

Just to say that after a shite week of work and a bolocks of a day today, this thread, a few blokes on a strange car forum, a top girl and a 'specialist interest' car have put a big grin right on my face!

 

Would love to see 'Emma' rock up at a show, park as near as possible to one of the XR/RS/Cosworth type groups, and have one of the base collective crack out a bottle of AutoGlym trim gel, and do half the grille. Then bugger off. Dunno why, just amuses me, that...
