bobdisk Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 So nobody found what was making that knocking noise? Sorry I could not come, blame the old gas cooker. Got a new one coming Thursday. You should see the #### behind it. Got to clean it out first
Puglet Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 Thanks to Chris and Claire for another enjoyable weekend in the field of dreams. Just thought I'd post a few of my photos up taken when the sky went very moody. PS had good fun taking the SAAB engine apart. Mat and I were pondering what that rattling noise could be on the way up and wondered if its maybe something to do with the valves perhaps not seating correctly in the head. There seemed to be an imprint of a valve in the top of the soot on one of the pistons. Or maybe valve clearances aren't right, might be worth looking into...... Asimo Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 As for the rattle, a possibility is the balance shaft bearings and/or the timing gears. The fibre gears chew up pretty quickly once they reach the end of their life.
Zelandeth Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 Seeing those photos makes me even more sad that me and my cameras couldn't make it! Just thinking about the rattle - one of the basics worth double checking would be the oil filter. Are we absolutely sure the one fitted is correct? I've come across a situation where a factor has fouled up cross referencing the part I needed and gave me a filter which fitted but had the non return valve fitted opposing the normal flow direction. Worth double checking what's on there matches up properly. Difficult to say much more not having heard it.

Still worth double checking the part number, though?
mat_the_cat Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 Oil is definitely circulating fine - now. We cracked it over on a drill and observed oil flow to the top end after a while, although it looked dry when we first took the rocker covers off. Balance shaft bearings felt fine. I am going to take the pistons out of the block just in case we can see anything. There is also the matter that the engine smoked quite badly the short while we ran it and there is a lot of carbon build up on the piston tops Anybody fancy a one day special FoD to help me? Weekday or weekend.

Mrs6C Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 Van de Pomme was actually loaded like this... ... with lots of goodies from a farm in Lincolnshire, that used to have a mile long narrow gauge railway to haul potatoes. 14 x wooden railway sleepers (two foot gauge) 10 x wooden railway sleepers (18" gauge) 1 x concrete railway sleeper (two foot gauge) from 1914 10 x vintage potato chitting trays 1 x bundle of vintage tools (pitchfork, draw hoe, trenching shovel) 2 x new garden forks 2 x new spade handles 1 x roll of carpet 1 x can of wood preserver All the items were weighed before loading and the total was well within a C15's payload. All items were strapped and secured in case of emergency stops. Van de Pomme drove very nicely on the way back and turned 214k miles just before I got home. As always, I am very pleased with its capacity, capability and frugality. LightBulbFun, Crackers, Rust Collector and 4 others 7

We really should do a back to back comparison of the Caddy and C15 one day as they're so similar yet different vehicles. Think it would be quite interesting. There was absolutely no knocking from the engine when being spun over on the drill, there's nothing visibly wrong with anything that can be found, and theres no evidence of contact anywhere. But if one of the exhaust valve clearances had closed up to the point that the valve wasn't closing, there would be a horrible knocking sound every time that cylinder fires. Knocking when running, but not knocking at any other time. Hmmmmmmm. Puglet and chaseracer 2

I didn't think to check the clearances before we removed the heads; it was only something which came up chatting over it on the way home. It may be worth pouring some paraffin, diesel, or similar into the ports to see how much leaks past the valves - this will obviously not show a valve which was being held open by the valvegear, but if a valve cannot close fully for whatever reason, there'd be effectively a massive valve gap on that rocker, hence clatter (and it does seem more like top end to my ears, albeit only based on the video and not in real life). Zelandeth Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 Most of my photos from the day are on film so will be a little while before we see them. There were a heck of a lot of Metros there today! This one of course being my favourite for obvious reasons... Always a good event though. A lot of single marque shows can be a bit samey I find, but given how diverse BL's portfolio was this is always interesting. I'd honestly forgotten this even existed in convertible form. An SD1 is always worth a photo too, and always looks great. This one is definitely quite a rarity though. Can't be many of those left. Dyslexic Viking, Crackers, wuvvum and 8 others 11
quicksilver Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 What an excellent day at a show that seems to get bigger and better every year. I photographed pretty much everything so I'll just share a few highlights. Mmm, purple Wolseley wedge Police pursuit* vehicle Camp in style* with a beige Maestro Allegro Equipe with Serck plates. Oooof! MGA was the oldest and most exotic car there. Turbo diesel SD1 in hot* pursuit. Oldest Marina in the world, registered two days after launch. Note right-way-round wipers. Another Marina with right-way-round wipers. Weird one this as it was LHD and converted to RHD quite recently. Have the words "beautiful brown Montego" ever been used in the same sentence before? That's how this prizewinner was described. Postman Pat, Postman Pat and his Maestro van Intrepid traveller came from the Netherlands. In a Metro. Beige Ital, cor indeed! Never seen a Vermilion ADO16 before but the colour suits it This has allegedly done over a million miles on the original engine Only known surviving Metro in this weird colour called 'Sombrero' Definitely not BL, this enormous barge was lurking in the car park, on the grass as it's far too big to fit in a space Also got to meet Sarah Crabtree from Bangers and Cash, who was doing the prizegiving. She seems a lovely lass and reet northern. bobdisk, BeEP, Shite Ron and 12 others 15
