captain_70s Posted May 19, 2018 Author Posted May 19, 2018 My logic behind the repairs is as thus: I need to learn to weld because I have always have shite that needs welding.I have shite which I like that needs welding ASAP.I have access to a place where I can do welding. The shite that needs welding ASAP has no financial worth and I've already spent £1200 on it. May as well do the welding then. The bonus being that doing lots of under body work on the Acclaim means that more visible repairs to the Doloshite done at a later date will hopefully be less hideous. As FOAD mentioned I managed to leave my large sheet of 1.2mm offcut in the back seat of the Rover and didn't realise until I got to Edinburgh. The Lada floorpan now means that the Acclaim is now a true multicultural car as it features a Japanese made engine, a British made body and Russian repair materials... junkyarddog Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 So glad you got on with this welding. Not only to prove the naysayers wrong but to gain very valuable skills that will stay with you. Well done Captain. brickwall 1

Sigmund Fraud Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Great stuff, makes me want to drive down to the workshop and do some welding myself !
sierraman Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 The reg is NJ57UUH, a 2.0 'Namura' model. No rusty arches, no V5, 87426 non warranted mileage. The MOT history shows that the mileage is almost certainly correct and that it has the usual underbody surface rust but nothing tragic. They only book at £740 clean, £520 trade and £290 tatty. This one had no docs so £450 was about right. If you can get a year out of a car like this and weigh it in for £200 - and spend nothing on it - you've had cheap motoring. That's how you do it.Welcome to my life The Reverend Bluejeans 1
Pillock Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Fantastic result. The AS award for bravery goes to Captain70s and FOAD will be recognised in the new years Honours list for services to shite. Angrydicky and Aston Martin 2

They_all_do_that_sir Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 You know what? I'm glad I was wrong on this one. Fair play to you and Foad! I'd still do what the civic needs, at the very least it'll be an easy sell then Sent from my F3211 using Tapatalk The Reverend Bluejeans 1

GrumpiusMaximus Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I was wrong. I’m sorry. I take it all back. Hail to you.
vaughant Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Glad you fixed the acclaim, I've always fancied those, particularly a loaded CD model. If you've got the time and commitment then why not? I would have said personally keep dolly as no MOT required and maybe sack off the other two and get a better daily but in reality mechanically you've not had any major trouble with the acclaim, you enjoy driving it and it should now be pretty good for a while to come. I was told not to bother repairing the engine on my Zafira as you can pick them up anywhere for £0.50p but in reality, you can't and even if you do they're worse than the one you've already got!!! I liked the look of mine with a few irmscher bits on it, had zero rust and drove absolutely lovely. Did the engine swap 14 months ago now and it's just driven me home another 120 miles trouble free and in great comfort plus being a 2.2 a decent turn off pace. Well worth persevering. Well done times one billion. mk2_craig 1
trigger Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I think we are all happy to be proven wrong here! Still rather you than me though!
Felly Magic Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Well done to Captain70s and FOAD for a herculean effort, well played sirs.
Dick Cheeseburger Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Well, I wasn't expecting that. Result!Hopefully MOT will be fairly straightforward and you'll be able to chill out a bit after the car is sound for another 12 months.
Datsuncog Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 ^^^ There's been too many shiters' cars going to the great weighbridge in the sky of late... I'm equally grin-tastic that this one's bucked the trend. Stubbornness and persistence go a long way. catsinthewelder, coalnotdole and Angrydicky 3

AnthonyG Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 Excellent stuff. Is this one coming to Shitefest, or the Rover?
captain_70s Posted May 20, 2018 Author Posted May 20, 2018 If I can still attend (money/work woes) I intend to do so in the Acclaim or Doloshite. Aston Martin, oldcars, They_all_do_that_sir and 1 other 4
captain_70s Posted May 20, 2018 Author Posted May 20, 2018 Just out of work, need to go down to the post office and send off my V5C as neither of my Doloshites are registered as historic vehicles due to being off the road while they turned old enough! SiC and Datsuncog 2
greengartside Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 Wow! Outstanding effort. Glad it lives to fight another day.

plasticvandan Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 I've heard rumors that it can be done online when taxing...
